Pelosi avoids Fast and Furious, fails to vote with Democrats demanding accountability

House Minority Leader Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California is openly choosing to neither defend nor criticize Attorney General Eric Holder’s failure to comply with a congressional subpoena into Operation Fast and Furious.

On Wednesday evening, Democrats overwhelming voted to support a measure pushed by Utah Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz that demanded accountability from the Obama administration in Operation Fast and Furious:

142 House Democrats — including Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz — voted in favor of Chaffetz’s amendment that prevents the Department of Justice from using taxpayer funds to lie to Congress. Another 41 Democrats voted against it, and there were a few members from both parties who abstained from voting.

One of those members who abstained from voting was Pelosi, the former House Speaker and the current Democratic Minority Leader. Her spokesman Nadeam Elshami hasn’t returned The Daily Caller’s request for comment on why she chose to abstain from the vote.

Pelosi did vote on different measures around 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, and also voted on a different measure than the Fast and Furious one seven minutes after Chaffetz’s amendment passed.

The former Speaker’s spokesman reaffirmed Pelosi support for Holder in March, around the same time Wasserman Schultz said she backed the Attorney General “100 percent.” Now, however, Pelosi appears to be distancing herself from the issue as scores of her House Democrats join the GOP’s efforts to hold Holder accountable.

More in the pattern of the Administration's MO

We also know from another media lapdog, John Broder of the New York Times, that Steven Chu prematurely stopped BP's efforts before their top kill program had completed its final two steps. Mr. Mix is sure to know the specific details of that program and any government interference with the BP plan. So he possibly could be the star witness against Steven Chu and company. That is a possible motive to attempt witness intimidation.

So the question before us is, did the administration deliberately sabotage BP's top kill efforts for political reasons? They were in the midst of trying to pass "Cap and Trade" legislation in the Senate so as to take control of the energy business through taxation and regulation and thereby promote their political crony capitalist allies in the "green energy" sector. If they have nothing to hide, they need to fully comply with the legal requests for documents from the various investigations in the executive, legislative and judicial branches of the government. Let the public know the whole truth. That's the least we should expect from the "most transparent administration in history."

Issa: Wiretaps show 'immense detail' about questionable Fast & Furious tactics

A House investigative committee said Tuesday it has obtained new information from wiretaps related to the Obama administration’s Operation Fast and Furious that suggests high-ranking officials know more than they are telling Congress about the flawed weapons sting.

The announcement appears to be the latest attempt by GOP Rep. Darrell Issa, chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, to press U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder into providing Congress with more information about the operation and an account of which officials knew about any problems -- and when.

Boehner spokesman:
NY Times story about Holder Fast and Furious compromise is false

A spokesman for Speaker of the House John Boehner told The Daily Caller on Tuesday night that the New York Times published a false story alleging the speaker is trying to cut a deal with Attorney General Eric Holder over congressional subpoenas related to the Operation Fast and Furious scandal.

The Times reported late on Tuesday that Boehner had “opened direct negotiations with the Department of Justice aimed at resolving a dispute over subpoenaed information related to the botched gun-trafficking investigation dubbed Operation Fast and Furious.” The story ran under the headline “Boehner in talks with Justice Dept. on gun-running inquiry.”

Boehner spokesman Michael Steel, however, said the report is not true. He alleged that it illustrated a Holder-friendly bias among some establishment media outlets.

“This story shows how the mainstream media is ignoring this scandal and covering up for the Department of Justice,” Steel wrote in an email to TheDC.

“Staff for the speaker, other leadership offices, and Chairman Issa have been encouraging Attorney General Holder’s staff to comply for weeks or months to no avail, but there have certainly been no direct talks between the speaker and attorney general, and the department is still stonewalling.”

In a blog post attacking the Times, Boehner’s office wrote that neither the newspaper nor reporter Charlie Savage reached out to Boehner’s team before publishing the story. The post also noted that the speaker’s staff sent a statement to the Times after Savage’s allegations appeared online.

The story was posted at 6:51 p.m., according to a time stamp on the Times website.

Savage did not immediately respond to TheDC’s request for comment. He has printed other incorrect information about the ill-fated Fast and Furious gunwalking program in the past.

