Can anybody describe exactly what a nursing bra is? From what I have read, it seems to be a bra, worn by a woman in late pregnancy and while nursing, that is comfortable and designed for comfort because it is used to support breasts that are sensitive and laden with milk. I will be mentioning it in a future story, and I don't want to seem like an ignorant man.

nursing bras come in many different styles... if you look hard enough. for sleeping, i preferred one without the under-wire, that i could easily slip my breast out of. like a sports bra but cotton and not so constricting. day time bras can come with an under-wire or stronger band at the bottom... but the cup is softer... flexible for when one is lactating and gets swollen. normally have a hook on the front of the bra that can be undone to allow access to the nipple.

I preferred the sports type also even in the daytime. Not as supportive as the traditional nursing bra with the flap, but much more comfortable. Easy to slip out a breast for feeding.

You would probably wear a nursing bra at night for the first month or so, as it's common to leak then and you need to use pads. You might choose to wear a sleep nursing bra though - as otherwise, you can fall out of it lying on your side. They are shaped like crop tops with no 'gap' between the breasts, per se.

Many women wear maternity bras - basically, bras with no underwire - for much of pregnancy, as breasts grow so much and can be sensitive from the beginning.

Also, if you don't wear a nursing bra at night, with pads in case you leak, you can end up with a soaking wet bed, esp if baby slept a little longer than usual.
