"On the Job" Story Event 2022

I just missed the deadline, thought the day's difference between Australia and America would be enough to get my story 'Perving on the Pretty Nanny' posted, but wasn't the case. Oh well, I'll have to make sure I make the time frame for the Geek Pride story.

I look forward to reading your story all the same, Retro! Will you still post it?

Yes, it's in pending at the moment. Hopefully it will get approved soon, and maybe if there are a couple of other stragglers they might get added to the list.

I've had something strange happen. I was a bit too late to submit my story - my own fault - thinking that as Australia is nearly a day ahead of America that I would have more time, which I didn't.

Anyway, five days later my story is still stuck in pending. Could the 'OnTheJob2022' reference be causing an issue, or could there be a backlog of stories to clear? Should I go in and edit and remove the On the Job reference from Author's notes and resubmit?

Send Laurel a PM. My last chapter got stuck in Pending for some reason involving tags not quite matching - she sorted it.

One of my chapters is going down very well, one has enough votes to be considered for a monthly contest. Obviously not the same...

And as further evidence that most readers don't care about series, Ch.5 has twice the views of Ch.4...

I see the On the Job announcement has been pulled from the homepage and the Stories and Pics page after just a few days. I wish the challenge lists would stay up a little longer for more exposure.

I have the same issue. I thought the closing date was the April 25th. I put it in a day late with the 'On The Job Challenge' reference. Now it's still pending. Not sure what's happening with it. I just hope it doesn't get rejected for some reason.

I found it through the link that Kumquatqueen posted above, so it exists. I'm not sure if it's accessible by just opening the site and going in "cold." But, yes, it should stay wherever it was for a longer period of time.

Yeah, that thing disappeared, I looked all over for it and could only find 2021
:cautious:

Follow the link I posted and you'll find it. It should be easier, however - the management of this site should be more careful.

Thank you. I know that the front page is a bit disorganized (which has always been a bone of contention to this old dog) but on the job doesn't appear anywhere on the front page, how does the average reader find out it even exists? I can see Mickey Spilane, Geek Pride, April Fools, to be honest I'm having a hard time finding anything about contests, why isn't there an updated page that lists the contests that the average reader can hit with one click off the front page? So far the only thing easily visible to the average reader is April Fools 2022

Maybe I'm taking this too seriously because it's my first event but I don't remember it being this hard to find contest and event entries.

Yes, it could be better. The opening page has a link to "Author Organized Challenges," and it's not listed there but the link does lead to it. That opening page looks ancient. They are moving forward with beta-testing on the new story hubs ("mobile-friendly") but that has been going on for a while now. At least they haven't tried to change everything overnight as one other site did last year. It took them weeks, months even, to get that straightened out.

The "On the Job" exercise isn't a Web site-sponsored contest. There are a lot of user-sponsored exercises going on now. There's a limited amount of support the overstretched Web site can put to them. They shouldn't, I believe, expect to get the same support and exposure that the Web site's own sponsored contests are given.

I agree these events/challenges shouldn’t get the same support as the official contests, but leaving a blue highlighted heading up for a couple of weeks shouldn’t be that difficult. They still have the announcement about the quarantine stories on the homepage and that was over a year ago.

That having been said, Laurel and Manu (and anyone else on their team) do a great job keeping this site up and running. Do they ever take vacations?

I went back in this morning, removed the 'On the Job' references and resubmitted. It will now go one of two ways, maybe it will fix the problem and it will go up in a couple of days, or I have pushed the story to the back of a very long queue of pending stories awaiting publication .....

I once said, in a tongue-in-cheek kind of way, that Laurel and Manu may be like Miss Lonelyhearts in Nathanael West's novel of the same name. They actually died or quit years ago and were replaced by other people using the same names.

This must have worked, because 'Perving on the Pretty Nanny' has now been approved and is set to go up tomorrow.

Weirdest thing happened. I submitted my story late on April 25th, with a note to the editor that it was for the On the Job Challenge. Normally, in the past, it only takes a few days to be published when it's for a contest or challenge. When a week went by, I submitted an edited version, taking the reference to the challenge off of the top thinking that might have been holding it up. Another four days went by, and it finally got published, and was even put in with the other stories for the challenge on May 7th. Really strange. At least it got published, though it took almost two weeks.

I don't know what's going on here, I submitted an edited version of a story that needed some correction on May 4th, it's STILL sitting in pending. I've reached out to several people, no response.
