Smith's crisps were a classic example of a Company who thought their market was unassailable they probably had about 90% of all crisp sales in the UK. They became complacent and when Golden Wonder came along using modern marketing techniques and new flavours their sales were decimated. A lesson to us all, if you have something you value, look after it.In 1960 when I was traveling 1st class on a Dutch liner from the UK to Australia we had cordon bleu restaurant meals every day. By the time we got to Singapore, I wanted some plain food. After morning coffee at Raffles, I went to a cafe and had beans on toast and bought a jar of Marmite. That was the last for two years because only Vegemite was available in Australia at the time. I also missed Heinz Ketchup - only Rosella; and Branston pickle.
Crisp? I remember the Smith's crisps with an enclosed salt bag, from the original and the later relaunch which didn't last long.
Personally I prefer a faint scraping of fingernails in a hot bed with a mature spicy sausage in me hand.I prefer a faint scraping of marmite on hot toast with mature cheddar cheese!
Anyone remember shrimp flavoured skips? I loved those. Or salty pub crisps that made you want to drink more beer?
Yes, there were hedgehog-flavoured crisps but they weren't successful.Personally I prefer a faint scraping of fingernails in a hot bed with a mature spicy sausage in me hand.
Were there hedgehog crisps or is that a myth?
I like cold toast as it retains the crispiness, although the corners get pretty hard.I prefer a faint scraping of marmite on hot toast with mature cheddar cheese!

The packet was white if my memory serves me correctly.Yes, there were hedgehog-flavoured crisps but they weren't successful.
I didn't think they tasted like hedgehogs anyway and the flavour was unpopular.

Yum yum, loved skips and salt and vinegar chipsticks and barbecue hula hoops.I like cold toast as it retains the crispiness, although the corners get pretty hard.
Those shrimp ones were 'skips'...
My mam as a monthly treat for the family used to get prawn flavoured from M&S (Marks and Spencers). They were like tiny nets.
Sour cream, it sounds more thrilling.Sour cream and chive vs cheese and onion

So you'd request that flavour after a session? ..."bring me cheese and onion crisps"Cheese and onion all the way for me!

It might have been later that a company set up called Hedgehog Crisps, with orange and black packets. They didn't only sell hedgehog flavour but a percentage of proceeds went to St Tiggywinkle's hedgehog charity. Late 80s - I got a Save the Hedgehog sticker from them which is still on an old bag of mine. The packet was white if my memory serves me correctly.
Smith is a fairly common name. There is no connection. It might have been later that a company set up called Hedgehog Crisps, with orange and black packets. Were Smith's Crisps related to WH Smith's? It was the only place I ever saw them. Golden Wonder was the main brand until the 90s when Walkers took over and messed with the sacred colour code. I miss roast chicken flavour.
good to knowHealthier than a cigarette in any case
I guess I like cheese and onion crisps as I cannot get them here, Sandwiched between two slices of fresh white bread with lots of butter and a big cup of tea to wash it all down
I am very easy to please.

There is a advert for Tudor crisps that I'm trying to recall.
This one? There is a advert for Tudor crisps that I'm trying to recall.
me, too! a YUGE marmite fan. i think a lot of people made the mistake of spreading it too thickly first time they tasted it and it put them right off. thinly spread IS the way to goAbsolutely love it! Friends came from Newcastle to Pattaya for culture reasons and brought loads. I actually have marmite with a Chinese label in my fridge though it's tough to open when chilled.
A crumpet lathered with it....
skips were ok, salted chipsticks, and almost any hula hoops... originals were the best imo *nom*Yum yum, loved skips and salt and vinegar chipsticks and barbecue hula hoops.
