My computer is about four months old. It is my first computer. It is a fast, powerful beastie, the one you would get if someone else was paying for it. It has Windows 98 SE.

I know nothing about computers. They scare me quite a bit. I'd be surprised if I use twenty percent of my computer's capabilities.

Still, use it I do, every day, and I find myself growing more and more comfortable with it. I've learned how to do a couple of things, and I'm happy as a clam.

A few days ago, I got a package from the company. Inside was my free upgrade to Windows ME. Now, my question is: should I install it?
If I can do all the things I need to do on Windows 98, is it worth upgrading to more new things I won't know how to use? How bad will this screw me up again?

I would appreciate and views of the subject. Thank you for your time.

When I installed mine.....

It ripped a fart - my Ctrl, Alt, Delete keys sprang from my keyboard and my screen went blue - a few seconds late the screen came back on and flashed "SUCKER!"

But I am the Sparkmeister and these things tend to happen to me.

Hey man, don't do it.

The only advantage I found is that ME comes with Mediaplayer 7.0. Go get that from your windows update site and leave the upgrade alone. It is also reported that ME shipped with 68,000 KNOWN bugs!! Go figure.

well I installed ME after it was out for about three weeks, and to me it starts up quicker, and logs on to the net quicker, and does have a few more good features that I have found so far.Oh and most importantly,I have had no problems if you do,you can always uninstall Me and go back to 98(I don't think you will loose any information either).

Just my two cents worth, the decision is yours.

A serious post by R Nitelight? And more than two lines long? What have you done with the real RN?

He's off with the little green men having his annual anal probe. Speaking of anal probes... *fanning self* :)

Sorry R Nitelight, I couldn't give you any advice on this subject.

Oliver Clozoff

Hey, I've made long, serious posts before. Remember the one about........
Wait. Give me a minute. Okay, how about the one revealing all the troubles I went through when my wife left me?
Wait. I'm not married. That must have been someone else.
All right. Here's one. Remember my post about my life-long battle with severe erectile disfunction?
On second thought, I believe I decided against making that post.
Now let me think......

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" -- Always good advice.

Seriously, unless there is something in ME that you need to accomplish what you use your computer for, there is no reason to upgrade.

You can always upgrade later if you find something that you need ME's capabilities for. The CD won't erase itself if it's not used.

Yeah RN and what about.....

Those really long posts about you and your super lover - Frank?

Oh. Sorry.

DON'T DO IT!!!

I have a friend who upgraded and has had nothing but trouble with the computer since doing it.

WARNING! Back away from ME! Far Away!

Nitelite, throw that free upgrade out the window. Windows 98 SE will do everything you need to do.

I have installed ME on several of our computers at work and every one of them had problems... Just quirky little bugs that will drive you crazy. We uninstalled it and they work fine.

I also installed it at home and my computer crashed. I got it restarted but then my internet connection wouldn't work. So I uninstalled it an now it works fine.

*An interesting tidbit about all Windows OSs, be it 95, 98 98SE or ME.

Take a clean computer, without anything on it. Repartition the drive, format it and install and uninstall any of the Window OSs 10 times.

Every install will be different than the others. Some will be good install, some will be great, but most will be crap. This is caused by the millions of obsolete code in the OS that Microsoft has never bothered to remove when they upgrade their system. So it is always possible that you just got a bad install.

Nitelite, I also did a doulbe take when I saw more than one line under your tag...but damn, it really was you...;)

Ah, Windows...

(Bill Gates, jumping up and down, waving arms):

"Hey! C'mon! Look at me! ME! Damn it, look at me! No--don't look over THERE--look at ME! Please? Look at ME! ME! Look! At! ME! ME! ME!" ...etc, ad nauseam, and the like.

I hate ME

I have never had more problems with a computer until I installed ME.:mad:The whole damned thing went blank on me several times, which made me have to resort to "phone techs" there's nothing worse than those guys who pretend they know what the problem is. I had to go through about 7 of them until I finally got one who really did know what was wrong. I got smart though, Now when I have to call in, I have his name and ext. number:cool:
