He's right about Playboy in the fifties. There were other "men's" magazines on the market but they were mostly about hunting and sports, etc. These were okay, of course,and I read them, but they had no sex at all. Esquire had some drawings of bosomy women but they were inferior to the photos in Playboy. There were also mags featuring first-person stories about dangerous and exciting deeds, some of which may have been true, but no sex.

But Playboy! Wow! I could sit in the bathroom with a centerfold, wanking, and dreaming about her. Even though I knew I could never, ever, ever actually rate somebody like her, I could dream, thinking my cock was going in and out of her instead of my hand. Hugh Hefner used to claim the mag was not pornography and did not arouse prurient interest. Bullshit! That's not a complaint, just an observation. Playboy was an important part of my misspent youth, especially the misspent part of it, and I was glad it was there. Even now, I would fight against any campaign to remove it from the stores.
