M 6.8 Earthquake

27km SSW of Blenheim, New Zealand (near Wellington)

New Zelanders (near Wellington) please check in and tell us how you are!

And many after-shocks, apparently - some felt at far north as Auckland's North Shore. But no casualties, no serious injuries.

Unfortunately, New Zealand is one of the most tectonically active landmasses in the world. From what I understand, it's one of the most beautiful countries to visit, but given the fact that it sees more earthquakes per year than even Japan, I'd rather not live there.

This quake was relatively minor, with no casualties reported as yet and only minimal property damage. So I hope all Kiwi Litsters are doing well.

A few years back my partner and I visited a friend at Lake Taupo. We went for a day trip to White Island but our NZ friend didn't come along - she thought we were crazy going to a volcano.

My partner: "You know this 45-km lake you're staying next to? Guess what made that." And very recently, in volcanic timescales.

White Island was beautiful, and I'm glad I went, but after an hour I was pretty glad to leave again. Like walking into a restless dragon's den.

Christchurch Cathedral that was so severely damaged in the last major earthquake is being re-built. Believe it or not, a cardboard one is a temporary replacement.

I wonder if this might be a pointer to building sciences ?

I was in Christchurch a month before the quake and loved the downtown--especially the gardens and college campus they had converted into a tradecraft center. Was really, really bummed that much of it got knocked down.
