OOC: AD&D based, Starting soon

Oh, um... I thought this was just going to be just D&D based. If you're getting into the nitty gritty of it... I'm really not sure if I'm capable of doing this... coz you all seem like you know a bit more than I do... let me know.

DW ~

I am in the dark, as much as you are. EverQuest has standard stats for each race & they give you so many pt to put toward tweeking the character. I still havent played a paper & dice RPG. Everytime my friend trys to get a game together it falls apart. Besides I suck at rolling dice.

sheeze I hate when I type faster in my head than on the keyboard.

the only thing i can think of adding is some type of family background/ descriptions of your character would also help..

i love the use of stats.. that helps alot *smile* i don't think i will kill anyone off unless they wish it.. to either leave or start a new character...

All his other information was included in an earlier post, i was just too lazy to edit the original one.lol

AD&D / Elfquest

I don't think it's gonna be a problem, I already figured that Role playing on a bulletin board is gonna be a lot different to sitting around drinking 'Buds' and rolling dice.

The important thing is to have fun.

If you guys like, I can put together some quick webpages that briefly describe each of the races and character classes. I think there has to be a degree of latitude with the game play given that the rule set for AD&D is so vast.

The important thing is to have fun and enjoy the game. No-one is gonna pick faults because people aren't up to speed with it all in many cases the abilities are just modifiers for the dice rolls, since we aren't gonna be using any dice they just give some idea of the ability of each player before they start.

Being realistic etc. I quoted my spells those are the ones I can cast each day, or between meditaions and rest periods. I limits what I can do. For example, having informed the DM of my spells learnt for the day I can't just go casting something that is appropriate if I haven't got it or if I have already used it. A bit like having a machine gun with unliited rounds if you see what I mean.

If I run out of spells I have to fight or run. Usually at first level there is a lot of running in AD&D :) - but that doesn't mean characters don't get experience. Sometimes you get more for the running away as opposed to fighting a futile battle and dying :)

Lets all have a good time, I have loads of info and I am sure Jeselynn also has a load of AD&D 1st Edition sources. Helping each other I am sure this will be a great thread.

Imagination is the only obstacle :)

Actually, SM that would be great if you could post some more indepth information for us all. I have some of my original D&D books back from 1978 but I have not looked at a newer one pretty much since then. I am just looking to have some fun in here, so if I get out of line let me know.

Chewey

By the way, SM, I really like the new Avatar. Some of your other ones were great, but it would be very hard to concentrate on the game looking as some of the other av's LOL

Ok, I just did not know if we were going for more realism here or not .

Intelligence: now 14
Wisdom: now 13
Charisma : now 16

Ok, I feel better now. Hope this does not screw anything up for you Jeselynn

Believe me this is not going to change any of the game.. *smile*

be assured that since we are just now getting all together that it won't change any of my plans...

Do you want any of us to play more than one character here so that we have the amount of adventurers that you originally wanted? If so, what race/profession would you want? I am running a couple of characters in another thread , so I would not have a problem using another if you like. Let me know.

Chewey

it's up to you guys, i don't mind if you play more than one character.. I like the small set up as it is now... mostly because I think it will be easier to keep everyone from getting lost.. and the day to day swing of things are moving along good right now.. I think later down the line of this game that we might slide a few more players in ...

*smile* right now let's work with what we have...

Chewy you need to catch up

Chewey, thanxs for role playing, it was brief but enjoyable, at least we got two of the characters together but now I'm afraid its back to monologues and soliloquies.

Sorry Guys I'm out of here, I tried, again, but no one reads the detail. Whats the point of role playing when everyone wants to be in a different day. I can't deal with that, so I have done the same as everyone else - I jumped ahead and out of the plot.

Chewy I suggest you just write a bit that says,

'I drink my beer, look at the fire, don't bother to interact with anything, go to bed, have some breakfast, ignore the day - its 6.00pm lets party.'

Sorry does that sound barbed and cynical, it's meant to, I don't know why I waste my time. Sound out of character for me, actually it is, but I am so fed up with putting time and effort into these things and no-one reads the plot or the previous thing, just go right on ahead and make some bits up that sound cool but totally out of time frame and context.

have fun.

I am editing this post because I took the previous post too much too heart. I agree with SM that we have to have a better time sense as a group. Maybe a suggestion, does the idea of posting a time (morning , afternoon, evening, dead of night ect... in the subject line) sound like a good idea? That way we can all kind of synch up our timing. If not that is fine, just an idea.

