Oh Que!

 What did you have?

umm let me think...There were just the 4 of us.

started with a cup of tea - I don't know what it was made from. but it was ..interesting...

a steamer of 4 shrimp dumplings.
a steamer of 4 soup dumplings.

a plate of sweet and sour fish pieces.
a plate of rice noodles and beef.
a plate of beef and peppers and onions.

a big pot of rice congee...with shellfish - I didn't know they were lurking on the bottom. And I would have been happy with this instead of all the rest; it was delicious.

Bill: 270 rmb (about $50)

then we went to a Dairy Queen for icecream cones.

What makes 'a good old Wisconsin fish fry'?

Wisconsinites claim their Friday fish fries are unique. Just broiled fish, french fries, cole slaw, bread. It's popular throughout the state, for as long as I can remember. Maybe it has something to do with the state's Catholic past. Or we're just easy to please. Oh-- and beer-- although I had three Irish coffees (coffee with Irish whiskey.)

Wouldnt that be a fish-broil?

Not necessarily healthy: broiled, fried, usually with some sort of breading. Very good tasting. We have "fish boils" but usually closer to Lake Michigan, tourist places like Door Co. Fish boiled with potatoes and onions.

It's definitely a Catholic thing. Mostly people order the deep fried. I never knew it was so regional until I lived in Pennsylvania and wanted to hit an all you can eat fish fry on a Friday night.....boy was I in for a rude awakening!

Yes! All you can eat. Which I try to avoid. Of course, Milwaukeeans claim the only real fish fries are in the Milwaukee area. I have my favorites. But I've found a few up north. I forgot to mention potato pancakes. Good fish fry places offer those, too.

Chinese New Year eve today/tonight.

Lunch with the (new) family today.
Too much baijyo - ugh...my head is thumping right now.

The goddamn gated community muzak on rotation all day and the fireworks are NOT helping.

Streets are deserted except for a folks walking around. Shops are closed. And I needed to go out for cigarettes! ONE shop open!

Went out for a good old Wisconsin fish fry tonight. Pizza tomorrow! I could use a sauce recipe (anyone?) My homemade pizzas are getting a little tired.

One large can crushed tomaroes. One tiny can tomato paste to thicken and sweeten 1/2 onion, fine diced.2-3 cloves crushed garlc. Saute the onion and garlic slow and low in more olive oil than you need normally for that. Lots of basil. A lesser anount of oragno. Sugar and salt to taste. Dash or more of Louisiana hot sauce.

I will try that! Thanks, Que.

My old passion-- one of the things I love most in life is cross country skiing. I haven't been able to ski at all, or very well, since having hip surgery two years ago. I've finally gotten my flexibility and finesse back and I've been skiing as of old these past two days-- albeit, I'm not a very great shape anymore. But that will improve with time. A mile seems more like four. Once more around the golf course today, then tomorrow into the forest to try the big hills.

Where's Ellw?

Interesting weekend I have had.

Boss is out of town. I have his children. Saturday I took them to their basketball hames. OMG so much fun! I loved watching some day seeing the blossoming of talent. Then their grandparents took them to the youngest boys soccer game so I could go help his boy scout troop set up for today's chili feed. After that I hit the grocery store and picked up ingredients to make 75 corn bread muffins. I hate corn bread and have never made them before....I tried one. It tasted just as shitty as the last one I tried so I guess they were good. I then made three pans of cookie bars as well. Fast forward to a surprise knock on the door and my lonely night became amazing. •happy content sigh• today was the boy scout chili feed and the kids and I had fun. We are watching the bowl now and I am still smiling happily.

I'm glad you've been able to rekindle your old passion. Someone very dear to me has cross country skiing in his blood, too. Perhaps I'll even try myself one day.

Glad to hear that there is so much right in your world lately. :)

There was some GB drama, and Elle no longer posts here. As gypsy mentioned, she's mostly over on the BSDM board. I miss her.

Cornbread is ok, but its best if not too sweet. The type of cornmeak matters and I wouldn't know how to differentiate, other than trual and error.. Best with strips of green chilli and cheese baked into the middle of it.

I don't use canned tomatoes. I get a big bag of fresh fairly ripe ones. It's a bit time consuming but I put crosses with a sharp knife on the bottom of each one, then pour in boiling water into a big bowl. The cuts make it easier to peel the skin off with the help of the boiling water.

Chop each one into 4 quarters, scoop out the flesh with the seeds (too much liquid) and keep the pulp.
Crush and chop garlic (4-5 cloves). Chop onions roughly.
Fry the onions and garlic, then add the tomato pulp. I add oregano and basil, salt and pepper. Boil it up stirring often.
Turn the heat down and simmer for about 1/2 an hour.
It will get a frothy scum, but stirring makes it disappear.

Let cool, then bottle in sterilised bottles. I usually get a couple of large jars from a few kilos of tomatoes. Keeps in fridge for a couple of months.

I think I'm gonna get my hair cut.....short and sassy to match the new violet hue...
