OOC: Loa Blood (needs more characters)
This is a super-hero thread. I'm hoping for original super-heroes only please, no existing comic-book characters. Also, please make characters low-powered street-level crimefighters for now (more Daredevil, less Superman), they will grow in power quickly.
All super-beings got their powers through exposure to the strange substance called Loa Blood (see below). They could have been scientists researching the stuff, truckers, pilots, or smugglers transporting it, military test sujects, junkies, religious fanatics, or regular people who were exposed through an industrial accident.
High-tech heroes, including robots, and non-powered heroes (like Punisher or Batman) are also cool. So are sidekicks, police, reporters, scientists, anyone who might have regular contact with super-heroes.
Still interested? Post a character idea and I'll see if there are enough people to bother starting it up. When giving your character a nationality, make up a nation, giving a few details about it (rich/poor, big/small, north/south, island/mainland).
Here are the nations we know about so far:
Argo: Eastern continent. Largest, most powerful country. Bay City is on the south-west coast, near Dracon Island. Home of the Coda Corporation. Argons have coal-black skin with flecks of gold.
Aralia: Part of the Argon supercontinent. High technology. Many Aralian immigrants to Argo have formed the Killer Bee gang. Aralians have silver hair. (Nikki)
Svetla: Southern continent with a land bridge to Argo. Made up of many small countries, all poor, overpopulated, arrid. Svetlanders have blood-red skin. Weavers are nomadic people who came to Svetla from the northern countries like Sejeala and Aralia. They have pale skin and red hair, and are known for their mysticism.
Phrygia: Western continent, shaped like a maple leaf, made up of many small countries. Most Phrygians have gold skin and black hair.
Locrir: Part of the Phrygian continent. Long known for it's art and culture, Locrir recently came under the control of a warmongering dictator. (Kryna)
Reva: Part of the Phyrygian continent. Allied with Locrir. (Dex)
Petang: Small Phrygian nation, recently taken over by Locrir.
Dracon Island: Off the coast of Argo, monarchic nation doing Loa research for the Argon Coda Corporation. Industrial accident left Dracon uninhabitable, a wasteland of mutant monsters. Most surviving Draconians have emmigrated to Argo. (Damien, Crown Prince)
Amun Island: Ancient belief in many animalistic gods. Loa experiments on humans. (Sugar)
Marrow Island: Small, out of the way island. No one really knows anything about them. Recently taken over by Argo. Marrowen have white hair. (Ghost)
While I'm at it:
The Wheel: Major world religion. Has come into question since the discovery of Loa disproves the Wheel's version of history, humanity and God.
GAIA: The Global Administrative Intelligence Authority. An international agency that tries (with little success) to keep global peace. GAIA operates the Loa digging station in the Antarctic, and distributes Loa Blood to it's member nations for study.
Coda Corporation: Argon-based research and technology company. Responsible for much of the country's Loa research, and for the Dracon Island disaster.
Below is some more background on the setting.

It's the modern day or a very near future. Ideally, I'd like to set this in a parallel world, and have earth-like climate, fauna, politics, culture, etc. but different geography (continent shapes) and countries (different names, but analogous. Maybe mix things up, so dark skins are the authorities in power, or use different racial types altogether). Anyway, the point would be that it's very like our world, with some countries doing a lot better then others, and a history of racial inequality and religious tension, but it's not our world. This way you can have a super-terrorist group without associating them with any real nation, race or religion.
