Loose definition of proof of concept is an initial prototype or experiment that provides proof of a point/theory etc...
In my time here I've advocated for simply write the story and worry about everything later, write the story you want to write, write whatever idea you have even if its out of your wheelhouse, and always make sure the story is your baby, your way, no matter what.
In spring of 2014 I published a story "That's What Friends Are For" First time category(to date the only story I have published there) and a first time romance between 18 year old long time best friends. A bit cliched, girl has a thing for the clueless guy who doesn't notice her because he'd caught up in image and she's a plain jane one of the guys type of girls.
I reversed the first time trope of the guy being experienced and it being the girl's first time. Instead she had a a couple of lovers and he was a virgin. This is where the "Um, oh, boy" came in from a few people I was kicking the idea around with. Because of the tried and true "Its always the girls first time"
Then I got the question of could I pull off a straight up sweet story? No dark back story, no train wreck, no fucking up a wet dream...pure sap and trying to do it from the POV of a teenage boy. I had done two romances prior, but both in mature and in each there was a tragic back story for one, or both characters, they both did well, but now I was going to go no dark, and far younger than characters I could relate to.
My response was, yeah, sure, I can do that. Why? Because the idea was strong in my head, the muse engaged and the challenge appealing. But having said that, when I put it out there as part of the first ever Earth Day contest I wasn't expecting much and remember the person who edited it saying they liked it, but like me, not sure what response I'd get being neither of us had ever tried the category.
The story took first place in the contest, I was happy with that, but over the next 8 years the story just kept going, constantly getting new favs, comments, feedback. It became a lightning in the bottle type of story, and even now keeps getting regular attention.
Last night the story hit 5000 favorites, its now the #10 most favorited story on Lit, and the highest ranking non incest story. It has garnered 28,347 votes 911 comment, including two today, 2.9 million views....score is 4.81 down from the winning score of 4.86 but its also endured years of my 'fan club' tagging it.
I never really put the story together with what I try to tell people, especially newer authors here, but yesterday it kind of clicked when I saw it hit the milestone 5k because I did have people telling me I was wasting my time, and it certainly was out of my box, but I figured screw it, don't know if you don't try.
So this is the proof of why you always should listen to the muse, and not the yo yo's and....for those obsessed with numbers? Sometimes you find them when you're not looking for them.