I agree that sounds like a very good idea.. I shall start that

Well I'm happy with the idea and willing to continue but - there still seems to be a 12 hour difference so unless this is some really freaky kind of thought transference thing that is happening in the bar I'll wait to see if its 9.00am or 9.00pm before I venture back from my room.

added...

Just one point.

quote from the thread

'When I tell you that i start in the evening and go through what i do all night and then say i notice it's morning, and go eat.

I would like you to tell me what you did in this SAME time line.
'

If you adopt that kind of thread no one will interact.. the whole point of role playing is surely to interact not write 'my diary' entries.

new character

Name: Halia Westron
Gender: Female
Race: Human
Physical:
grey eyes, dark hair cropped short, 5'6" slim and strong

I am not sure about class because I havn't played AD&D for a long time in the gaming system i use at present anyone can use magic as long as they have a Magic ability stat of over 35 (out of 100) Halia's magic ability is 75%
I would like to keep her magic ability so maybe i should change her race to elven from what i remember they can use magic and be fighter/ranger types as well - any tips anyone?

Strength: 15
Stamina: 15
Agility: 15
Dexterity: 16
Wisdom: 17
Intelligence: 18
Charisma: 16

Skills: Survival (woods); streetsmarts; R&W Elven Speaks Elven (wood elf and high elf); ride; read magic; (she has more normally but I am not sure which ones are relveant here also I saw that we are trying to start everyone at level 1

Weapon skills: longbow(advanced), sword (advanced), hand-hand(intermediate), throwing knives (basic)

Weapons / Equipment:
beautiful longsword -specially forged for her and balanced to her hand; several knives tucked into boots and belt; no bow at present;
backpack contains: rope: firestone; spellbook; clean shirt: dress: mail shirt:

She wears wellmade leather leggings with high boots, a white laced shirt and a leather Jacket: a long sleevless, light but warm woollen robe covers it all

halia is an expereinced warrior but woudl never consider herself to be just a fighter, when asked she says adventurer if anything. She comes forma distant island that was settled many centuries ago by a mixture of elves and humans shipwrecked there. The island has a strong source of magic hidden on it and this source disrupts the weather patterns and the seas around the island meaning that for several centuires the inhabitants were completly isolated.In this period the elves and humans put aside their mutual dislake and forged a strong society were elven and human mingle, marry and work together freely. After some time they managed to find the magic source and since then they have been able to trade with other lands, they also are learning to tap into the magic and every ruler of the island has been linked to the source which allows them to protect the island and their people.
Another result of the source is that nearly every child born over the past two centuries has basic magic abilities however being isolated has meant that traditional spellcasting has died out and most people retain only very basic spells such as fire and light; however they have enhanced latent telepathic abilities and elemental magic.

ten years ago the island was attacked by a terrible enemy who sought to seize the magic source and use it for hteir own ends. They were defeated but at a great costs, not only in lives but in culture.
[think of how the first world war affected people in britain and europe]
Halia at that time barely sixteen was called to fight, she led a group into the occupied terriotory and for three years was part of a guerrilla network struggling to free the land and its people. Durign the war the commanders and rulers back at hime lost touch with those out in the field and a split began in society which has continued sonce betweent hose who were on the front lines, fighting terrible forces that drained life and magic leaving only shells - walking talking shells of humans and elves; and those who remained in the city - safe from the affects of the magic of the invader.

These experiences have meant that her natural personality which is witty, friendly, sensual and generous has an overlay of cycinism and bitterness; she has seen too much too young.

She is now travelling around seeking adventure away from her home land, needing to put time and distance between her and the memories.

Hope this is okay - i will now try and pick up the main thread

Welcome to the thread, petrel. That is a great introduction of a character. Jump on in, we are just getting started and getting the bugs all worked out.

Chewey

As far as advice, I would suggest asking Jeselynn or Snork Maiden, they are the resident experts on this subject.

Greetings and welcome. I think your character is set up fine for our game , and a human magic user is a tough character to play but well worth the effort, more so when I work it into the framework sofar.

*smile*

SO everyone knows, the plan is the travel and learn of the lands .. to return an object to dragonspyre mountains, and anlong the way fight and help others..

There will be a few twistes when it comes to planning and moving.. I hope you all will enjoy this

Hi Petrel, The main difference between Human characters and Non Human Characters is this.