So, assume a world basically like ours. An antarctic research project, jointly funded by a few very wealthy nations, discovers what is unquestionably an ancient alien site deep in the continent's frozen interior. The thing is huge. The aliens were giants, Godzilla size, and they'd built towers that dwarf human skyscrapers, now mostly buried under the ice. What the research team finds are a few of these towers, which were once small parts of impossibly huge spacecraft, and the tombs of a few of the aliens, which they call Loa. The Loa, while all giant, all look very different, and may represent a number if different alien races that were all working together. It seems the Loa came to Earth a very long time ago, terraformedit and seeded it with life. They may even have created the planet and solar system from scratch for their experiment. Basically, the Loa had godlike powers, and could do anything. So, they hung around and guided life in the direction they wanted it to go, to evolve dinosaurs. They also produced some dinosaur-like biological robots, to walk among and observe the dinos. Over the milenia, a few of the Loa died, who knows how, and they were entombed near the laboratory towers on their experimental planet. Then, mysteriously, all of the living Loa left Earth. Maybe funding for their project was pulled. Maybe a crisis elsewhere in the universe demanded their attention. Maybe they were finished. Maybe they were bored. Anyway, before they left, they engineered an event that killed all of the large dinosaurs, presumably so that they would never develop sentience / culture. They allowed the smaller animals to survive, and left their enhanced bio-robot dino-creatures (we can call them dragons, or monsters), behind, to ensure that none of those small animals ever evolved out of hand.
Well, maybe the Ice Age damaged the monsters. They didn't recognize mammals as a threat until too late, and were focusing on wiping out mammoths, sloths and saber-tooth cats when humans developed got organized and started killing the monsters. By the time humans developed metalworking, monsters were already very rare, and by the time they invented gunpowder, monsters were extinct, the stuff of distant legend.
So now people have discovered the original Loa site. They start digging up and experimenting with the Loa technology (including the monster-creation bio-robot technology), and with the Loa bodies themselves. But the first people to dig up a Loa body get a nasty surprise. Exposure to a Loa's body causes super-human mutation, as some of the Loa's incredible powers are absorbed by any organism they touch. The more you are exposed to, the more you mutate, so the ones who first dug up an entire giant corpse were changed into barely human things, with out of control powers.
Later, The UN claims ownership of the Loa site. They use robots and protective gear to extract small pieces of the Loa, and bring them to the wealthiest countries for research. The Loa parts, usually refered to as Loa blood, are incredibly powerful. Even a small tissue sample can be diluted and used by many different labs in developing fuels, medicines, and creating super-beings.
Exposure to Loa blood is dangerous and unpredictable. Often it kills, or transforms the subject into an insane, inhuman superpowered thing. When it does bestow super-powers (Loa gifts) the powers are usually drawn from the subject's subconscious, or are a response to their environment. For example, the first Loa body was dug up by two scientists in the Antarctic. One was thinking about the giant thing he had found in the ice, and was transformed into a huge giant made of ice. One was affraid that the thing she had found would be harmful, contaminated, and she herself became contaminated, rotting the flesh of anyone who even comes near her. So, over time, researchers may be able to produce specific super-powers in subjects by controling the environment, mood, and thoughts of the subject. However, strong subconscious images have a tendency to work themselves into the Loa Gift too. One man who was accidentally exposed to Loa's blood in a transportation leak developed the power to transform at will into his childhood home.
Aside from having great scientific uses, the Loa also have great religious significance. Here is proof that the beings that created our world annd us (albeit unintentionally) really existed. They walked on Earth. Here are their bodies. And on the black market, you can even buy a few cells, kept in a specially sealed vial, of God's body. Of course, everybody wants the stuff, no matter how dangerous and expensive it is. So powerful criminal syndicates hijack scientific shipments, and compete for control of the street sales of Loa blood as religious icons. Certain established religions, of course, see this as blasphemy, and try to destroy the stuff or prevent it's sale. Most of the world, however, is converted to Loa-worship. Many worshipers believe that since the Loa only intended to create the lower forms of life (like insects and reptiles), that these are in fact the highest forms of life. These worshipers strive to think as dinosaurs, and follow the cold-blooded instincts of the base animal mind. While there are some truely enlightened Loa-followers, who focus on the purity and simplicity of reptile thought, this kind of thinking mostly produces waves of slothful apathy and brutal rage, especially among poor illitterate peoples whose societies are denied the scientific benefits of the Loa discoveries.
See, the UN-owned technology and Loa blood is all shipped from Antarctica to a few wealthy nations, the ones with the facilites to use it for research. Those nations get all the benefits of super-fuels, medicies, weapons, and super heros. The rest of the world has to wait for the trickle down, and the black market.Argo
