His intent was to point to the fact that media has gone PC-crazy in Canada too. In that any statistics that would potentially point (in the reporters' mind) towards a minority group, are being withheld from the public.

This particular situation wasn't the best one for him to illustrate his point imo. But he Wasn't motivated by racism.

Moreover, while I do agree that many minority groups Are discriminated worldwide (and I'm part of that category too, as I have encountered a couple of xenophobic attitudes in my remote past) , the over-the top PCnness and lack of transparency can sometimes make matters even worse for them. It can annoy people, and it gives plenty of ammunition to the Real R-wingers.

Although -I hate to admit- I made a similar mistake in the case of the Paris shootings.
