Over the last week or so, my computer has really gotten a lot slower. I have a cable modem, so I know my connection is not really the issue. Does anyone have suggestions as to why this is or what I can do to fix it? Thanks in advance and excuse the ignorance, LOL!

Siren is starting a Class Action suit for slow computer users I think.

Or is that users of slow computers?

Damn syntax!

How much memory on board? And how many programs open at once? Operating system? Need this info to take a good guess.

Check your system for spyware with something like Spybot or ad-aware.

Defrag your hard-drive -- make sure youdelte your temporary internet files and temp files first, becuase there's no point in defragging them (they change too often and get fragmented to fast to be worth the time to defrag them.)

Check what programs are running in the background that you don't really need -- DrWatson can help here; check your help file for instruction on using DrWatson.

With a Cable Modem, the number of other users on the same cable branch can affect how fast your sytem works. If he slowdown is only with respect to online content, your connection could be the problem, but there isn't anything you can do about it except change the connection to a DSL or other broadband service.

Yep!

Defraging can help.

Cleaning out your temporary internet files every few days will help.

Registry cleaner is a nice tool I found at ZDnet.

The poor pc just might be huffing and puffing with over work?

:D

Thanks everyone who answered. Now, my next question is why can't I defrag my hard drive? I start the defrag, it goes up to 2 or 3% then back to zero and never gets anywhere. Any ideas?

are you doing any work on it? Sometimes you have to close out all other windows and programs and let it do its stuff. I memory changes it then wants to start over...

...i think

you probaly have a prgramme running in the the back ground - even though you dont know it - such as an active screen saver or destop which can stop you defragging -

Go into safe mode at start up and then try it

Also from time to time cable/dsl connections can/do have problems which slow them down temporarily.

Edited because I can't type this morning!

Booting in Safe Mode (hold down the control key when you restart the computer to get the boot menu) will remove everything that might be writing to the disk during defrag -- EXCEPT DEFRAG ITSELF.

The restart problem is common with defragging drive C: bcause defrag updates its log file and then restarts because the disk dta has changed. It's more noticeable on badly fragmented drives, because it doesn't get very far into the defragging process each time. However, it will defrag a bit more of th drive each time it restarts and eventually will finish the process as long as you've stopped any other processes that are writing to the disk.

Change the screen saver to NONE, also check to make sure the hard drive(s) are not set to turn off after a specified amount of time.

When your running defrag, just leave it be and don't run any other programs..............make sure NOTHING else is running (i.e. Outlook, Excel, Word, Games, etc.......) while it is defragging.

It sounds like your experiencing "slowdown" on the cable modem. Delete all your temp files, etc.........shut down your computer and unplug the cable modem from the power source. Leave it off for a few minutes, then plug it back in the wall (to the power) and restart your computer. See if you notice a difference (better or worse ~ should be a little better)..........if you don't notice a difference, call your provider and tell them your experiencing slowdown and they can probably walk you thru doing a few things to try and figure out what's going on.

Sometimes as more people are added to the "net" your on with Cable modems, the proper "punch" isn't there that used to be there when it was just you. The cable people need to be made aware of your slowdown so they can upgrade/add to your local "net".

I am assuming also that your talking about the Internet downloading things has gotten slower and NOT your computer has gotten slower?

I am not the most versed in how to explain it to others, but it appears as though your experiencing cable modem "lag".....welcome to the wonderful world of Broadband internet access..........every once in a while a little fine tuning is needed by the provider to insure proper bandwidth.

okay

so, i used to have a cable modem, too <sob>

My service suddenly got super slow and I thought it was because more people were using them, so I called the company. Nope, they said, that's not the problem. The *modem* was the problem.

Apparently Cable Modems are only good for so long (and here I thought they were immortal, like me) After a couple of years, they need replaced. Since my modem actually belonged to my provider, they just exchanged it, and WHOOM my service was cool again!

Not true, I have had the same cable modem for the last 3 years and not had one bit of problem. That is of course unless they changed "protocol" or the type signal they were sending to yours, in which case you would need to switch to a different cable modem, though that is rarely the case.

Cable modems do go bad, some may last a month ~ some 10 years, but there is not a specified time that they do. They are just like anything else, they can break and fail at any given time.

i'm not going to get further into this, but it *is* true - maybe it's longer than 2 years but I don't know - that's just how long I had mine. The company owned mine, so maybe they'd been using it for longer.