The Times story came just hours after House oversight committee chairman Rep. Darrell Issa announced that his committee had obtained evidence proving that senior Justice Department officials approved the tactics used in Fast and Furious.

Specifically, Issa said his committee has “obtained copies of six wiretap applications in support of seven wire intercepts utilized during Fast and Furious.” Those documents, he said, “show that immense detail about questionable investigative tactics was available to the senior officials who reviewed and authorized them.”

Issa explained that the documents prove that Holder and other Justice Department officials in the Obama administration provided false statements to Congress.

In a letter later on Tuesday, Deputy Attorney General James Cole told Republican House leaders that the DOJ hopes to reach an agreement with congressional overseers on how much information about Operation Fast and Furious it is required to hand over. “While our staffs continue to discuss these issues, I want to reiterate that I remain available to meet with you personally,” he wrote.

But regardless of what the Times reported, Steel said no such meeting has happened — nor is one likely in the future.

In response to Issa’s revelations Tuesday, House Oversight Committee Ranking Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings sent Issa a letter alleging that he omitted key facts that disprove his allegations. The publicly available version of the letter, however, has been redacted to block Cummings’ argument.

UPDATE: 2:30 a.m.:

After The Daily Caller reached out to Savage for comment, pointing out how Boehner’s office said his article was false, The New York Times edited his story removing the statement Boehner’s office said was false and changing the focus of the article, while adding a quote from Boehner’s spokesman. The online version of the article contains no correction or explanation as to why Savage’s story was changed after the fact. A note tells readers the article was “updated” at 11:39 p.m.

Savage has still not returned TheDC’s request for comment on why he printed false information to begin with and why he made no effort to contact Boehner’s office to check the veracity of his unattributed claims before printing the inaccurate information.

Fast and Furious: Why Eric Holder Will Lose the Legal Fight

Federal courts could soon decide a fight between Congress and Attorney General Eric Holder on the Operation Fast and Furious gun-running scandal. If Republicans persevere, this is a battle that Holder should lose in what would be a humiliating defeat for President Barack Obama.

Most Americans have now heard that our government allowed drug cartels to illegally smuggle thousands of guns from the U.S. into Mexico. The National Rifle Association has relentlessly pursued the White House and Department of Justice (DOJ) about Fast and Furious for over a year, and the massive gun-rights organization has only increased its focus in recent months.

Senator Moran Leads Efforts Against U.N. Gun Ban Treaty--Restriction on Funding for U.N. Treaty Passes U.S. House Committee

As called for by a resolution adopted by the U.N. General Assembly in 2009, a conference will be held in July 2012, in New York City, to draft the treaty's language. On a parallel track, the ridiculously named Preparatory Committee for the United Nations Conference to Review Progress Made in the Implementation of the Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects--held its most recent Preparatory Conference in New York earlier this year.

NRA has tracked the Programme and the Arms Trade Treaty process since their inceptions, with NRA's Institute for Legislative Action even acquiring "non-governmental organization" status to give it greater ability to monitor the progress and direction of these insidious efforts.

In March of this year, U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kans.) introduced legislation to prevent any arms treaty from infringing the right to keep and bear arms in the United States. The "Second Amendment Sovereignty Act," S. 2205, would prohibit the administration from using "the voice, vote, and influence of the United States, in connection with negotiations for a United Nations Arms Trade Treaty, to restrict in any way the rights of United States citizens under the second amendment to the Constitution of the United States, or to otherwise regulate domestic manufacture, assembly, possession, use, transfer, or purchase of firearms, ammunition, or related items, including small arms, light weapons, or related materials."

Last year, Sen. Moran and 57 other senators signed a letter to President Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton reminding them that the Senate has final say on treaties, and stating their unequivocal opposition to any treaty that would affect civilian ownership of firearms, challenge the authority of Congress to regulate firearms within the United States, or call for an international gun registry.

30 Seconds! Fast&Furious!

In the eighteen months since the Operation Fast & Furious investigation began, Brian Williams and NBC Nightly News have never mentioned the Department of Justice's gunwalking controversy. Every single time Mr. Holder has testified or a major development happened, NBC Nightly News ignored it. Tonight, in their first mention of the scandal--ever--NBC Nightly News and Brian Williams distorted Attorney General Eric Holder’s testimony.
