Mentioned in another thread, I had a new story come online this morning. It was up for two or three hours, collecting two 5s and a one-bomb. Then another one-bomb. It is evident to me that my mistake was the description, alluding to wives/girlfriends going out to paint the town red without their partners. This type of thing apparently is an automatic trigger for the incel crowd, where they scroll through to the end based on the title/description alone to bomb it.
It is a good story, and a lot of fun, even getting my wife's seal of approval. What has me upset is that this out-of-control one-bombing torpedoes the score before most readers have even started their day. I know that in my reading I avoid stories much under 4 ('cept in LW), since I've run into some pretty crummy writing at that level. I expect most readers use similar criteria in picking stories.
I suspect - but don't know - that whatever process is used to neutralize the one-bombs has to have enough statistical weight to determine what are or are not outliers. In low traffic areas like GS, it's hard to make it to that level, so the one-bombs have greater influence than they should.
IMO, an improvement needs to be made in this area. Maybe something akin to the ratings system on yelp.com - if you have accumulated a reputation of one-star reviews for everything, your ratings count less, or don't count at all. That needs to happen here.
My two cents. Excuse me while I get a glass of chocolate milk to soothe my bruised ego.
