Ok....this is getting ridiculous.

First, I'm scheduled to have surgery on my knee. I go in for my pre-op appt. 4 days prior to the scheduled surgery date only to be told that my surgeon had been deployed and they'd call me to let me know what was going to be done about his patients.

That was about 3 weeks ago. They rescheduled me to have the surgery on 3/31.

I went in today for my new pre-op appt. The new surgeon examined me and looked at my MRI, and determined that the problem isn't so bad as to require surgery. In fact, I really wouldn't be helped much at all by the procedure. But do I really need the surgery or not. Probably not, but why did the first doctor say I did? It's military docs, so it isn't a financial thing. Grrrr.....

This is so frustrating. I'm glad that I'm not having to have the surgery, but dang...all this time I've been sitting around, not getting any exercise because I was afraid I'd be making my knee worse. I've put on almost 10 pounds just in the past few months because of this.

So, now I get to start loading up on the Motrin and getting off my lazy ass and start moving around. I could have been doing this all along.

Guess I'll go check out the water aerobics class tomorrow morning. I'd rather be sitting here, but......gotta get the old blood moving and the metabolism perking.

*sigh*

End of rant.

Well in truth not much I can say really except hope your better soon

ROFL! Ah...thanks. The rant worked just fine....but the chest...another matter entirely. Old and droopy. lol!

Blue,
Sorry to hear about your knees, maybe you should get a third opinion.
Best insult Ive heard in a while is an oldy but a goody"if brevity is the soul of wit your penis must be a riot"

Thanks, Islander. I'm thinking about it, actually, but since it is military, I'll probably have to pay big bucks to go to a civilian doc, and the MRI pics are property of the Army...don't know if they'd lend 'em out for that purpose, or not. I need to check into this. But part of me says, oh hell...just forget it and move on. *shrugs*. Thanks, though.

no, don't just forget it and move on. get a third opinion, please.

it might need surgery or exercise could make it worse.

Hun...

Do you know exactly what the problem was? I had surgery on my knee because my kneecap sits "on an interesting angle" to quote the dr. He said he could partially fix it with soft tissue surgery but would have to reconstruct bone to fix it all the way (which they couldn't do because I was too young.)

So, he did the soft tissue surgery, screwed up somehow, because there was way more pain and swelling than he expected. He took an attitude of "well, it shouldn't hurt that way." (Well, it does, asshole, what are you going to do about it?) He said there was about an 80% correction. He's full of shit. My knee still hurts and goes out of place all the time.

Get another opinion, but don't let them do surgery unless you're sure it would help. It was an awful experience for me, weeks more of recovery than expected.

On the other hand, if it's something like torn cartilige, that's just orthoscopic, you'll be walking again in a few days. (That was my other knee.) *grin*

Sorry, I had to rant on this too. I hate doctors.

Cat, thanks for sharing your story.

The problem with my knee is: torn meniscus, kneecap off to the side a bit, and arthritis. The torn meniscus is what the first doctor was going to repair. But the new doctor said that it isn't bad enough to need surgery, and that a lot of my problem is just wear-and-tear on the cartilage because of age (I'm only 42!) and weight (very overweight). He also said that my symptoms, that are bothing me the most, are from the kneecap problem and there is no surgery to fix that. Glad he didn't suggest the surgery your doc did!

I'm really sorry that you got screwed like that.

I don't know if you read the whole thread or not (not that it is a long one! lol), but the 2nd doc wasn't 2nd opinio0n; the first surgeon got deployed (military doctors and hospital) so I was reassigned to this other doctors caseload).

Still thinking about going for another doctors opinion, just in case. Wonder which of the first 2 the 3rd would agree with. lol

Well, don't let them tell you that your weight is your only problem. They love to do that. I'm also overweight and have arthritis, and before they figured out what was wrong with me (which took over 6 months) the dr told me if I would just lose 20 pounds I wouldn't have any problems. So, I did... and my knee was still messed up.

Water activities, however, are the least stressful thing for your joints. You can get in the pool and practically exercise to your heart's content and it's not even as bad as the normal walking you do. Just listen to your body - if your knee hurts, take a break. (Duh. :) )

Have they put you in physical therepy at all? Tedious as it is, it can help.

Good luck sweetie.

P.S. I can relate to the "being too young" thing... I'm only 18. *grin*

18. Gosh....I don't know that I can even remember being 18! lol

Well, I wish I only had 20 lbs. to lose. I need to lose a minimum of 100 (seriously), so my weight definitely is a factor.

I'm going to start water aerobics on Monday. And do the exercises the physical therapist gave me. Yuck. lol

Hehe. I have more than 20 to go, but the dr couldn't very well say "I'd like to see you lose 100 pounds before your next visit" unless he was writing a script for liposuction lol. Plus all my meds I'm on for my chronic stuff screw with my weight. Yay!

Blue, get a second opinion immediately. They can to fix a kneecap that is off track. that i know for a fact because i had my right one done. they can also correct the torn menicus and there are things called lasers that will burn the arithritis off. i have first hand knowledge of all three and the scars on my leg to prove it. it has absolutely nothing to do with your weight, he just is not the regular ortho and doesn't want to do it.

fight with them on this one honey, please. you need the structural problems corrected or nothing is going to get better.

Wow native. Sounds like you practically got new knees. I thought I wouldn't get that unless I got mine replaced, which won't happen for a good amount of time yet because I'm too young and would have to have them replaced again too many times over my life time. That's really amazing. You have no pain or anything now?

i wish that i had a new knee, i still have pain, and i will for the rest of my life. but there are things that can be done about that too. i, too, am still considered too young to get the new knee but i am making the best of it and do things to help the knee and the body cope with the pain.

but the knee doesn't sit me on my butt at least ten times a day and i do walk, have recently started to run again and i kickbox three times a week and have a very regimented workout schedule.

just hang in and the trick to it all is finding a good orthro that will listen and not accept the standard "if you just lose some weight then it will get better". you can lose hundreds of pounds and if there is something structurally wrong with a joint i can guarantee you that it will not get better.
