A Discovery Times (New York Times) program, "A Decent Factory: Made in China" aired this night on cable television. I should know better.
I am curious...about many things...the riots in France and Germany and Belgium and the why's and wherefore's.
It seems, with an aging population and low birth rate, European nations have been importing cheap labor from Africa, Blacks and Muslims, to do the work Europeans will not/cannot do. (Not unlike the Hispanics in the Southwest in the USA)
However, with the multitudinous welfare programs of European Socialism and the near absolute lack of opportunity and upward mobility (gee they don't want to stay busmen forever) the imported young men are acting out...surprise...surprise.
Yeah, I know, I digress....
Nokia, the Fin company headquartered there, hired two consultants to travel to China and visit a Chinese factory that produces power supplies for Nokia Cell Phones, sold all over the world.
Nokia is in China, as are the Germans and the Dutch and the British, because labor costs are low.
But, subject to criticism for 'slave labor' bad working conditions, exploiting labor, Nokia felt obligated to investigate...for the first time ever, working conditions in the Chinese factory.
What they found, was a German owned factory, (in China) with British and German (male) management and 90 plus percentage employees, of 20 year old Chinese girls.
They are paid the equivalent of $2.65 per day (US dollars) and work 10-12 hours each day. They are required to live in company provided dormitories and eat company prepared food at cafeteria's and are charged over half there wages for room and board.
They live 8 to a room with very poor sanitary conditions with only cold running water for showers. The food is poor and they spend what they can afford to supplement the food supplied by the company.
They have no contractual agreements with the company, which is against Chinese law, they are forced to work overtime, approximately 36 hours a week, with which, their total income is less than the law requires for minimum wage, according to Chinese labor law.
Each must sign a permit of 'birth control' and are immediately fired if they become pregnant. (China has a 'one child only law' and forced abortion is perpetrated for any who dare violate the law)
The point of all of this? Not really sure...but with all the criticism of America for outsourcing jobs, and corporations seeking cheap labor; if you look down at your cellphone and it says "Nokia" on it, it was manufactured in China, under the conditions I outlined above.
Enjoy your phone call.
