More curious questions...

Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas?

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?

Again, bs is welcome from non-writers who frequent here. Judging by the last lot of answers, no wonder Shereads is our patron saint.

Hi :)

Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas?
Yes, always.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?
if something grabs me, then yep I write wherever I am. If I'm in a meeting, I'll make quick notes and write them up at a more convenient time

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?
Am neck high in course work at the moment. Fascinating stuff. Intend doing a literature paper next.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?
I have several authors who are willing to look through my writing and who aren't afraid to let me know their minds. lol

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?
middle of the night - dining room table. daytime - pc in study. weirdest place? nowhere's too weird for getting something down on paper and outa my head.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?
both have their uses.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?
one novel, half a dozen short stories and a double semester's worth of exercises which will lead to more short stories

Re: Re: No 2: what type of lit writer/would be writer are you?

Alrighty! More fun survey to fill instead of doing the work I should be doing. :)

Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas?
If I did, I wouldn't be able to read what I jotted down. I have a serious case of bad handwriting. Thought about getting a PDA, but I'd probably lose it.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?
No problemo. As long as it's not threatening my health and/or life, I can write.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?
Not since high school. I've read some couirse literature on my own, but that's it.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?
For some of my work, yes. I write stageplays in workshop with the actors, and I have an editor in my very cool grandmother, who used to be a creative writing teacher. I don't think she's cool enough to audit my attempts at smut though. Or maybe I'm not cool enough to let her. :)

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?
At home, at my desk, on my 'puter. Or if the weather is fine, on the balcony. Weirdest place? Me, a laptop, a 200 meter extension cord and a rocky hilltop in the outer Swedish west coast peninsula.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?
See the first Q. :)

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?
One novel, one stageplay, one short erotic story, two poems, one comic album script, three songs, one essay, one schoolbook and one grocery list.

Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas?
No, but I do have paper and pencil beside my bed.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?
Yes, a lifetime of practice ... As an aside, I remember a time before open-plan offices.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?
No.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?
Not for short stories. My published work is copy-edited at the publishers, but never for story line.

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?
At a computer screen in a book lined study.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?
On screen.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?
I have a half finished novel. I have a contract for four more novels which are in the planning/research stage. I have one half-finished short story from an idea by LadiDarkMoon (thank you).
Less likely to go anywhere, there are four more partly written novels which are unlikely to be finished; finally, there are ten ideas in my "possible" folder (though someone else picked up one of them when I threw it out on Story Ideas).

Oh, and the "Best Novel of the Third Millennium", my great contribution to English Literature, which will win me the Nobel Prize, is also in the planning stage, and has been for some time.

Bloody machine didn't listen when I thought I hit edit!

Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas?
Yes when I know Ill have time alone.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?
Sometimes, depends on how my mood is.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?
Yes, creative writing online through our local community college. Id love to do more, but need to take some grammar courses first.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?
Dampy, Lucky, and JMT when he has time. They are the best of the best, SIR!

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?
In my living room, in bed, in the car, at work if I have a thought on the go and dont want to loose it. The dentist office would be the weirdest.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?
Both, write ideas down or scenes, then put them on the computer when I get home.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?
I have about a half dozen stories and two novellas on the go. Short stories need to be edited the novellas need to be finished.

Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas?
Yes, to a dr.s appt, etc., sure

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?
To a certain extent, it doesn't bother me (lived in a dorm when I was in college). Too quiet is just as much a distraction as anything else.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?
yes....many. I have a minor in English.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?
So far, no, although it would probably be a good idea. Have bounced some ideas off a few people here, but that's about it.

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?
Most of the time, on my computer. The weirdest place? hmmm, on an airplane, I suppose, but that's not that weird.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?
Both, depends where I am when the mood strikes.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?
Two short stories in the works, one novel about a third of the way done.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?

I have a friend who edits.

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?

The bathtub.

Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas? nope, I stay home all the time, so I don't really need one.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)? Yes, I have four kids, so if I didn't write with distractions, I would never get anything written.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more? I never have.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)? yes

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written? Generally write in my living room, sometimes my bedroom. I have never written anywhere weird.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer? both

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment? 5

Generally no but occasionally a reporter's pad.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?

