Those unbelievable scores again:

'A Beautiful Mind' - 8 Oscar nominations

'The Shipping News' - Zero Oscar nominations

What the hell is that all about? Okay, so it's about a guy with an affliction, but 'A Beautiful Mind' is a truly average movie! Sure, Russell isn't bad, but Kevin Spacey has him licked. The Shipping News was one of the finest films I've ever seen - beautifully made, wonderfully acted and exquisitely written. Everything I'd want in a movie, and it left me feeling generally great about life.

'A Beautiful Mind' was fine, but I'd never want to see it again. It didn't really make me think about anything once I'd left the cinema.

I hope, since the Shipping News was scandalously missed out in the nominations that the superlative 'Gosford Park' and the impressive 'Lord of the Rings' kick 'Beautiful Mind's ass.

What does everyone else think?

p.s. everyone go and see 'The Shipping News' if you haven't seen it yet. Trust me.

last year i'd seen every film up for best picture except chocolat... now i've only seen lord of the rings

*sigh*

Spacey beats Crowe hands down any time...and yes gladiator is one of of my favourite films ever...LA confidential was cool too.

Spacey is a proper actor... he does theatre and supports the Old Vic.... Big up Kaiser Soze (sp.)

I LOVED a Beautiful Mind. I thought Russell Crowe was beyond brilliant. The Oscar is his.:)

LOTR was stunning!!! Saw it twice, but I was hooked on the books since I could read so the anticipation was there.

Kevin Spacey is a terrific actor also, (perfection in Usual Suspects) and I haven't seen the Shipping News, although I did hear great reviews.

The Oscars always leave someone well deserving out of the race.
