After nearly three months of coronavirus-related shutdowns that put tens of millions of Americans out of work, destroyed untold numbers of businesses, and shuttered schools across the land, the World Health Organization now says asymptomatic carriers of COVID-19 — cited as one of the reasons for social distancing policies — rarely spread the virus, CNBC reported.

The WHO's revelation Monday followed preliminary findings from earliest COVID-19 outbreaks that those without symptoms could spread the virus to others, the network said.

"From the data we have, it still seems to be rare that an asymptomatic person actually transmits onward to a secondary individual," said Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of WHO's emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, according to CNBC. "It's very rare."

Thanks, miles.

That's what I have been saying. They imbued this virus with magical properties unseen in any similar, related viruses.

Those selfish bastards. We should make them wear masks anyway.

If you read the actual WHO report, they differentiate between asymptomatic and "pre-symptomatic" individuals.

Bottom line: just because you are showing no symptoms, it doesn't mean you can't pass on the infection. You can pass on the infection before you start showing symptoms.

Right. That's an important thing to know, especially as it pertains to possibly reopening schools. But it's pretty obvious that the disease could never have become this widespread if it wasn't being spread by people prior to showing symptoms. It's the key difference between SARS and Covid-19.

Its important to remember this. I wear a mask when I go shopping these days (though to be honest I frickin hate doing it) because... I could already have the disease, and be giving it to people, and not even know it- until two or three days later when the fever and coughing starts. And if the local shopkeeper dies of an illness because of me, I would never forgive myself.

Conager, and HisArpy don't read the links, they just jump on board with which ever one's line up and reinforce their opinions.....

When Science "evolves" it's funny how a handful of us were so prescient
at the outset of this and the nature of the politically-driven panic...

... and how unapologetic those are who went with the government-driven narrative
for being wrong and doing more harm than good to the lives of everyone, especially
those like themselves, the True Believers. I still maintain the this was more about
President Trump than it ever was SARS-CoV-2 or Communist Chinese culpability...

^they are probably the same person anyway.

That would be a negative Ghost Rider...

I have ZERO Alts. Now, some of the board puppet masters might take issue with that statement, but it's true. I don't have any Alts and I have no plans to ever create one (or more).

God knows the board would probably go full woke-y-ness meltdown if there were more than 1 of me here.

Lol.

Sarcasm seems to be beyond your ken. It seems that's the way it is for you about most things.

They just said it was 'very rare' a day earlier

Here's what Dr. Maria Van Kerkhove, head of WHO's emerging diseases and zoonosis unit, said Monday about the potential for people with no symptoms to spread COVID-19 to others:

From the data we have, it still seems to be rare that an asymptomatic person actually transmits onward to a secondary individual. It's very rare. … We have a number of reports from countries who are doing very detailed contact tracing. They're following asymptomatic cases. They're following contacts. And they're not finding secondary transmission onward. It's very rare.

Tuesday, Van Kerkhove said it's a "really complex question" and that their models show that as much as 40% of COVID-19 transmission may come from asymptomatic cases. From CNBC:

"We don't actually have that answer yet. There are some estimates that suggest that anywhere between 6% of the population and 41% of the population may be infected but not have symptoms within a point estimate of around 16%," she said on a live Q&A streamed across multiple social media platforms.

The wording choice by WHO and Maria Van Kerkhove is indeed causing confusion, but she did clarify this on Twitter .

Asymptomatic and pre-symptomatic individuals are infected but do not show symptoms of infection.

Asymptomatic individuals DO NOT EVER show symptoms.
Pre-symptomatic individuals will EVENTUALLY show symptoms.

Asymptomatic individuals do not seem to be a large factor in transmission of the virus to others, given the limited data (understand, it is hard to identify and do contact tracing with such people).

In contrast, pre-symptomatic individuals do seem to play an important role in transmitting the virus to others during the days PRIOR to when they begin showing symptoms. These pre-symptomatic cases are much more easy to identify (retrospectively, at least) and study when tracing the outbreak.

Masks are for costume play and Halloween, not shopping.

If WHO, CDC, Mayo Clinic, the Surgeon General and Dr. Fauci say masks are a good idea, I'm going to do the opposite, because they are all idiots and don't know what they''re talking about.

Okay, sorry dude. I do know some people (Conager included) do have several alt/sock puppet accounts on here.

I have had Covid and didn’t pass to any of the family members living in the same house of me... there are 5. I was sleeping with one of them too.
