should i delete ranting/rude/preaching entries from my story comments? they don't really bother me so i haven't done so to date. [plus i'm just stubborn enough to leave them displayed out of spite] however, since they seem pointless and boring, i have recently considered a more stringent editorial standard. thanks for any suggestions.

Delete comments with profanity, leave the rest, people deserve to know that idiots read your stories as well as intelligent folk.

If the preaching was valid and you considered a more stringent editorial standard, obviously the comments had some value.

I don't really think those comments matter. Most people would read your story and form their own opinions about it, not scroll down to read the comments first. If someone was swayed by a bunch of spiteful comments, I think they're sick in the head anyway and would one-bomb you no matter what.

I think the best response to those comments is a humorous rejoinder of your own. That'll amuse readers going over your comments and will also take the sting out of the oh-so-serious flamer.

I pretty much leave all the comments. I don't really get bad ones, but it wouldn't effect me. I don't think people are going to take the words of an illiterate moron too seriously when making a decision.

I leave them, too

I have only ever deleted one nasty comment that I can recall - and now I can't even recall what it was or why I zapped it.

I leave them all there, for the world to see, even the ones that declare with absolute certainty that I am either an idiot, I am going to hell, or my characters are going to hell, etc. Ignoring the ignoramuses is the best result. Any kind of response is only likely to goad them into launching more missiles against that particular story or others.

Plus, it let's everyone else know what a tolerant, fiar, open-minded, thoroughly decent (as well as incredibly talented author you are. And it gives other readers a chance to have something to poke fun at with their comments.

Sin.
