I've always thought there is much more freedom to play in gothic as compared to classical in terms of architecture. Not withstanding Rococo. Still, it's gothic play does it for me. And the interplay of red and black and skin - oh soaring heights!

Wow, no, it didn't look like that!

It also had weird thin vertical strings at the windows instead of net curtains, which I assumed afforded some kind of privacy given that there were people walking past outside (although it was on the first floor...).

So I (we!) just blithely wandered around partially clothed or nude. It was only the following day that it became obvious that the weird strings were entirely ... cosmetic, and didn't hide anything at all!

(like we actually cared, of course...)

It's the Egyptians who really got it. They understood that to make it look like it was doing the job in hand, a column needed to look monumentally phallic.
