panic attacks-- antibiotics
Has anyone ever heard of panic attacks induced by antibiotics? After taking some for a sinus infection I seem to be having them. I never had them before. I am affected even after I have been off the meds for sometime. Please help!!!!

No, I've never heard of an association between panic attacks and antibiotics, but that doesn't mean it's not possible.

This sounds like a question that should be asked of the doctor who prescribed the antibiotics instead of here.

It might be a strange allergic reaction, or it might be a temporary condition caused by the inner ear draining and readjusting as the infection is cleared up, but it's definiely something that should be looked into.

Here, in the Netherlands and Belgium it is written on the information, that comes with antibiotics, that one of the possible side effects is panic attacks. So that means that it sometimes happens.
The past two weeks I had a really bad throat infection and I was on antibiotics as well. My doctor informed me of possible side effects, including panic attacks. I felt a little weird during the second and the third day that I took them but I am not sure if that was caused by the fever or the antibiotics. A friend of mine, was on antibiotics ones and suddenly started to think there were spiders hiding under her bed.
Anyway, I think you should get in touch with your doctor and inform him/her. Especially since you still have panic attacks, now that you don't take the antibiotics anymore.

Hope you feel better soon. :)

Did they give you decongestants for your sinus infection? Those things make me feel like I've been smoking crack...

Also check and make sure they didn't give you steroids to go with them. I was "'roid raged" for a week when they gave 'em to me...

I had first posted this thread on the GB. I have just cut and pasted some of the info I left there.

I called my Dr. with I first had the symptoms. My heart was pounding, I could not swallow, my face was itchy, a general feeling of loss of control. At the time I felt it was just a bad reaction to the meds. I called Dr. she said to stop taking them, which I have. But even 2 weeks later I have had similar attacks. I did some research online and learned I was having signs of panic attacks. So I did more research and I found a little bit of info relating this med. to panic attacks, tendon problems, heart problems, and so much other crap. It is a simliar drug to Cipro, the drug of choice for the Anthrax scare. There have been some lawsuits regarding the same issues I am having. I was hoping someone had some more insight. Thanks.

Just for your info, about two years ago my urologist diagnosed me with a protate infection and prescribed Cipro for that ailment. I cannot say that I had the *same* side affects that you described, but mine were severe. I called and they changed the prescription to another antibiotic that for the life of me I cannot remember the name of. Something I had not taken before.

While my symptoms from the Cipro left, others cropped up. The itching from the Cipro was now gone, but continued to feel terrible. Constant pain, anxious and couldn't sleep very well. I suspected this was all from the original condition. After more then a month of this, the Dr prescribed the antibiotic regimine again and thats when I decided to get a 2nd opinion. A urologist at Hopkins in Baltimore. Xrays, again. Cat scan, again and he found nothing wrong. There was no infection to begin with. Told me to get off of the antibiotics as he thought they were probably making me sick. He was right. Within less then a week, I felt much better then I had in about 2 months.

For me, when in doubt, get a second opinion. This was NOT the first time the original diagnosis was wrong for me, but I HOPE that it will be the last.

I really don't like cipro, I have really problems with, my pet guinea pig also had problems with it too ;)

I find Zithromax works as well, although some times I need 2 z paks instead of one.
