nonhuman story idea

I had an idea as I am reading through the nonhuman story category. Since in the modern age in most places werewolves or giant cats or whatever would be fairly easy to spot, wouldn't they adapt? I'd love to see a story where the shape shifters became known dog breeds, which would help them blend into the modern world much better. There is probably room there for cat shifters as well, but I personally would have trouble with most cat breeds as a serious threat, I guess their hybrid forms could have human size.
Imagine the shock when the intended mate finds out that the stray dog that keeps following them... isn't.
