Rory, this is one of the few times I'm gonna disagree with you and side with Grandpa Boxwine.

Haley has done a masterful job at being a political chameleon: she's literally all things to everyone (not unlike Trump). She's a master of doublespeak like Trump. She simultaneously criticizes Trump and supports him.

The key to Nikki Haley is she is a personal favorite of Jared Kushner and his sweatshop magnate wife Ivanka. They're pushing tirelessly to have her replace Pence as VP on the 2020 ticket. Their logic is impeccable: "We've got the fundie vote locked down, who needs Pence? Getting a woman VP would do wonders for the fading GOP!"

Haley is also a minority female who does not throw in people's face the way Kamala Harris does
 
Nikki Haley is a formidable opponent. She's proven she can beat the good ol boys at their game too. Becoming Governor of South Carolina twice proved a lot and gives her a seat at the big national table.

The one thing she will have to overcome if she runs for President is what Jindal faced. Being an Indian-American in an otherwise lilly-white field of candidates going after rural/suburban white voters is a major challenge. She'll face much more seasoned candidates in a Presidential primary than one for Governor. Jindal ended up being conveniently forgotten about in a crowded field, especially one with Trump in it. I think she would be a much better candidate than he was though. A lot will depend on the political landscape at the time. South Carolina, for example, is becoming more blue with each election in part because of a much more diverse population. It's also becoming a younger electorate, as is most of the country.

The one thing that could hurt her in southern primaries is the Confederate flag issue. While she won a whole lot of praise here in South Carolina from both sides, there is a significant number of rural republicans/Trumpers that are still pissed about the flag removal from the State House grounds. Lots of Confederate flags fly in yards now (many right now with a Trump flag beneath it) that weren't before. Oh, she would have their vote in a November election, but likely not so much in a February primary.
 
The flag issue is a non-factor. Who's going to take an opposing position on that for starters? Further those good ole boys flying that flag in their yards and on the pick ups see that flag as a symbol of anti big federalism, not as racist or pro-slavery. If Haley runs against the "deep state" they're going to vote for her.
 
One more point as long as you insist on dragging race into everything. Jindal's ethnicity had nothing to do with his performance. It was all about recognition. Jindal didn't have national recognition and he was being defined by the press. He was handicapped right out of the starting gate.

Haley has received a LOT of prime time face time with her UN speeches. Unfiltered by the press and plenty of recognition. She wouldn't be starting out handicapped like Jindal was.

Jindal's appearance also hurt his chances because the Presidential race is as much a "beauty contest" as it is a national campaign for elected office.

Haley suffers no such handicap.
 
It is WAY TOO FUCKING SOON to think about the 2024 election. Fuck you for campaigning 5 years in advance.
 
I’ve been a fan of hers, but I don’t think she’s helped herself among Independents, particularly females, with this strong public embrace of Trump. She might have been well advised to soft pedal her support.
 
Nimrata definitely has the same knack John McCain had for getting the national media to portray her as something besides just another GOP ideologue.

But I'm guessing "loyally served in the Trump administration" will be a kiss of death for anyone with ambitions beyond just getting a Republican nomination.
