On the Issue of Gay Marriages

It bemuses when my conservative acquaintances and friends say that marriage is an institution that must not change and cannot evolve.

It has changed and it is evolving. It changed when it was no longer considered OK for a man to beat his wife. It changed when it was no longer legal. It changed when a woman could get credit in her own name. It changed when a woman could legally opt out of the marriage when it wasn't working. It changed when a woman could legally keep her name.

As for things threatening a marriage, it faces its worst threats from within, which everybody ought to know.

They would apply here in Oregon. All marriages from other states are recognized here.

By now I am sure most of you know of Oregons measure 36. It is a measure to ammend our State Constitution to read marriage is between a man and a woman. The Christian Collition took up a crusade to collect signitures for this to go on the election ballot. I am not even going to get into the reasons they want this and the agruments for why they want you to vote yes on this measure. Guru has done that over at the GB. The main reason is because GOD says marriage is between a man and woman.

If this is the basis of there argument (president, bible thumpers, etc...) and they want to bring the church into it, then the church's need to start paying taxes.

What about those of us who do not believe in the Christian God and can not practice are religous beliefs because these laws are being made?

I know this is a rant so disregard any rambling you do not understand. it is late.

What I don't understand is how Christians have become so fixated on the anti-gay thing. It's almost as though they can't think of anything else. It's not even one of the central issues in the Bible - just one of the fringe concerns, situated just a couple of lines after it insists that a woman should kill two doves every time she's on her period.

Rock Hudson. They felt so betrayed. How could he do that to Doris Day?

Oh, that's easy. They're not Christian. One of the first clues is they make such a big deal about how Christian they are, which isn't very Christian. Runs counter to humility and going to one's closet to pray and all that.

*waits for someone to make a gay/Christian closet joke*

LMAO @ Stuponfucious :)

I can't help but feel that if Christians were a little more Christian, they'd be encouraging people to be gay. After all, if we keep going forth and multiplying, isn't it going to bring more suffering to the poorer countries who can't afford resources? Just a thought

;)

It's the Judaic past, reaching forward. After all, the whole Judeo-Christian system had its origins in an up-and-coming set of tribes that were trying to establish themselves, and every gay person represented someone who was not producing sons* for the good of the kingdom.

* and daughters, of course--but how many mothers got mentioned in the begats? Damn few!
