New UK Thread

one last thing, Speshul91, a quote that is important for anyone, everyone:

No two autistic people are the same. Some people with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) are outgoing and gregarious, some shy and selectively mute. What unites everyone on the spectrum is that our needs, wants and desires are as essential as anyone else’s. An assumption that because we can’t necessarily express those needs in a way non-autistic people find palatable and understandable, doesn’t mean we don’t need to be understood.

Oh its definitely cooled down here.
Every tit with a strimmer or mower within a 5 mile radius seems to be giving it some.
Whatever happened to the day of rest?

a few more...

a view of the hill out back beyond the gardens and pastures

the little garden pond

the entire footprint of the house and front/back garden i lived in UKside fits a few times over just into the fenced veggie garden here. I know i'm really lucky; the chiggers, fire ants and even small black ants that bite all come with it free, too :DView attachment 2163343View attachment 2163346View attachment 2163347

i enjoy taking snaps with my phone and my tiny brit garden was pretty nice, too.

anyway, there are benefits and drawbacks wherever one lives, i guess. Remain everlastingly thankful the UK still has a National Health Service, seriously. It's insanely expensive over here. Make sure brits never lose it, despite various governments trying to ruin it!
I love your pond, look at all those Lilies. Do they flower? I have a small pond a fraction of the size of yours but I do now have Frogs and this year Pond Skates. I need to take a lot of the plants out and rationalise them, it's got a bit over grown. I'll probably cut them all back by about two thirds. If I could get newts then I'd be happy. I found one in the garden last winter but still none in the pond.

My garden is only a fraction of yours, typical English garden. BTW, since you left the amount of land required to build a house and provide a garden has reduced considerably. To get the same amount of living space they are building them on three floors.

This pond pic was taken early spring, it's considerably different now.

As much as I would like to say this next picture is part of my property, it isn't but it is only a short walk away.

so pretty! love that brick retaining wall and it's hard to beat english countryside (imo). brick walls and sunken gardens  reminds me of the secret garden!

your pond is cute but i bet it still takes some work keeping it tidy.... ours isn't aerated and mostly just serves as home to frogs, dragon flies, and the lilies..yeah, they flower and have to be thinned...and a drinking post for the dog and outdoors cats and wandering wildlife. It's shallow, too, so not good for fish in the heat or cold and i have to get masses of fallen leaves out every year. the fish live in the cow pond.

There is a second retaining wall, just were I was standing to take the pic. Both of which I built when we moved in. I did have fish and I tried introducing frogs but the fish just said yum yum caviar when they spawned. Once the last fish died the frogs took over. I like them better. I've tried Lilies but not had much success. My pond is about 24 inches deep. 150 gallons.

yeah, fish enjoy the frogspawn, lol

another thing over here in this climate, is the hot nights and the NOISY nights filled with frog song. not anything i'd ever experienced in the UK. You know some of those movies where the backtrack is all scrapes and scritches? Like that... frogs and cicadas.

wherabouts in the UK are you, roughly? it looks kind of south of london

A friend built a little wall and water feature and had newts moved in. I'm sure I'd kill anything with ignorance and we're in a rented anyway. That looks really pretty and restful
Thank you, it’s been 35 years in the making. It was new when we moved in and was just mud.

I live in Northampton. Never hear the frogs at night. We get retched seagulls here now, the big bastard Herring gulls, what a racket they make in the morning as it gets light. I’m about as far from the coast in any direction. They need to go home 😂 I’m about 70 miles north of London.

I have a pond, but no frogs or fish. The pond is frequently covered by salt spray from the sea. It has wriggly things - ideal for kids pond-dipping - and some great lilies but the salt deters most larger creatures except birds and foxes who drink from it.

Can you please recall the stupid seagulls. The clue is in the name sea not land.

Im having a right bugger here.Trying to fix the arm on my glasses with a fiddly screwdriver when I need my glasses to see what I'm doing.
I feel your pain. I was looking at buying a monocle. It could be worn on string and easily slips into a waistcoat pocket.

When I first moved to this seaside town there were few seagulls for two reasons:

1. the local sewage went straight into the sea by a short outfall and the fish didn't like that, and

2. There were few tourists eating fish and chips on the seafront because of 1.

Now the sea is clean and suitable for swimming, 1 and 2 no longer apply and we have thousands of seagulls. Drop a chip and they appear from everywhere.

Ooh Aah Cantona (remember him?) used to say that the gulls follow the fishing boats. But, as any farmer will tell you, Herring Gulls are just as happy following a plough. :)

It sounds like the coast here in stockport with the number of gulls that make a living on the local tip

'Red Leader, this is Maverick Two-Niner. Approaching Brighton Palace Pier. Beak set to ready. Over.'
They studied some gulls on a holiday resort and worked out that one of them was the ringleader and would gang up to mob tourists of there chips. I hope it croaked of heart disease.

Locally two seagulls were run over by cars in the last couple of months after trying to steal something inappropriate:

1. Tried to lift a half-pound cheeseburger in its box and failed before the car hit it.

2. Tried to eat a large quantity of candyfloss and got tangled in it.
