Posting a thread on this as things are slowly heating up, and it appears for now, that there is a ton of steam driving both states towards approving gay marriage.

NJ:
1) Gov. John Corizine has promised to sign a gay marriage bill into law if it comes to his desk.
2) Bill SCR-30 requesting a vote to amend the state constitution to define marriage as between a man and a woman has all but been blocked and effectively stalled by the Legislature, infuriating gay rights activists.
3) Bill S2898 sponsor, Senator Weinburg is already predicting gay marriage in NJ by the end of the year.
4) A recent poll of residents of NJ show approx 50% support gay marriage, 30% support unions. However in the choice between marriage or none, marriage is heavily supported.
5) The big possible holdup? Its election year for the governor, so with the bill being as controversial as it is, it may be held off till late Nov.

NY:
1) Gov Paterson has sworn to sign the current gay marriage law.
2) Passed the State House this past week, with both Democratic and Republican support.
3) NY State Senators have a deep rooted desire to beat NJ to the punch in passing the law.
4) The possible holdup? Upstate Senators. 32 votes are needed to pass the Senate, with Democrats holding 32 seats. The Senate Majority Leader will not introduce the bill till he is positive he has at least 32 yes votes.

Ah, the old, old, old competition between Eastern States. I never before wished CA was in competition with any states , but now, seeing what good results could come of it, I do.

Yup and the NJ/NY rivalry runs very, very deep indeed. Considering that NJ is home to both the NY football teams, NYC residents tend to thumb thier nose up at NJ [except when they flood it during the summer for the beaches], and that NJ has ownership of Ellis island, as well as the fact that the US Bureau of Immigration accepts NJ as an answer to where the Statue of Liberty is located.

You can add NH into that list of NorthEastern states attempting to get their own bills through.
NH bill HB73 was narrowly defeated in the House after the governor tweaked the bill. However, the vote to kill it failed, and the bill is being sent to the State Senate to have the wording reworked, and it expected to be passed back to the House by June 10th.
The original bill, HB 436 had passed the House, been tweaked in the Senate, then passed both the House and the Senate before being tweaked by the governor.

Now New Hampshire would be a BIG victory, no question about it.

Ayup NH would be a big victory. Another state added to the list of those that legally allow gay marriage.

You just lost a state that has more people than most nations. But of you think Twinkleville is gonna make up for it, you have another think coming.

There's a reason NH holds the first primaries in presidential years. Although it definitely is left-leaning, it has a bit more of a working class and libertarian streak than some of the other New England states. It's small, but far from insignificant as a bellweather for moderate liberal thought.

NJ - Bill created, awaiting Legislature vote

NY- In the State Senate awaiting vote

NH- Signed into law

So the big victory does indeed to to the Granite State. Crusty ol' New Hampshire comes through.
Yes, but don't tell NY or NJ. We want them to keep thinking they're the only ones in this battle so they'll keep fighting to get there first ;)

lol oh I doubt that matters...the big race is just between the two of them, as far as they're concerned.

Get real. Most counties in California are larger than New Hampshire.

You've all seen the New Yorker magazine cover from years ago showing Manhattan as half the world. They believe it. ;)

I grew up in NJ...trust me I've dealt with enough folks from NYC to testify to this. They hate tourists in their city, and have no issues with telling everyone they're from NYC when they're out touring [and usually abusing] other areas.

Word up! We get more than our share of Noo Yahkas down here when it gets chilly up there...they think the world's their sandbox and everyone else is shit. ;)

"I don't go into the city."

"What?!?! Why don't you go into the city? It's the greatest place on earth. You can get everything there! Do everything there! Meet anyone there!"

"Yeah, I can go there and meet obnoxious people like you that annoy the hell out of me going on about how they can do whatever they like there, and get stuck in traffic the entire time, paying for parking that i get for free out here, while dodging taxis (even while parked). I don't think so."

What was the topic again? I really fucking hate New York City...

"I think people who move out of New York get out of touch, you know? I have this friend. He's an educated guy, reads the Times and everything and I was telling him about how I'd heard that when Bob Woodward was about to break the Watergate scandal, he'd told his editor that he was willing to risk everything for the story. The editor said, 'I'm not!' and I thought that was so interesting. And you know, my friend didn't even care! I think you get out of touch, that's all"

What the twerp didn't realize is that his friend couldn't understand why anyone would care! In touch with what?
