Happy Ostara Everyone!
Winter’s bareness has subsided,
From the death of winter springs new life!
Spring is coming to the land..
The days grow longer, warm breezes begin to stir…
All around me I see signs…
The growing things are beginning anew
It is a resurrection of the dance of life
The dance of the stems and the stalks
As they push forth from the Earth
It is the season of creation
Growth has turned outward.
The land has become fertile again...
Winter’s bareness has subsided,

Blessings and a special thank you to Dhalgren150 who's beautiful words have inspired my dance for this evening's large, public ritual. The symbol of my black knitted lace-patern shawl will help inspire thoughts of a colder, darker time that is gradually shed as I work my way down to the floor where a large frame drum will by picked up in the East and moved about to honor the return of the sun. The frame drum is bound by leather laces that form a perfect wheel of eight on the back which will be symbolically turned as well. Though basically dark, the skirt is covered in beautiful flowers and rows of colorful ribbons. The piece will end with joyous bellydancing and others may be inspired to join in. This will be improvised with the drumming talents of those in attendance.
May we all celebrate the Reception of Wisdom,
as we face the dawn rays of the rising sun on the first morning of Spring.
It is a beautiful morn' here in the west after yet another big rain storm.

We had a lovely little Ostara ritual today in a public park...it was an interesting sensation to have spectators at a ritual! Unfortunately, it seemed to really throw off a few of the members but we held the energy together anyway. It was a lovely day for an egg hunt; I haven't had one of those in years! It's great to have folks that still remember to incorporate FUN into ritual and faith. Stodgy ritual and belief have no draw for me...

Wow! Mae's post just reminded me of my very first ritual experience. It was Ostara 1990 and it was in this beautiful little wayside park! And yes, there were some outsiders watching but everyone was respectful and no one was put off, to the best of my recollection!

Hello Image and others! It's always good to find more interesting pagan folk online! I, myself, am an eclectic pagan on the path of learning and just gathering knowledge in general. I've finished a publication by Scott Cunningham called Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practioner. I'm still learning, everyday, something new.

Aww duude... it was so rad! My daughter would have loved it, so next time we meet with this group she'll get to go. The dance went well with a flute and then the didj came with the rise of the sun in the east along with many drums. Some women thought I was honoring the frame drum I was holding and didn't get that it was supposed to be the sun, but that's cool. The bare titty fairy folk frolicked quite a bit and the candles taken home were well charged.

I was the leader of the Pagan Alliance at my university (our majority was Wiccan, but we welcomed anyone who followed a non-mainstream faith). I found that one of the best ways to prevent ignorance and intolerance was to talk directly with the other religious organizations on campus. Talking with the leaders of those organizations and even with the clergy associated with them helped them understand that we were real people, and it gave them a chance to ask us questions and voice any concerns they may have had.
While the Christian/Catholic groups genererally just stayed out of our path, many members from Hillel (Jewish campus group) came to our events and weekly meetings to learn more about us. It's great when people seek to expand their knowledge, instead of fearing what they don't know.
The GLBTA group on campus was another huge ally - they understood so well what it was like to be misunderstood and even hated. They came in very helpful for hosting larger events that we couldn't fund on our own, like our annual Halloween costume ball (which was followed by a Samhain ritual held at a separate location). Getting involved in your campus community as a group really can make a difference in how people view you. View yourselves as part of your college community, not as outsiders.
Some other things my group did to prevent intolerance and dispell myths about paganism:
- Held question & answer sessions entitled "Paganism: 101" every semester
- Held movie nights where we showed films like "The Craft" and "Hocus Pocus" then dispelled some of the myths that the movies created
- Tarot reading nights (charged $2 per reading... great fundraiser)
- Reiki, massage & reflexology night ($2 per treatment.. we happened to have people trained in these techniques, so we put it to good use)
- Held public rituals (wiccan tradition) - people were invited to join in, or sit out and watch; campus police were present at these, but we never had a problem
