This past summer, during the height of Trump's hysteria about riots in Portland, I had to travel up there to finish a construction contract. Two of my conservative construction associates (a concrete contractor and an electrician) back in Arizona kept texting me asking about what I was doing to secure my construction site in Portland.

Portland is fucking huge. It took me over an hour to travel across that town to pick up certain supplies. The whole time I was there, I did not see a single sign of a riot, because the most active demonstrations were confined to such a tiny area downtown. As a matter of fact, it felt like the summer of love throughout most of the city, with people walking to parks, and carrying on conversations while respecting the social distancing protocols. That's a beautiful city, with gardens everywhere.

But, I did get a big kick out of all the pearl-clutching by my macho fellow contractors back in Arizona.
