OMG did you see who is coming to Kline Stadium?! We HAVE to get tickets!!

Shelby woke up to the text on her phone, completely clueless as to who her fries, Monica was talking about. She quickly googled the stadium lineup. Jimmy Duncan. In one month. Her heart sped up as she quickly called Monica and hopped online to purchase tickets.

But her heart soon sank. SOLD OUT.

Unbelievable, she thought. Her favorite artist of all time was coming to her town... And she wouldn't get to see him.

*********

One Month Later

Caller number nine when you hear Jimmy Duncan's new song will win a pair of front tickets to the concert TONIGHT, at 7pm.

Shelby sat beside her radio, phone in hand, waiting impatiently. An hour later it came on. She dialed as fast as possible and the phone began to ring. A DJ came on the line and announced that she had indeed been caller nine. Shelby screamed in excitement and proceeded to give him her information.

Ten minutes later she was on her way to pick up her front row seat tickets to the most anticipated concert of the year... To see very girls dream man, Jimmy Duncan.

Jummy Duncan stood, getting ready for the set. It would be scheduled for a two hour concert, but instead, it'd probably go for closer to 4. Jim loved interacting with the crowd, and usually sang a few more songs than normal sets contained. He lived to perform though, and loved interacting with the fans, aside from all the groupies.

He had a few new songs he had been working on, and knew those would come into play as well. He usually played close to 24 songs, and a normal set took about 18 songs. He loved his work though, and never could stop at what was just the norm.

He heard that it was a sold out concert about a month before he was supposed to go on. He smiled, and knew that there were probably 10 more tickets that he had. He knew that the radio station in the city would host a giveaway. Somehow the station had wrangled him into giving them out.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"We're here at 98.5 KWWX, and we have the last pair, I repeat, last pair of tickets ready to be given away to the Jimmy Duncan concert that is this weekend. Caller number 9 gets them. Call now!" the DJ said. He flipped the mic off and Jimmy laughed.
He could already see the lines lighting up. The DJ flipped it back on after Jimmy selected the 9th caller.
"You're caller 9, congratulations!" the DJ said.
Jimmy heard the information being exchanged, and just remembered her name was Shelby. He knew that she would be down as soon as she could to pick them up. He went into the reception room to wait, along with a few other souvenirs for the lucky lady.
He heard a knock and then smiled. "Come on in, caller number 9!" he said, and then stood there, speechless. He was staring at the most beautiful girl in the world.
Shelby had hastily thrown on a pair of cut off denim shorts, and a white tank top before coming down to the station. The shorts were short, and the top clingy and revealing- paired with a pair of scuffed up boots and her long wavy hair down around her shoulders. It made for a stunning sight, but she wasn't even aware of it. She never realized how beautiful she was.
She walked into the station and knocked on the door for guests. A deep voice called her in and she entered expecting to see the local DJ. What she saw made her freeze in her steps, and her jaw drop.
In front of her was Jimmy Duncan. THE Jimmy Duncan. "Oh, my, Godl she said, her voice soft, tinged with a southern drawl, like a breath of fresh air on a hot summers day.
"I, uh... Oh. My. Gawddd".
She was smiling and still standing in the doorway, apparently speechless at the sight at him.
Jimmy shook his head, clearing the effects of her looks. "Well hello! So you're Shelby. These're your tickets," he said, holding them out. He smiled at her, and then moved next to her, guiding her into the room. He smiled as he stepped in front of the gifts he had brought. He had a few posters, shirts, and the coveted backstage passes.
"These're also for you," he said, spreading a hand and gesturing.
He knew that the passes would be a big deal. He didn't even give them to groupies. He only gave them to a select few, usually contest winners, or friends of friends who wanted to meet him. He waited, trying to let her adjust to all of this. "Are you okay?" he asked, his deep southern drawl coming out very pronounced.
Shelby was still in a form of shock at coming face to face with her favorite artist ever. And even better: he was more gorgeous in person. He guided her into the room and she took everything in. Before her was more than two tickets. There were all kinds of paraphernalia as well as two backstage passes.
"Those are mine?" She asked incredulously. His question shook her out of her stupor. "Wow" she said. "You must think I'm some kind of idiot" she laughed softly, a throaty, sensual laugh. "I can speak in literate sentences I swear. I'm just kind of stunned" she flashed him a bright smile.
"Those are really for me?" She asked again.
"That's awesome! You know I was so upset when tickets sold out so quickly... But now I'm thanking God they did".
She smiled again, still standing across from him, trying not to stare rudely but finding it incredibly hard not to.
Jimmy chuckled. "I was surprised the concert sold out as fast as it did. We were competing against a big pop star a city over, and then the big playoff game. So we were surprised that we sold out over 40000 seats. I'm happy that you got tickets though," he said softly.
He smiled again and shrugged. "It's okay. I understand. I was that way when I met George. A living legend, and I was stuttering around in awe. Just remember we put our pants on one leg at a time," he said with a smile that just kept getting bigger.
He looked at the time and then realized he had to head out. There were some last minute preparations to take care of, and as much as he wanted to stay, the concert took priority. "I'm sorry that I have to cut the day short for us, but I need to oversee some things for the concert. Stop by and say hi between sets though. We can resume where we left off," he said with a smile, before spontaneously pulling her in for a hug. "I hope you enjoy the show and passes," he said before heading out.
Shelby had to admit she was disappointed that Jimmy had to leave so soon, but she understood. He was an actual national country star. Every girl on America practically would love to be in her shoes at moment in time... Or maybe the next moment in time because what happened next shocked and thrilled Shelby.
He hugged her. He actually wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. It was an amazing feeling and over way too soon.
"Thanks, really" she managed to say. "I'll, uh, see you tonight".
She grabbed the things that were hers and headed back home, sort of in a daze to get ready for the concert. Monica met her there and couldn't believe Shelby's luck. She asked for every minute detail even though there wasn't too much to tell.
A few hours later they arrived at the venue, decked out to the nines in a similar outfit as Shelby had had on that morning except this time the shirt was a turquoise colored strapless one with gems all across the neckline and her boots where new, genuine leather, and she had a leather cowgirl hat adorned with gemstones on.
They were shown to their absolutely amazing front, dead center, seats and giggled like little school girls. Around their necks were the backstage passes. Working up their courage they headed to the back, flashing the passes to the guard, and watching in awe of the commotion going on back there.
Jimmy was in his element now. The sound check had gone wonderfully, and he could already hear the people outside the auditorium. He knew it was going to be a big crowd, full of fun and electricity. He was going over the last minute details with his band, fully trusting the electrical crew to make the lights look fantastic.
