Iraq Parliament Moves to Legalize Marriage for Nine-Year-Old Girls

Frances Martel8 Aug 2024 6:42

Organizers have planned protests in at least seven provinces on Thursday throughout Iraq in response to the introduction of amendments to a core family legal framework that could legalize child marriages, deprive widows of their inheritance, and facilitate sex slavery.

The Iraqi Parliament began to debate amendments to the Personal Status Law on Sunday that would, critics say, effectively dissolve the country’s universal standards to protect women and girls on matters such as consent to marriage, alimony, and custody of children by allowing men to opt out, choosing traditional Shiite or Sunni Islamic mandates, instead. While child marriages, sex slavery, and other abuses are rampant in modern-day Iraq, they are not technically legal. Iraqi law currently requires both men and women to be 18 years old to enter marriage, allows a woman to inherit her husband’s assets in the event of his death, and allows for unconditional inter-religious marriage.

The amendments to the secularized Personal Status Law, passed in 1959, would allow the relevant men in a marriage or proposed marriage to choose whether to apply Sunni sharia rules or Shiite sharia. It does not discuss other religions, such as Christianity, Zoroastrianism, or the Yazidi faith, which once boasted vibrant constituencies in Iraq but were almost entirely exterminated by the Islamic State (ISIS) “caliphate” in the past decade. Members of minority religions would most likely have to abide by the current form of the Personal Status Law.

Notably, the updated law would require Shiites to use a sharia code based on the Ja’afari school of Islamic law. The Ja’afari school provides that girls can enter a legal marriage at age nine and boys at age 15. It gives full custody of children of divorced couples to the fathers, unless the man chooses to give up custody to the mother, and includes a provision for an arrangement known as a “pleasure marriage,” which “is a temporary marriage that can last as little as an hour,” according to the Middle East outlet the Media Line. Human rights activists noted that the provision has the potential to be abused to facilitate prostitution and sex slavery, as a man can claim participating in those actions was merely a “pleasure marriage.”

One wonders if this kind of behavior will seep into our own imported Muslim culture?

What a glorious thing that we allowed Iraq to do by overthrowing Saddam Hussein....I'm sure that the women and girls in Iraq feel particularly protected and liberated now, right? (n) This is what we fought for, just like in Libya, Afghanistan, and Syria....instead of stabilizing these places, we destabilized them. These endless, regime-change wars, as Tulsi Gabbard likes to call them, have been an unmitigated disaster for humanity, and yet they continued through administrations of both parties. To be fair, though, Trump didn't end them, either, though, to his credit, he started no new wars, which was a surprisingly low bar, but he met it at least.

If you think Muslims are bad with children, just wait until you hear about what the Catholic Church in America does to them.
Yes, both are bad, so are the Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, Scientologists (just horrible, I tell you!), FLDS, etc. It turns out that hanging on to Bronze Age superstitions and weird, occult notions isn't really good for the mental and emotional stability of parents, children, or other adult minders/caregivers.

If you try to assinate a US president, better get your hideyhole dug. :)

You're trying way too hard to play in the middle. It makes your opinions worthless.

Whatever, dude. I'll concern myself with your views when I gain an ounce of respect for you. At present, I have none. Sheep are sheep.

Why is it that all of you fake independents think that informed people are sheep? If you notice, you can't find a single lie or "alternative fact" in any of my posts. Why? Because I fully research and check my sources and my points before bringing them here, that's why.

You're not a serious person.

The feeling is mutual. And you're not informed. You're deluded. I'm not a fake independent, either, but think what you wish. I wash my hands of you. Your sources tend to believe whatever the State tells them, I might add. Never mind how often our government lies to us. In the words of George Carlin, "I don't believe anything that my government tells me."

Go ahead and find a falsehood posted by me. Otherwise, pipe down, adults are talking.

When you can't find an untruth, I'll allow you to apologize.

That's how you know for a fact that I'm informed.

Yawns while ignoring the moron above me.....iggy is such a nice button sometimes.

So, let me see...Lazaran, Rory, schism, Rotadam, Saint Ann, a lot of folks on my iggy list. It's growing, but that's cool. One shouldn't waste one's breath on idiots.

SevMin2 copped to being autistic in another post, so take that for what it’s worth.

Side note:

I thought I detected a mental disease or defect in their communication style.

Confirmed.

The war machine is going to ground to a halt pretty soon, due to simply lacking the numbers....or else they're going to have bring back the draft....and that's gonna lead to riots that will make 1863 look like a cakewalk. Face it....the one good thing about the war in Ukraine....every bullet that a Ukrainian catches....doesn't end up in an American. Well, that and it's exhausting Russia's war machine at a time when we need that to happen. If we're weaker, we need Russia to be weaker. There's a lot of waste and fraud and graft involved in the funding and arms sent to Ukraine, but compared to the cost of a direct war, it's peanuts.

This thread is about the situation in Iraq. GW invaded Iraq after 911 to avenge people pooping on his father's image in Baghdad. I mean, for godsakes, uranium enrichment tubes were flowing into Iraq from deepest darkest AFRICA!!!

So, we got attacked by Saudi terrorists based in Afghanistan, and we responded by invading Iraq. Well, those Middle Easterners all look the same, right? That's just good common-sense GOP "logic".

Damn I wish the Republican Supreme Court had not handed the 2000 election over to that fool!

Rightguide is hopping the next flight to Iraq after stocking up on canned corn.

No comparison

Actually, forgetting the Catholic Church, which has had it's issues, as does any organization where males are in authority over younger females - schools spring to mind - I had no idea our age of consent laws were what they were, back a hundred years ago. Iraq's npt looking so bad....

In 1880, 37 US states set the age of consent at 10 years, 10 states set an age of consent at 12 years, and Delaware had an age of consent of 7 years. Isn't that where Biden's from? He probably never caught up on raised age.....
