Now I am pissed

We have a pear tree in the backyard that only has fruit every other year, but when it does.....the branches get so overloaded with pears that they literally touch the ground.

I beg my neighbors to come get some pears. As many as they want, and as often as they want.

One of my neighbors has that problem with her fruit trees. They seem to over produce. (She has Mangoes and Tangeloes.) She had let it be known that people could come in and pick until she saw one lady show up with her car and several clothes baskets. When my neighbor asked her what she was doing the lady got quite upset as she explained that she was picking the fruits to sell at the local Flea Market. (The woman didn't even live in the park, she heard about the trees from a friend of hers.) Now my neighbor either lets the fruit drop and then tosses it, or she picks it for her friends.

There have been multiple problems with this down here.

Freecycle

There are several active Freecycle groups locally.

All of them have had to introduce rules about "resellers" - people who collect freecycled stuff and then make a profit by selling it. They didn't mind the fixers-up who took broken and/or damaged stuff, worked on it and then sold or swapped it. What they did object to were the people who would collect everything and anything, try to sell it and throw it away if it would'nt sell.

Today I've received a message from one group. They used to rehome pets for example cats and dogs if their owner had to go into residential care, surplus kittens, rabbits etc. In their area the current owner and the new owners used to meet and frequently contact was maintained once the pets had moved. But they have been swamped with requests for pets from outside their area and found that several loved family pets had been collected and then sold on to who knows who. They have stopped freecycling pets from today.

Some people will exploit generosity.

I wish I had a neighbor with mangoes and tangelos.

However, I do have one with orange trees. She gifts my family with a couple of bags of oranges every Christmas.

They aren't very good for peeling, sectioning and eating out of hand, but they're excellent juice oranges.

I've made a lot of Planter's Punch out of them.

Cat, your neighbor sounds like a wackjob.

Well everything was where it was supposed to be when I got home this evening. Hopefully the plants will now be allowed to grow.
