What other sites is everyone using? What are the good and bad points of each?

Napster is supposed to be back up after the software upgrade. Fewer songs, but still a great selection of indies, etc. And I haven't used it, but I've heard gnutella is good.

I use Bearshare, part of the gnutella network, the bad part about it is the servers stay busy a lot, so it takes awhile for transfers begin.

Limewire is another part of the network, it resumes your transfers automatically. (I tried it, but it was a major memory hog on my computer.)

Both programs have MP3, video, and picture sharing available.

Personally

Napster, or any other site is a rip off. How would you guys feel if your a musician and this site allows you to get their music for free, SO...your paycheck is suddenly ruduced? I say, if your REALLY into a singer, or band, support them by BUYING THE FUCKING CD!!!!!!!!!! And if you don't have enough $, GET A FUCKING JOB!!!!!!!!!

Let see how that arguement works with me.

I found ApologetiX on Napster. Never had I hear of them before, noone including the churches music Minister had heard them in my church. The three Christian bookstores in my community never hear of them. I downloaded, listened to them, liked them. Called the bookstores and got them to order them all 5 CD's i went and bought them. 5 CD's that I otherwise would never of even heard of I bought and the artist got the money.

Same goes true with Rich Mullins{3 CD's}, Jars of Clay{2 CD's}, Jesus Christ Super Star Sound track{2 cd collection}, Kieth Green {3 CD's}. With out napster these artists I would never of heard of or had the opportunity to buy these artists who were not available or heard of in my area.

So napster helped these artist make money.

You've obviously never used Napster, Nasty. I'm with Todd on this one. I've used Napster to research bands and musicians that I otherwise would never hear or hear of. Napster has inspired several CD purchases that I would otherwise never have known about.

I'm opposed to Napster making money, if the artist suffers. In your case, Napster was able to help bothe them and the musician, so I WILL applaud that. HOWEVER, if you frequent the site, just for the hell of it, I shun that behavior.

napster didn't make any money of this, because i don't pay for napster.

and I always visit it just for the "hell" of it, and put in random words looking for something new to me that i might be interestied in. then i find it and if i like it i buy it.

Just found a new artist a couple of days ago, by frequenting just for the "hell" of it John Jonethis. Now I got to call the store and see f they can get him ordered in

Do you know how many copies of Stairway to Heaven I've purchased over the years. I don't think it is Jimmy Page I keep supporting with each new technology change. Everyone else is taking a cut. The artist gets his/her shaft up front.

Anyway, I asked this question a few weeks back. I tried Limewire and it sucked. I never downloaded anything, my downloads never even started, just sat there on some mysterious countdown forever. So I've been dealing with Gnutella the best I can.

blah blah blah blah.......i own over 400 cd's and if i had to add up all the money wasted on cd's with one or two good songs on them, i figure they owe me that much anyway....btw, if i like the songs i buy the cd, if not i download what i like......i think napster and the like is going to force musicians to start putting out better product, nuff said........... audiogalaxy.com good site for downloading...............:p

I'm so glad you approve or I might have had to hand myself over to the record company's so they could have me arrested and sued.

Who gives a fuck if napster makes money off the back's of artistes, their only doing what everybody else is from the the guy's who sell T shirt's up to the the record companys.

In this country we get screwed by the record company's who charge us £15 for a CD so I say "fuck em" and let them catch me if they can.

BTW imesh is good if you don't mind the wait.

That isn't precisely what I meant by "the hell of it." I'll try and clarify. What I mean is if you go on Napster and RECORD songs, "for the hell of it." If you can go on the site, find a new artist, and then go out and buy the CD, than BRAVO!!!!!!!!! What I don't like is when people go on the site and record their own personalized CD. Congrats, Todd. You did the admirable thing in my book. I CAN'T STRESS IT ENOUGH, IF YOU LIKE THE ARTIST, SUPPORT THEM BY BUYING THE CD!!!!!!!!!!!! BTW-Aw, if you are reluctant to buy the CD because it may have only 2 songs on it you like, record stores have this feature where you can listen to it BEFORE you buy it. I didn't mean for that to come out sounding rude.

Yup Napster is back up but you have to download the new format.

I would think everybody should care if napster takes money of the artist's back. That is, unless you want your favorite bands not performing for you anymore because they're bankrupt. I, for one, would HATE to see one of my favorite singer's to lose money and have to quit making records anymore because of some website.

Are you an artist? I doubt it highly. I have quite a few musical artists as clients who WANTED their work put out on Napster. Most of them got their work out there by me putting their new tracks on Napster and sharing them. Have you any idea how much recording artists make when they hit it big? Downloading songs off the internet is not going to hurt them at all.

I bet you tape songs you like off the radio, don't you.

I don't, actually

Sorrybut I havn't recorded songs off the radio in a LONG TIME!!!!!!! And, your right, I'm not an artist. If they want their music on Napster, and it dosn't run them out of business, I'll accept that.

Napster had many supporters. Famous, well paid ones.

Lars pisses me off. He's a hypocrite.

Rest assured

If I say it properly, it dosn't come out sounding hypocriticall. Sometimes I can fumble up my meaning, to which I DO sound like a hypocrite. Sorry about that. All I know is, people that record songs off Napster are HORRIBLE!!!!!!!!! I'm all for supporting people, so I would rather buy the CD than get it for free. I'm not into the winning CD's unless I KNOW I will like it.

audiogalaxy has been a pretty good place to share songs lately.

As for the support the artists and buy the CD argument, I am a musician and I give my songs away for free......the more people that hear them the happier it makes me and it is in itself a great reward. I write, perform, record and produce everything here at my house. All at my own expense.....

People who record for major lables get "advances" on their work.....they get studio time paid for and production paid for as well as promotion. Then the lable scoops its rightful share of the profits...

all this, including napster, is unimportant to a musician who makes music for reasons other than cash.

nasty, you're heart is in the right place, thanks.

No problem man

Thank you for finally saying musicians make music for more than just the money. Not all singer's are stuck up as some people make them out to be. I would rather go out and buy a CD to support people such as yourself than get a personalized CD on Napster ANYDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
