There's been a lot of hype about that commercial. Have they found the guy who posted it yet?Roxanne Appleby said:
I saw them talking about it this morning and they said the Obama camp denied any involvement. Then they joked that he was probably reaming his group for not coming up with anything this clever.Jenny_Jackson said:There's been a lot of hype about that commercial. The answer to speech you don't like is more speech you don't like. Not infringements on the First Amendment like futile campaign finance laws that only ensconse more firmly the well padded bottoms of incumbents in their current seats, and cripple the ability of grass roots groups to engage in the political process.shereads said:It was posted by more than one source, making it nearly impossible to trace.
Scary, isn't it? It's now possible to sign someone else's name to any message, circulated worldwide, without fear of being exposed. And whoever did this can be confident that most of the sheep in the herd will take this at face value. This makes "swiftboating" look almost tame in comparison; it's hard to hide your identity when you're buying TV time.
Now that hackers from all sides of the political spectrum have been given the idea, we can look forward to this kind of cowardice from any number of sources. Humor. Haha.

I understand a Hillary supporter has hijacked this and pasted in an Obama speech. It's too transparent, and besides, she evokes this kind of spooky image, and he doesn't. (Spooky "man on a white horse" imagery will be more fitting for someone who wants to go after him.)
PS. I blew it with the thread title - it should have been, "Obama hammers Hillary."![]()

Shit... image and speech aren't even connected.
What the fuck! Are we now celebrating crap in this country? Now, I know the democrats are in the middle of boring race. Geez, can't wait for the Republicans.
Give me the gunboat ads any day!
I got news for you, babe - those "groups" you cite are exactly who have been frozen out by these laws. The big boys will always be able to hire the lawyers and find the loopholes to buy themselves access. It's the "little people" who try to conform with this skein of rules and prohibitions who throw up their hands and walk away. Congratulations - laws like McCain Feingold have completed the professionalizaton of politics. Be careful what you wish for.shereads said:I'm all for free speech. It's paid speech that's turned the legislative process into a closed auction.
Note that I'm not suggesting any kind of censorship. In regard to this commercial, there is no First Amendment right to sign someone else's name to your idea.
I'm not even suggesting that something should be done. The creators of the commercial can't be prosecuted for libel or fraud, because they can't be traced. I'm just expressing dismay at how low we've sunk. It's no longer necessary to attack an opponent in the open, where you might be subject to reprisals in-kind. This way is cowardly, but safe and probably effective.