Yes.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?

Yes. Management courses in writing reports and currently a creative writing course.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?

No.

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?

At home in my study. At work in my bookshop.

Leaning against a fencepost on top of the White Cliffs of Dover; during a City Council meeting while waiting to address the Council.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?

Almost always at my computer but see answer above.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?

Depends on the definition of 'working'. I have over 100 stories part completed and about 5 being added to daily.

No, but if I think of a idea or even a sentence I write it down.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?

No, I need quiet!

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?

Yes I have, no plans for another course as of now.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?

No, but I had a Lit editor for my first story here.

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?

At the computer or in bed.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?

Both, although I like writing on the computer best.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?

2 stories now.

I always try to keep at least a pad of paper and a pen in my bag, as much for making lists and taking other notes as for writing down ideas.

Yes, but not as well. I do most of my writing at work, which is a psych facility. So, sometimes, there's quite a bit of distraction.

I took 3 creative writing courses in college, but I don't think they were all that helpful.

Collaborative writing is one of those things that I admire in others, but cannot do myself. I do have a couple of people I rely on to edit big projects.

I usually write at work. The most unusual place would have to be the pool deck of a cruise ship docked in Cozumel.

Almost always on the computer; very infrequently longhand (and then I just have to retype it into the computer anyway!)

At the moment, I have one story in progress, a kid's book and a novel awaitng final edits, and a couple of stories simmering in the back of my brain.

Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas? I have a notepad I carry at work, usually for work related notes, but I use it for writing ideas.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)? No, but I write best with headphones on and ass kicking rock music.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more? In high school, I took creative writing. I tried to take one in college, but the professor was all full of bullshit, so I don't plan on taking any more.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)? No. I just have a friend who like to read my stuff. She masturbated to one of my stories.

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written? At my desk on the computer. Weirdest place? Hmm, I jotted a note on a napkin at the Deja Vu strip club between couch dances. My fuck buddy and the stripper were curious as to what I was writing. I had a hot idea I felt I needed to write down immediately. I was afraid the naked pussy would make me forget.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer? Computer. I rarely write on paper since I have to put it in the computer later.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment? One novel, one short story are in progress. My notebook has 8 novel ideas, 3 are spin-offs from the current work, and 11 short story ideas.

Re: Re: No 2: what type of lit writer/would be writer are you?

I have gotten away from writing a bit and since I would like to come back to it I figured this was a nice exercise to get my feet wet again....

Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas?
No, but I should.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?
not very well... unless it is an idea that I really need to capture.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?
not since high school/ college... but I went to a half-day writer's seminar a few years ago that was pretty inspiring and informational.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?
not formally, but had an editor for my last story (Pure) who helped me greatly improve my story before posting it.

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?
typically at my desktop computer, or sometimes in my living room by the fire. I also love to write in coffeehouses.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?
I write on the computer, mostly because it is more efficient for me. I like writing things down on paper, but I know if I did that I would never get to the step of transferring it to the computer for editing, posting, etc.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?
I have one story that was started in the fall and that I would like to get back to, and one novel idea that popped into my head the other day and that I would like to develop - possibly for NaNo 2004. :)

Wow, I'm glad this is on here--I just finally got back into writing even a little bit in the last month, so it'll be INTERESTING to see what I have to say! ;)

Do you carry a notebook around with you in which to jot down ideas?
Well, I always have one on me, as a college student, but that's just kindof life for me. In high school, I made the effort, but I don't know how much I actually used it. These days, I actually use the ones that I have around. It's kindof nice. :)

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?
I CAN, but not if I have something really specific that I need down. My environment changes what I'm writing--you can kindof tell in my prose and the direction of my tone when I change environments or when something changes. And my poetry is very sensitive to environmental impacts.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?
I went to a week-long summer camp a couple of years ago, but aside from that, I haven't done anything for my creative writing efforts. It's kindof sad, but simultaneously, I needed a break.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?
I haven't found someone whose opinion I really want to hear. At least not someone willing to read my latest stuff (erotica) who actually knows what s/he is talking about. I don't need a grammar/usage editor. If anything, I'd need work with higher order concerns such as plot and character development and tone.