He looked up as his security walked in. "We have two ladies with backstage passes. Did you give them passes," Roland asked, smiling. He already knew the answer, but had to give Jimmy a tough time anyways.
Jim chuckled and nodded. "Yes I did. You already know that anyone who has a pass got it from me. They were the lucky winners of the last tickets, so I thought I'd make it extra special. They will get to hang out with us between sets, while the touring artists with us perform, and then will get to watch from the sidelines while we are on stage. Make sure they are left alone by the groupies though," he said to Roland.
Roland nodded, and then lead the two girls in. Jimmy smiled as he saw Shelby and her friend. They both looked amazing, but Shelby stood out. He moved to them and hugged each of them, lingering just a bit longer with Shelby.
"Welcome backstage to my show. You already know the guys. If not, there's Pete on drums, Leigh on the violin and fiddle, and then the bassist and back-up guitarist, Roy. Band, this is Shelby and her friend," he said. "They won the last two tickets, so I figured why not make the night a little more special for them. Don't give them too tough of a time," he said with a wink at the girls.
"Now then ladies. You can either sit back here and watch from the cameras, or you can watch from the side stage. Whichever you'd like to do, it's your preference. Whatever you see back here, food or drinks, feel free to partake in them. There are no drugs or alcohol back here though, so be warned, we don't party during the show," he said, trying to be stern, yet smiling profusely.
The security guard led them back amongst all of the people running back and forth. And suddenly there was Jimmy right in front of them. His face lit up in a smile when he saw her. Monica squeaked in excitement behind her and Shelby laughed under her breath.
Jimmy came over hugged them both. It was amazing to her how down to earth he was... But as he had said... He put his pants on one leg at a time like everyone else. He introduced them to his band, and Shelby introduced Monica to him and everyone else.
When Jimmy said they could watch from wherever they wanted, Shelby and Monica chose their seats. They had the best seats available and were not going to waste them by any means. They each grabbed a glass of water and stood back watching everything going on. They talked with the band and Jimmy.
Shelby couldn't take her eyes from him. His smile, his hair, the way he talked and teased... It all drew her to him like a magnet...her and every other girl on earth she was sure.
Her eyes connected with his and she smiled, an angelic smile that made men stop in their tracks, yet as always, she was unaware of that. Soon it was time for the show. Monica and Shelby said goodbye until later and headed to their seats... Shelby completely unaware of Jimmy's eyes tracking her as she left.
Jimmy shook his head as he watched the girls walk away. "Man, you got it bad," Ray said. He and Ray had grown up together, and were practically brothers. Jimmy just looked at him and nodded. Ray whistled and then shook his head. "Just be careful. You got a good thing going here, and she seems like a college kid. You're only 25, yet you are one of the most successful country artists of this generation. Just be smart," Ray said, before grabbing his guitar.
Jimmy nodded, knowing Ray meant well. Ray was 29, and always acted like his big brother, and Jimmy usually listened. He smiled as he strapped his guitar on, and then made his way out in front of the roaring crowd. "Well hello!" he said with a smile, hearing a roared hello back. "I wanna thank ya'll for bein here, and selling this joint out!" he hollered. His band clapped to show their thanks as well.
"Well now, I think we got a good show lined up for you, so lets get this shindig kicked off!" he said, launching into a lively song that was from his first album. He was happy that Shelby and Monica were dead center, because his eyes found Shelby often.
He took a few breaks throughout the first half of the show, and then looked out at the crowd. "Okay ya'll. We have a special guest touring with us tonight, so I want you to make some noise for this fiery redhead!" he said, stepping aside for a well known artist. He smiled as the roof seemed to break, and he went and sat in the back, cooling off.
"Whew, that crowd is hot tonight," Leigh said.
"Don't I know it. But I love it, because they are all into it. You could hear them belting every word to every song. That's what I love about our fans," Jimmy said, smiling.
He looked up as he saw the girl he was hoping to see enter the room. "How am I doing so far?" he asked, smiling through the sweat and damp clothing from the first half of the show.
Shelby and Monica couldn't believe how spectacular of a show Jimmy was putting on. Halfway through his first set, Monica shouted in her ear. "HE IS STARING AT YOU A LOT!"
Shelby rolled her eyes and smiled. "Just cause he's met me!" She shouted back. The next song was a lively one and she and Monica danced their hearts out, singing along to every single word. Shelby knew he wrote his own songs and it was incredible to her how well he did it. She knew every word of every song by heart.
When the set was over Monica asked if she wanted to go backstage and Shelby grinned. "Duh!" Together they headed back to the entrance to backstage. The security guard let them in no problem this time and they thanked him.
Jimmy was on a couch, kicked back and looking sexy as hell all sweaty. Shelby and Monica were sweaty themselves from dancing and singing along with him. Shelby grinned at him.
"You should hear them down there at their level. It's deafening" she said laughing. "You're doing awesome. Are all of your songs based on personal experience?"
She leaned back against a wall and crossed her tan legs at the ankle as she waited for his answer.
