Margonelli examines the oil market, beginning with the gas station and ending with the national policies of countries like China. She spends time at the QUICKIE MART, rides with the tank truck driver, visits the refinery and oil well and commodity market in NYC. She travels to Venezuela, Chad, Iran, and China. She tours the Strategic Petroleum Reserve where America stores 700 Million barrels of oil in salt caves.
Oil is expensive to harvest. A simple derrick in Texas costs 70K per day to operate. Security doesnt get counted in the price of gasoline, but adds $5 to every gallon of gas you buy. The US military provides the lion's share of the security.
Despots like Hugo Chavez give America the finger, but in the end are forced to sell oil to America because America controls the techincal expertise, the oil extraction tools, the commodity market, and the World Bank. Fuck with EXXON and your money from everywhere comes to a halt. So Chavez cusses America in public and signs contracts with America at night.
Much of the money America pays for foreign oil goes to pay soldiers to guard the derricks and pipelines from terrorists.
