Output

You have to montior his urine output. The problem lies with it being excessive vommitting and runs. If the output is low that is not a good thing. If I was you, I would tae him to the ER

No, your pediatrician's office has someone available on Sunday. Call his doctor.

jacob has the runs and a low grade fever... what can I give him??

Please good advice is helpful

NSW

first of all...it is safe to give him some Tempra...NOT aspirin...just the acetaminophen kind of drug to relieve the fever...and definitely either call his doctor or the walk-in clinic. If you can't get ahold of the dr. then take him to Emergency if the diarrhea doesn't stop.

But, NSW...remember NO aspirin (it causes Reyes' Syndrome) and he is too little to have any kind of Imodium or Pepto-Bismol.

Did I miss a different post that said Jacob was vomiting and had diarreah?

If it's just a fever, and it's below 100, call your doctor's office (they should have an on-call doctor to call you back) and ask how much infant tylenol to give. It's been a while since I had an infant, so I can't remember the dosage.

Edited to say that I didn't see at first where you said he has the runs.

Definitely call your doctor. If your doctor's office doesn't have 24/7 on-call help, find another one that does and in the mean time, take Jabob to the ER.

I hate taking infants to the ER, because generally there are a lot of very sick people there. You can ask to be put in a room right away so he's not exposed to unnecessary germs.

Good luck. I'm sure he'll be fine.

Is he bottle or breast fed? That could make the difference. If breast fed, it could be something you ate.

Do not go to the ER. It is a waste of time and money. Call your pediatrician. If Jacob needs to go to the ER he will tell you.

Have this information available:
How many stools, how fast.
Is he drinking?
What is his temperature?
How much does he weigh?
Are his eyes sunken?
How is his skin turgor?
When was the last time he wet his diaper?

Pedialyte

I suggest you get some pedialyte and feed it to the baby so he don't get dehydrated if you decide not to go to the ER. Thats how we treat it in the ER

he has the runs but he is eating and is not vomiting at all but he does have a low grade temp

But it seems to be going down..

And, if you don't have one, buy yourself a book!

I really liked "What to Expect..." There is "What to Expect in the First Year" and What to Expect in the Toddler Years." Anyway the titles are close enough that you can find them. I liked them better than any other. My copies are gone because they were so worn and frayed and I will never need them again or I would send them to you.

Oh, and slather on the A&D to protect his little pooper shooter.
Poor little guy.

Rule of thumb

Whenever you deal with elderly folks or little babies always tell yourself "If I am not sure go seek help" It is good the fever is going down and like mentioned earlier, if you breastfeed it could be something you ate. If not, jave you changed formulas. Either way, pedialyte is good with the runs.

Typically go with the kid's behavior. If he is acting abnormal, it is time to take action. If he feels well enough to act his usual self, it is rare there is anything to worry about.

I can't remember his age, but when teething begins, most babies have these symptoms. (And early teething is not unheard of--Louis the 14th was born with several teeth.) Baby tyelnol is the drug of choice. Be careful with medicating at the first sign of fever though, fever is the body's way of killing something nasty inside. If the fever is indeed low-grade, typically you should let it be. If this fever goes on for more than a day, a dr visit might be in order and you should be aware of febrile seizures--not something to learn about in a crisis.

Good luck.

Pedialyte is good to give him if he has the runs...usually milk and anything he eats will make it worse. Calling the doc is the best idea but if he's not in and you have no one else to call I wouldn't give him any more milk or food...just the pedialyte untill tomorrow when you can call your doctor. Vinny has made the best suggestion so far. Tempra or any infant acetaminophen drops for the fever.

Good Luck!

Be sure to get back to us with an update!

Yes! Pedialyte for diarrhea.

Good Luck

Yep, go with what Vinny said. And keep the lil guy warm and happy. Babies have low grade fevers often. But when mixed with the runny stools or vomiting, then it is time to worry, especially if baby is cranky and unhappy.

ER's should only be visited on the advice of the doctor or if there is no other option. When baby is that small, exposing them to the high stress of an ER and all the tests they want to do ( that are sometimes only necessary when the doc's do not know your baby and his medical history well ) creates a very unhappy baby and a very stressed out mommie. Especially when baby just has a little touch of a cold.

Good luck, and do call his doctor. Almost every doctor has a way to be reached after hours now days.

Be aware that if you are freaking out in any way, they will be legally obligated to advise you take jr to the ER. We recommend this to people all the time, both during office hours and afterward. It is the "When in doubt..." rule.

I have not seen a comment about that baby's disposition. How is he reacting to this or is he at all?