"Most of them are either from experiences that are either mine mine or my friends. I just had the words to write down," Jimmy said, smiling. He thought that Shelby looked really good all sweaty, and had seen her dancing to his music. He also knew that she knew every word, since she was singing along.
"Well, we are getting to the second set. This is going to be new stuff, so tell me what you think after we perform. No one else has heard it but this crowd, but it's where I grew up, so I figured that this is where the new album should start," Jimmy said.
He smiled and then hugged both girls, before pulling them out on stage. He introduced both of them, and then asked them a question about his album. "Well, you liked my old album, right ladies?"
When they agreed enthusiastically, he smiled and winked. "How would you all like to hear my new album?" The crowd went wild. Jimmy helped both girls to their seats, telling them thank you, before going back to perform. He interacted a lot more with the crowd this time, and they just ate it up.
When it was time to end, Jimmy thanked the crowd for being so amazing, and said that he knew it was best to come to his home town to start his new album. He thanked them again, told them to take care of each other and hoped God watched over them before walking off stage to cheers.
Shelby was mortified, yet ecstatic when Jimmy took she and Monica on stage. Lots of her friends were in the audience and hooted and hollered for them. Jimmy announced that he would be singing from his new album and the stadium erupted in cheers
Jimmy helped both girls down and then began again. The music he sang was by far his best yet. Apparently the crowd agreed because they were deafening with their cheers. All too soon, it was over. It had been the time of her life, and Shelby was sad it was over. For the last time they went backstage, where they once again found Jimmy.
Monica only stayed a few minutes but then had to leave to catch a ride with who she had rode there with. Shelby however had nowhere to be except home and she was in no hurry to leave backstage. She would stay for a while and then leave. She didn't want to be that annoying groupie girl that everyone hated.
Jimmy smiled as he got to talk to Shelby alone. He had wanted to just hang out with her and some friends since the end of the first act. He wasn't one to have a crazy after party. Instead, he just wanted to unwind and mellow out after that intense show.
He knew he was walking a fine line when he saw Shelby was wanting to hang around, but decided to do it anyways. "Hey, the band is going to hang out at my place to relax after the show. It's just going to be us and our significant others....well....the band and their significant others, and you if you'd like to come," he said, smiling sheepishly.
He was hoping she'd say yes, but wouldn't be surprised if she said no. He could tell she wasn't a groupie or anything, but just enjoyed being around him. He also saw she was a bit starstruck, but knew that it would fade as she got to know him if she decided to join him.
Shelby blinked in surprise and smiled slightly. She was standing next to Jimmy now and he towered over her. "You don't have to invite me, it's ok". She assumed he was just being generous by inviting her since the band all around them was talking about it.
Her pretty eyes connected with his and locked . Easyy girl she thought as her pulse sped up significantly. She had never wanted anything more than to not have to leave right then. She would have stated all night if he wanted her to. But that was impossible. He could have any girl, anywhere. What would he want with her?
Jimmy chuckled and then took her hand. "You're coming with us, so stop being polite, or humble, or shy, or whatever. I wouldn't have asked you if I didn't want you to come with us," he said. Ray tapped her on the shoulder and nodded, adding, "He's serious. The only other time he invited someone was his little sister. She comes to these shows when we are in her college town, but otherwise, he doesn't invite anyone."
Jimmy chuckled and shouldered Ray a bit. "Knock it off. Okay Shelby. You ready to go?" he asked. He didn't really wait for an answer, instead walking to the SUVs that were waiting for the band. He opened the door for her, and then guided her into the spacious back seat, while Ray and his wife took the seat in front of them.
Jimmy smiled and then leaned over, his lips almost against her ear, whispering, "Relax and enjoy yourself. We are all just normal people. The only thing is that we happen to be musicians who have had a bit of success. We are just like you, and like to relax and hang out with friends. So relax and enjoy the group," he said, moving an arm around her shoulder to help her relax and feel a little more wanted than she seemed to think she was.
Shelby smiled when Rob pointed out that jimmy rarely invited anyone back after the show. She enjoyed their camaraderie. It was obvious they were great friends and se liked to see that.
"Um, ok if you say so," Shelby answered as she followed along after Jimmy an his friends. Her heart was beating so fast she was afraid it would beat from her chest. If he rarely asked women back with him then why was he asking her? She truly didn't understand but just decided to go with the flow.
They walked out back to where the bands SUVs were parked, and Shelby could see hundreds of cars still lined up waiting to exit before Jimmy helped her inside of the big truck. Once inside he sat close to her and after a few seconds he leaned close to whisper in her ear.
Relax and enjoy the group.
Shelby took a deep breath and smiled up at him confidently. What was she doing anyway? She wasn't shy. And they were just people he was right. Then Jimmy laid his arm across her shoulders and she nearly had a seizure or something. Somehow she managed to keep still but it was incredibly difficult. JIMMY DUNCAN had his arm around her.
She glanced curiously up at him but didn't voice the question racing through her mind. WHY?
Instead she focused on the conversation flowing up front between Ray and his wife. They laughed with each other, teasing and joking. Shelby smiled. They seemed like a lovely couple.
"So where, exactly, are we going again? Your place like somewhere you own, or a hotel?"