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?
Well, being a college student, I can't get too attached. I write in my dorm when I'm in college, but sometimes I'll also do the library or the cafe. At home, usually downstairs in "the cave" or in my room. However, I USED to write EVERYWHERE--seriously. I'd write on the buses for school trips, I'd write any time I was outside...the most memorable time was writing at 5:30 in the morning after having spent the last night of an amazing summer with my friends in my cult-friend's living room. Just...memorable times.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?
My prose style and word choice are better when I'm writing with paper, but if I have an idea I need to run with for a while or if I'm thinking really quickly, I prefer my laptop because I can type more quickly than I can write by hand.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?
Wow. Excellent question. I've abandoned at least a dozen short stories that had so much potential, and I've aborted my novel after nearly 100 pages. Right now, I have probably two (erotica) short stories cooking, but I don't know what I'm keeping there and what's going away. Aside from that, I'm taking it one sentence at a time. ;)

Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas?

yeah... sometimes. Doesn't work really well when you wanna write a diddy from inside your head.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?

I dunno, I guess I can. I don't write as often as I should to really know whether or not this is an issue I face.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?

In Grade 3... yeah, that's it. Sad isn't it? I mostly picked up how I wrote from writing poetry, reading disctionaries and trying to pick up the flow and the nuances of how a language is built and all that.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?

Nope. At least, not in the literary format. Musical format, yes.

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?

On my computer. Weirdest? Wuzzah? No clue. On a public transit bus?

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?

My handy dandy computer that's slaving for me 14 hours a day or so.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?

1 or 2. Too centred around music to focus on writing too much.

No. I figure if I can;t remember it, it wasn't worth remembering

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?

No.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?

BA in English Composition. Writing classes are good because they force you to write and the provide a place to get critiqued, but I don't think anyone can teach you how to write. They can point you in the direction of some good literature and help you understand what makes it good, but they can't teach you how to do it yourself

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?

No.

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?

Computer in my living room. Weirdest? Don't know. Out on the sun porch in the winter maybe

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?

I'm like Liar. My handwriting is just awful and slow. I have to type.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?

One story.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?
~ I can't write if it's too quiet. I like to write w/ music blasting.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?
~ Nope. I took Lit classes in college, but no creative writing courses.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?
~ Nope.

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?
~ Anywhere. Weirdest place was in the bathroom...late at night, I didn't want to wake my boyfriend by turning on the lights. So I took my notebook into the bathroom for a bit. He must have noticed anything, because in the morning, he asked if I had a tummy ache. i must have been in the bathroom for quite a while.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?
~ Both, depending on where I am.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?
~ Tons of ideas, very few of them are worth a darn.

Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas?

When I'm on campus I have a notebook with me, but I never seem to get ideas there! I have one of those dinky little Olympus pocket recorders which I try to remember to carry, too

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?

Yes, but only briefly. Basically, I need solitude, maybe a CD playing - nothing that demands listening!

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?

I'm doing an evening class in Creative Writing. It's fun, but I think I learn nearly as much from my fellow writers here. Some of the 'How-To' pieces are excellent. I've also signed up for a couple of the Open University short courses on writing - fiction, poetry, plays.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?

Sometimes, not always

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?

Our smallest bedroom is my office. All of my reference books are there and that's where I work. Nowhere weird. Yet.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?

Almost totally on computer. I share handwriting skills with other contributors here.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?

Quite a few. Two novels, about a dozen short pieces.

b]Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas? [/b]

Nope.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?

Music or telly are the exception, but otherwise no distractions allowed!

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?

No, and don't really intend to in the future. I've done all the courses I intend doing. No more learning! :D

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?

No, but when things get desperate I start PM'img people!

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?

At the computer desk. Nowhere weird. Often on flights when I have time to kill.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?

Never on paper. (although my writing is neat!). I do a lot of finetuning, which I can't do on paper.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?

I have three stories awaiting the next chapter - but as yet have not started! I also have a half completed story that may take a few months before I get to it.

Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas?
Yes, all the time.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?
Music, yes, people, yes, phone, no, kids - bite their heads off.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?
Yes, several. When I was a teenager. It was great for meeting other writers, and getting inspired to write. I'd love to do it again. I've even been to a Writers' Camp - it was heaven! One whole week of inspiration! We spent all evenings and half of the nights playing games, and every now and then, someone would jump up and run into his/her room, and come back about one hour later witha poem, that everyone listened to with great interest. Aaaahhhh...

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?
No.

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?
Usually, I write when I'm waiting for the bus, or on top of my bed while passing time. The weirdest place I've written... must be on the plane going to Beijing for a holiday.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?
Normally, I write on paper. It's the most natural for me. I tend to freeze up and lose my inspiration in front of the machine, so that's for clean-writing.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?
1,2,3...4...5,6...7...8...

Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas?

Yes – a small one in my purse and a bit larger notebook at home that serves as a "master file". Little yellow sticky notes (or larger ones) are great for jotting quick a phrase, a word, a description, and then you can just add them to your notebook where you want them to go without recopying.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?

If I am simply in the middle of chaos, sure I can write, blocking the world is not a problem. But if they are *my* people, kids, phone, etc, then no I can't go to my place and just write.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?

Sure, a couple of creative writing courses in college. More? I don't know. Depends on the course or workshop offering.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?

No.

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?

I write everywhere. Weirdest place? In the gallery of the Senate.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?

Notes are primarily on paper (ideas, maybe quick scene, words, phrases, bits of conversations, street names, etc) and "stories" in a more cohesive, liniar form are on the computer (laptop or desktop depending on location).

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?

Short stories that I've actually committed to paper – a dozen or more. Short stories committed to paper but lacking something, too many to count. Ideas – well, you see, I'm a bit nuts. I'm always narrating stories in my head, turning what I'm doing into a story or what someone else is doing into one...or something lame like trying to find the exact phrase that describes the way the air smells after rain or give a name to the color of brown of fallen pine needles. (Embarrassing, stuff to write down.)

Thanks!

Yui ^_^

Do you carry a notebook around with you to jot down ideas?

If I know I am going to stuck somewhere for a time with nothing else to do but sit I will try and remember to throw in a notebook. Have tried over the years to make it a ritual to take one with me always but never gets that programmed, and if need be I usually find something, anything, to write an idea down on if I think it worthwhile.

Can you write with distractions around you (people, kids, music, phone ringing etc)?

Sometimes, though I prefer a house to myself, nobody home or all in bed asleep is my perfect dream. Distractions on a large scale tend to get me frustrated and snappy. Can have music on at the perfect volume to not constrict thoughts, or the TV chattering in the background, but prefer nothingness for the rest.

Have you taken a course in writing, and if so, what, and do you intend doing more?

Nothing more formal than school. When I went back to finish high school as a single mother I had 3 teachers, one in particular who took it on as their mission to give me any tips they could. The one was an inspiration and admitted it was out of character for him, but that he loved my writing so much he wanted to do whatever he could to encourage me to continue professionally. LOL, all 3 spent a few months trying to convince me university was a waste as I should just write...don't know if I agree, but as it is not the first or last time I have been told this, and opportunity is now giving me the time and conditions in which to write and work at it seriously, I am taking it. Feel messages like that have a reason why they keep repeating themselve throughout 40 years of living and to ignore them is foolish. What will be will be.

Do you have an editor (partner, volunteer etc)?

No, though recently I have been running my stories by a few people of various natures and lifestyles to get feedback on what does and doesn't work for them etc. Learn heaps from other writers here as well which help.

Where do you write? Where is the weirdest place you have written?

Where I can and where I know I am going to have an expanse of uninterrupted time to do it. Unfortunately that seems to be limited to the living room at the moment. Can't think of any particular weird places I have written...perhaps nightclub or on the beach watching the surfers.

Do you write on paper or use your laptop/computer?

Used to swear for years paper was the only way I could write, but with increasing arthritus and other cramping in the fingers at times I have trained myself onto the computer so now I realise it has become my preferred and quickest form. :) Also find inspiration arrives through the screen at unusual moments.

How many stories/ideas are you working on at the moment?

Have several short stories ideas in my head, a couple of novels, and 2 non-fiction ideas I am playing with. The ones I am currently adding to on disk are 3 short pieces, one which is going to be rewritten into novel form, and a non-fiction.
