((OOC: To all our readers, this story takes place in the RPG known as RIFTS (not the computer game Rift).))
Terror.
Tears streamed down Talia’s face as one of the monsters buried it’s horrid face in Em’s gut, as her shriek abruptly changed to a gurgle, joining the four others who had already been torn apart by the creatures. Talia delivered a telekinetic punch that knocked the horror over and sent it flying into the tree behind it with a loud CRACK as the monster flew through the old tree. The tree fell, fortunately not hitting anyone, but not hitting any of the other creatures.
Unfortunately, the armored creature’s spine was not as fragile as the two foot diameter tree.
It snarled at her as it rose, and charged at her.
Rex’s railgun chattered, tearing apart the face of one of the four-legged beasts as it charged him.
The air crackled with energy as Elrin wove a spell…which died with the elf as another monster’s tail impaled him.
Rene rammed a grenade down the throat of one as it bit down and then ripped her arm clear off. Her scream filled the air.
Talia focused on the beast charging her, focusing her mind as she delivered a downward hammer stroke, causing a telekinetic hammer to strike the creature, shattering one of it’s legs, eliciting a roar of pain as the beast stumbled over it’s broken limb.
Rene’s grenade exploded the beast in a shower of gore, taking the dying woman with it.
It was her and Rex against two of these things.
She fought the panic welling within her, focusing it into another TK hammer on the creature.
Rex brought his railgun to bare on Elrin’s murderer, it jinked, causing most of his barrage to miss. The beast closed the distance and leapt at him, he dropped his gun and rolled out of its way, drawing his laser pistol as he did.
Talia delivered another blow as her foe made another attempt to rush her despite it’s leg.
Rex shot the creature in the side as it whirled around for another pass. The scorch mark seemed to do little more than anger it more.
It was almost upon her, mere feet away. She needed to keep it away, keep those teeth, claws and tail away from her. It was going to maul her, just like the others. She wasn’t going to die, she wasn’t. She wasn’t going to let it eat her; she wouldn’t let them eat her friends. Making the motion of an uppercut, tremendous telekinetic force followed, striking the stomach, and propelling it into the air. While it was propelled up, inertia also kept it going forward, sending Talia flying backwards as it slammed into her. Bouncing around inside her ill-fitted armor, she screamed as her frail left shoulder was dislocated upon landing. Tears welled as she fought the pain. Her foe’s howl of pain abruptly ended as it crashed back down to the earth.
Through her closed eyes, she saw the flash of another laser bolt, she heard the crash of mega-damage metal on mega-damage bone, the creature’s howl as it’s jaw was dislocated, Rex’s shouts as his armor was clawed at.
Forcing her eyes open, she saw the creature tearing his armor, Rex trying to get another good hit in with his bionic arm, his laser knocked from his hand…and then the creature’s tail found an opening, driving through a weak point in his armor, stabbing through his side and up into the partial-borg’s organs.
“NOOOOO!” she screamed as her last friend died. The creature slashed at its latest kill a few more times, making sure it was dead, before turning toward her.
She was going to die.