"My ranch, actually. I grew up on a ranch, and ended up buying one just like it. I've turned it into a recording studio, among other things, with a corral for horses, and a large ATV and dirtbike trail. I like to be outdoors," Jimmy said with a smile.
He wanted Shelby to relax, so started to draw her into the conversation. "So what did you think. And be honest, because there are a lot of people who would just say that we were great to please us. We don't get better that way," Jimmy said, smiling.
Ray turned around, and nodded. "It'll also be nice to hear about the new stuff. Jim sat and wrote that probably two weeks ago. It took hims two days to write it all, and another three for us to memorize it fully. We are thinking about the next album, so your input would help," he said. Ray's wife smiled and nodded.
Jimmy smiled, squeezed her shoulders gently and waited. He knew she'd be honest with him. Somehow, it just seemed like that was the type of person she was. She wouldn't bullshit him to please him, but would give him her honest opinion.
Shelby was extremely excited to hear they were going to his ranch and some little hotel. Somehow that seemed a lot more fun although she would go anywhere with him she was sure of it.
Eventually they all asked her opinion on the new music. She thought about it for a minute and smiled at them. "It was all really really good. One thing Monica and installed about though was that one of those songs, the beat was a bit faster than we pictured with the words... The one about the couple who wants to be together but can't?"
"But then words and melody were amazing. It gave me goosebumps."
She found herself leaning into the soft embrace of his muscles arm around her shoulder. It felt too good to resist although she still was completely confused as to what was going on.
Jimmy smiled and looked at Ray. "I told you!" He said, pointing a finger.
Ray leaned back and smiled. "Sorry. We just needed a bit of pace to the album, instead of it being slow ballads," he said, defending himself.
Jimmy smiled and nodded. He had been thinking about writing some upbeat tunes, to keep the album from having a one track feel. He already had some stuff floating around, but just needed to get it down on paper. He could do that later when he was free.
He wrapped his arm a little more tightly around Shelby when he felt her moving into the embrace. He smiled and leaned down, before whispering, "Thank you for that." and kissing her softly right below the ear.
Shelby absolutely froze when Jimmy kissed her below the ear and pulled her closer to him. The feeling was electrifying but she felt she needed to lay some things out on the table.
"Look... I ...uh don't know what your plans are" she whispered very low so they couldn't hear up front. "But I'm not looking to be anyone's notch on a bedpost..." She looked away.
Had she just made the biggest mistake of her life by basically denying Jimmy Duncan sex??
"I'm sorry if I gave off that impression..."
Jimmy smiled and nodded. "I wouldn't want you to be a notch on my bedpost. Surprisingly, it only has one, and that was a long time ago. I wasn't thinking of sex, just hanging out," he said softly. Sex was the furthest thing from his mind.
He smiled as the pulled up to the gate, and then got out. He looked around and then keyed in the passcode, before watching the gate slowly open. they drove through, and the gate closed.
"Sorry, we have some horses that were rescued, so they need to be kept safe from their old owners," he said as they drove up to the house. When they parked, he opened the door for Shelby and then smiled. "Welcome to my house!" he said.
Shelby wasn't sure if he meant the no sex thing or not. Only one girl? Now THAT was hard to believe. A gorgeous star like him!? Shelby was intrigued by him. She watched as he got out of the truck and punched in an access code to open the gate.
Everything about him exuded de appeal from his appearance to his deep voice to the way he carried himself.
As he got back in Shelby smiled at him slowly. She got a glance out the window of several barns and stables as well as a large house that they pulled up to. Jimmy let her and his band mates in, welcoming them, especially her.
The decorating was gorgeous, done in neutral tones with soft leathers and beautiful woods everywhere. She instantly fell in love with it.
"It's absolutely gorgeous" she told Jimmy. "I love it. I'd love to see the horses tonight at some point also" she told him hopefully.
Jimmy nodded and then took her hand. "We can even go for a ride tonight. The groom usually has two saddles ready to go, and we can get horses up if you'd like," he said, smiling softly and walking towards the stable. He loved riding, as it helped him relax and think.
As they walked to the stables, he smiled and looked at her. "So, what are your thoughts so far?" he asked, wondering if she liked his place. He hadn't run into anyone who hated it, but a few people said they'd do it differently.
He loved it. Everything was up-to-date, and he never wanted for anything. He had the basement extended almost three times his house's side. He was happy with the gym, the recording studio, the movie theatre, and everything else he had set up. It was his retreat, his sanctuary, when life became too much.
Shelby's grin was a mile wide when Jimmy asked her to go horseback riding with him. She loved riding, and couldn't think of anything better to do with him than explore his land on horseback.
As they approached the stable she began to hear the distinct sounds of several horses shuffling around in their stalls. Hooves scraped the floors, snorts and snuffles came from several of the doors, and as they entered the building several nickered, calling out to Jimmy.
Shelby walked over to a beautiful buckskin gelding standing behind one of the gates and reached her hand slowly inside to stroke his forelock and face. As she did she glanced around at all of the horses staring at them and then back at Jimmy.
She smiled at him. "This is great" she said, approaching him again. As she walked up her shoulder brushed his lightly. "Who can we ride?"
