There are a couple of ducks that have been hanging around the neighborhood for a while. We have seen them chased by dogs and have seen the local kids throw things at them or chase them. A short while back they seemed to have taken up residence under a bush next to the patio.

My wife and I decided to be nice to them and placed a bowl filled with water out there for them. We also started keeping the ground a bit damp just to the side of the bushes. Occasionally I'll go out back and dig up some worms and place them on a plate under the bushes. When we have some fish I'll trim a bit off it before cooking it. (This is sectioned so the cats get some and the ducks get some.)

I also placed some boards in the bushes to give them some shelter. (Remind you of another couple of birds?)

Every now and then my wife and I will go out there with a coule of slices of bread for them.

Now whenever we go out in the yard we are greeted by a couple of ducks looking for food. They are friendly with my wife and myself to the point they allow us to scratch them under the beaks. If we're working in the yard we are observed.

Today I was pulling up some bushes in the front of the trailer and the ducks followed me out there. Everytime I pulled up a bush they closed in looking for bugs and worms and I had to wait for them to finish. If I tried to work before they were finished the male would strike at my hands. They were there the entire time I was out there.

Now what is funny is how they react to us and the cats. They seem to know the cats are enclosed and will waddle right up to the screen door and look in at the cats looking out at them. It's fun to watch.

If I'm not wearing a shirt or Im wearing a Tank Top they attack the Panther on my shoulder. If I'm wearing shorts the female attacks a large black mole just below my knee. (I've had dogs attack this as well. It seems they think it's a Tick or something.)

Oh and these are truly ugly ducks. (Muskovy) I call them the Koi of ducks. Yet they are clean ducks. They don't shit in their little shelter and they don't shit on the walkway. (I've seen them wander away from the shelter and then waddle back.)

If I disguise some cats as ducks, will you take over their feeding?

Puh-LEEEZE?

We have a lot of Muscovy ducks in Miami. They seem to be the default duck species for urban areas. Even in parking lots nowhere near any body of water, i sometimes see a little parade of ducklings marching along in single file behind their mom. Today's news had a fire-rescue team extracting a gaggle of baby ducklings from a storm drain out in the 'burbs.

The adults are unattractive, as you point out, thanks to those fleshy growths on their faces that look more turkey than duck. But the babies are cute as can be.

We have a mallard and named her Daisy. She's just returned for the third year in a row to her nest in our front yard. Each year she's laid her eggs there and hatched a family of cute little ducklings. Daisy has gotten to know me enough that she lets me pet her, until her babies hatch, then she plays protective mommy.

Once the ducks hatch, they leave the nest and take up residence in the creek out back. We give them duck feed whenever we see them come around, and they get on a schedule pretty quickly. They come around sunrise for breakfast and around 5:30-6pm for dinner. The babies are always shy for the first couple weeks, but soon after they get to know I'm the guy that gives them food, they waddle as fast as they can on their little webbed feet to come over and see me. They're not even afraid of my dog, she gets excited when they come but she doesn't try to catch them or anything.

The Canadian Geese on the other hand, are a different story. My dog knows it's her job to chase them off the property. As you say, the ducks are pretty clean, but the geese leave their droppings everywhere and these are big birds leaving BIG droppings.

Anyhow, when the ducklings get older they start coming around only once a day, then only a couple times a week, and finally they've gone south for Winter. Then Daisy shows up again usually in early March with a couple of Drake escorts and the whole thing begins again.

Here are some pictures of Daisy and her brood I took last year if you are interested.

Somehow, this thread title on this site just does evil things to my mind!

On the bright side, they're delicious!!!

:D

Reminds me of a chat room I stumbled upon way back when. Dolphin lovers, one guy strung them along and finally permission granted to ask a question - he came back with, "Do they taste like chicken?" Those Flipper lovers had no sense of humor. It was great theater!

This morning it was a bit chilly. I awoke early and checked the clock. It was 0500. It was cold in the place and after taking care of the reason I awoke I went back to bed. Surprisingly I couldn't fall back to sleep. I rolled over and climbed back out of bed and was surprised to find my wife doing the same thing. We decided to have a cup of coffee and relax for a bit then try to go back to bed.

We grabbed some coffee and headed for the patio. For here it was more than chilly, it was 45 degrees. We sat out there sipping our coffee wrapped in a couple of throws. Light was provided by two candle lanterns. We talked quietly but not much. We sat there and shivered when I heard a hiss from outside the screen.

When I looked here came one of the ducks. He waddled out and wandered into the yard for a minute or two before heading back. He stopped and looked in through the screen at us as though to ask what we were doing. Then he went back into the enclosure as we finished our coffee.

Later in the morning after we dragged our butts out of bed again we again headed to the patio. As we sat there again drinking coffee and unching our Fried Egg Sandwiches we watched as the ducks came out of their enclosure. They had a friend. All three of them came out of the enclosure and waddled down to the road and then down to the pond down the street. They were fun to watch. My wife and I headed in to take our showers and get dressed for the day. We had some things to take care of and were off.

When we got back there were the ducks waiting for us. All three of them. As we came out from under the carport they followed us to the Trailer. They stood around outside the door waiting for us, they knew what was coming and we didn't disappoint. We came out with several pieces of older bread and sat on the steps to feed them. They came right up to us. If we didn't toss out bread fast enough they would pluck at our pants legs or our fingers. I slid down even lower until I was sitting on the ground and one of the males actually hopped up onto my legs. He sat there and took the pieces of bread from my fingers. He seemed to enjoy this as did I. Even when the bread was gone he stayed there on my legs allowing me to scratch him under his bill and along his neck. It was kind of funny and I think he would have been happy to stay there for a lot longer except my butt was getting cold.

Later in the day my wife and I were relaxing on the patio when my wife told me to look at the door. When I did I started to laugh. Standing side by side outside the screen door were these three large ducks. They were looking in. On the inside of the door were four of our cats sitting there looking out at the ducks. The cats were calm as could be, they weren't trying to get to the ducks, they were just watching them. The ducks for their part weren't scared of the cats. It was fun to see.
