When I go into conversation with someone I will show that I am offline. It is out of respect for the person that is taking the time to talk to me. I owe them my undivided attention. But if they don't have the same respect for me and they are carrying on multiple coversations and I have to sit for 10 minutes for them to get around to me, I will just bow out of the conversation and it is tuff to ever get me again. Just my feeling on the suject.:D
 
I tend to be a bit selective when I sign in on messegers. There are some who want to dominate my time so I stay invisible to them, but if there is someone online I wish to talk too I usually remove the 'invisible' to them so they know I am there.

I chuckle when reading this .. and do agree .. either you're there or you're not .. if you're working .. then change you status message to that ... but don't lurk and hide ...