Human characters do not have any level limitations what so ever on the classes they want to play.

Human character generally are not Multiclassed but can be Character with more than one class that's confusing isn't it :)

What it means is that you can pick the classes you want your character to be as opposed to the defined AD&D Multiclass character definitions for example

A human Character could be a Fighter/Assassin/Illusionist or
Ranger/Magic User.

there are obviously restrictions.

For example as Paladin/Cleric is allowable because the Cleric can be LG

but a Paladin/Druid does not work because Druids have to be True Neutral.

The benefits of Human Characters are that they suffer no penalties or Bonuses and can advance to any level

The benifit of Non Human Characters is that they have special abilities, but this is metered by level limitations and ability limitations.

Hopefully The tables on the attached page reflect that.

Also be aware that only certain Non Human Classes can be PC (Player Characters) some are reserved for NPC priveliges. In general Races like Drow (Dark) Elves are NPC's in 1st edition although later editions allow player characters to take on such roles. There are again good reasons why such races and halfbreeds from these races should be NPCs. Usually the alignment is not compatible with the PC party and also the environment. Drow Elves particularly are a difficult race to role play because of the gender bias in terms of classes and abilities, the environment and alignment.

Note also there are Racial Preferences obviously each Race prefers its own company, Humans will Tolerate most races, Elves and Dwarves however don't tend to get along. It can make for some fine role playing if there are dwarves in the party. Personally I think dwarves rock! but its not often you get people wanting to play them. They are very useful to have in dungeons for finding traps and secret doors etc and they have a good 'sense' of underground direction and depth'

If I am preaching to the knowledgeable please let me know.
but you need any other info please don't hesitate to ask. I can put weapon stats, braced weapon bonuses, effective weapons vs. Monster Class etc up if you wish.

Here is the Character Class Race Table.

Thanks Snork Maiden for that link . I had forgotten a ton of things like that, so I am breaking out my old D & D books from the closet. I always keep out the Monster Manual since I use that in a different thread .

Clarifications

In response to Quiet Cool's Post I agree that there should be clarification on the rules. I guess many of you guys think I am being a real pain but if a game is to work everyone needs to be aware what the rules are.

1st Level Characters are pretty feeble and don't tend to last more than a couple of minor melees a day, thats just how it is and reflects in the character's abilities and strength. As they gain experience they are able to fight longer and more effectively that is because of the game dynamics.

Already in this adventure we have characters with special abilities, characters with 'Magical Masks'. Not abilities gained but abilities and Magic Items self appointed.

I don't see that as being fair on the rest of the party members who really are nothing more at this point than a group of ordinary people who have come together to seek fame and fortune as adventurers.

If we are going to have 'open rules' then it needs to be stated now.

Personally I think that the characters should be AD&D characters not Elf Quest or any other character's They should be bound by the rules that govern those characters and the players should role play them with in the parameters of the race they choose to adopt.

Otherwise its not AD&D its just a fantasy role play.

IMHO there should be no 'special' abilities save those that come with race or class and certainly no special items unless they are found. Adding superlatives to weapons doesn't make that weapon any better either. A fine Bow and Ornate Bow, A well balanced scimitar is just a bow or scimitar, unless it is designated as a magic bow or magical sword etc, it shouldn't be assumed it's a better weapon.

1st level characters don't have much cash if any, certainly not enough to buy magical items. They just wouldn't have them.

If the DM think that as party, its need more strength, more fire power then it is up to him or her to put such items into the campaign milieu. One of the whole point to adventuring after all is to find magical treasure, gold and gems etc as well as progressing your character.

This is my view based on over 10 years of AD&D role playing and Dungeon Mastering.

I will yield ofcourse to any of our current DM's decisions since that is his/her perogative to adjust rules. But in such a case everyone needs to be aware just what the changes are and how they impact the party in general.

SM~

Its not Elf Quest a comic book & series. but Everquest an online game that you do travel & play a character in a virtual world.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If anyone had read my character post when it was posted on this OOC. I did state that she has this mask. Now since there is an objection to said mask. I have removed it from my character post & story line so it is not mentioned there.
If there are any other objection, could you please send me a PM. Now if the thread is going to be run strict AD&D then I guess I have to go run out & get a basic set. So I would know all the rules & stuff. Then nobody gets peeved I me for doing something wrong or anyone else doing the same.
nuff said.
