ExLimey here. I did something stupid today while snowblowing. I got the dog's "tether" wrapped up in the auger. Nothing broke, but I'll probably need to get a new one since he can break them pretty easily and now that it's been damaged it might be easier to break.

It's still snowing like hell and he won't be left outside until probably August the way this winter's going!

He currently has a tether that is a piece of aircraft wire (not sure how or why) wrapped in a plastic coating. The pissant ones they sell in the stores around here don't last more than a few months until he's snapped them. This one has some sort of 20,000 lb tensel (sp?) strength and has lasted 3 years. The plastic coating is cracked from the sun and it's rusting in spots so even without the snowblower I probably would need a new one.

Okay, if you've read this far I need to know of some good online pet suppliers. The one I ordered this tether from went out of business quite awhile ago.

Dog in question is a 70 lb Black Lab with separation anxiety who I should have named Houdini because he's managed to break most everything I leave him tied up with. I'd invest in a fence but I'm sure he'd just tunnel under and I'd need about 1500 feet to surround my property which would be way too expensive.

I'm sorry that I don't know therefore am not of much help.

The way I treated my lab's separation anxiety was to take him everywhere.

Healthy, isn't it?

I only wish I could. I've always wanted a job where I could take him with me, but alas that's not viewed as very professional!

And, I'm just not sure many of my clients would appreciate a nuerotic 70 lb dog jumping all over them while they're in my office.

While I don't actively advocate medicating dogs, you might want to talk to your vet about treatment...if you're dog is that high strung (and knowing labs I'm certain s/he is), you should talk to your vet about it.

Well let me say this................First glad the dog wasn't attached.

Second, as a signmaker I need to use strong stuff also. Go to your local hardware store they will have spools of rubber coated wire. It is rated and come 1/8th inch up to 1/4..........1/4 inch is rated for something unreal.......It really is.....Check it out they hace the rating on it and will also sell the clips and rings to make it what ever size you need.:)

I did say I did something stupid and yes he was attached at the time! He was never in danger of being "sucked" in as I caught the middle of the cable.

Thanks for the hardware suggestion, I never thought of that. I'll check it out at lunch tomorrow.

As for medicating him, I've thought about that, but I'm not sure I want him all doped up. He does have an appointment in a couple of weeks for his spring shots so I should make a point for some info. But he's six and gone this long without medication, I really hate to do it to him.

Opps....sorry missed that part......................

At the hardware store you will find what you need and having used this stuff for many thing the weakest thing will be where you create the loops at the end. They sell little clamps like a muffler clamps, I would put a few extra on the ends and maker real sure they are tight and you can get them,,,,,,,,,The more you add the safer it will be.
As a bdsm'er also we have used these stuff to hold a person up in the air , it will work and it great...Real strong.........

Pet shops want to much cash for this stuff.;)

ExLimey:

Wizard has the right idea, most of the cables you buy from pet suppliers are 3/16" aircraft cable anyway so the hardware store will be cheaper and you can make any length you need. If you decide to go the online pet supplier route, the link posted by LTR is a good one; I've used them many times.

As for separation anxiety in dogs, the meds shouldn't make him dopey. It may in fact be Prozac. Ask your vet when you go, even if meds don't make the dog perfect it may take the edge off his attempts to flee.

BTW, love the sig line. Almost used it myself a few times.

We've been two people short at work this week (out of 3) so I've been manning the fort so to speak and haven't been able to even take a lunch. In fact today I barely had time to scarf down my sandwich or go to the bathroom. Friday is month end and an appointment free day so I envision making up for lost time so to speak!

April 13 is "spring maintenance" time at the vet (heartworm, Lyme and Bordatella) so I'll be sure to ask about Prozac too.

Thanks guys.

PS - I've got another great sig line but can't get into CP to change it. I might post it someday, but not now.

I don't know where you live or what's available...but doggie day care was the best investment I ever made.

I only have to use it once a week, twice at most, but it averages to less than a dogwalker.

All day he plays and runs with dozens of other dogs and then, as he is right now, comes home and sleeps hard for hours.

My parents do that occassionally with their dog (out in So Cal). I, however, live in the middle of nowhere and people would consider me weirder than they already do if I somehow found some sort of daycare for my dog. I've not heard of anyplace like that around here. I guess that's something else I could ask the vet about.
