I grew up with the black community in Miami. More to the point after I got out of the service I went to college on the GI bill. Quite a few of the black brothers that served in Viet Nam were doing the same. They were still stuck in Liberty City (the Miami equivalent of Watts) at the time, but the bond of having been there and done that was stronger than superficial shit like skin color. We were all part of a club we formed at University, ironically called The Veterans Club. We had a roving party every weekend, from high rises on the beach, to the burbs, to the heart of Liberty City. No one worried, no one cared. How could you fear any American neighborhood after Viet Nam?

The black community used the word 'nigger' quite freely. It had a multitude of meanings depending on subject and the the tone. Kinda like the word 'asshole' or 'bitch.' Just another adjective. There was the good natured, "damn it nigger!!" Like calling someone that had just played a practicle joke on you an asshole with a smile on your face.

Then there was the, "He's a nigger." epithat. Usually used in reference to someone that was a 'shucker and jiver.' A bullshitter.

Then there was the serious, "You fucking nigger." line. That one was pretty serious, a one on one encounter and unless someone pissed their pants lead to a fight.

You go down to the block and you still here the word used in the black community. It's just not used as freely when there's a honky in hearing distance. But if you sit quietly and not appear to be paying attention it's still used and almost as freely.

But it's perception has morphed over the years. It has once more been assigned to the realm of the southern bigot. A regression of meaning as opposed to an evolution. So it goes. I just have no compulsion to regress that far.

LT falls more into the second categorical use of the word. And he seems to be consumed with race. He never misses an opportunity to interject it into the conversation. It's as much a club that he uses to silence the opposition as his name calling or his compulsive, "I win." declarations.

I'm waiting for the day he declares himself to be a black, jewish, trans-sexual, blind, bi-sexual, paraplegic so he can cry 'discrimination' no matter what the subject or who the speaker.

As for her comment about what He would call LT, I'd have to agree with her assessment of what he would say based on my knowledge of him. His definition is along the lines of "Black people that make all black people look bad." She didn't condone his calling anyone a "nigger" (she actually told him that it was a racist comment, but LT left that part of the statement out of his "quotes") and neither do I, but that is what he would call LT based on behaviors shown constantly.
