President Donald Trump, joined by representatives from the United Kingdom in the Oval Office, announced on Thursday that the two countries will cut back on trade barriers in the first major trade deal for the president.

The agreement will allow the United States to gain increased market access in the United Kingdom — the sixth-largest economy in the world — for billions of dollars worth of American exports, according to Trump. U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who spoke to the president over the phone, told Trump he is “really pleased” with the deal between the two allies. The final details are still being worked out, but Trump will keep some tariffs in place on British imports. The president emphasized that the deal would boost both countries’ industrial bases and help protect steel.

“Both countries have agreed that economic security is national security and will be working together as allies to ensure that we have a strong industrial base and appropriate export controls and protections for key technologies and industries like steel,” Trump said. “Steel was a big factor. Both countries will become stronger with steel.”

Shortly after announcing the deal, President Trump posted a chart on social media, showing that Britain’s tariffs on U.S. goods will drop to 1.8% while “reciprocal tariffs” on the United Kingdom will remain at 10%. Trump said other nations should not view the 10% tariff on Britain as a template for how the administration will negotiate future deals.

And what is different than the old deal?

And Trump still doesn’t understand the meaning of “reciprocal”. If the UK’s tariffs are 1.8% then ours should also be 1.8%, not 10%.

Fact check:

Trump’s chart says tariff revenue is “external revenue”. That is false. Tariffs are paid by importers and American consumers. The supposed $6 billion of tariff revenue comes out of the pockets of Americans.
So what is external revenue? There must be something that meets that description, or the IRS would not need "Internal" in its name.

First point: Britain has been negotiating a deal with the US since Brexit. This is not new, and it is small beer on the general scale of things.
Second point: what this indicates is how desperate both sides are. Two days ago Britain was not in the top priority group for doing a deal. It wasn't even in the second priority group. Britain was included in a third priority group. The fact that Britain's deal came before any country in either the first or the second priority group indicates that the Trump administration is so deperate to get a deal they can show to the people that they are prepared to ignore their priorities and go for the low-hanging fruit. Britain was also desperate. The government had stepped in to prevent the closure of a steelworks and really wanted to be able to sell that steel.
Third point: Britain signed a trade deal with India two days before Donny gave his approval. The market for the type of cars that Britain exports incfreased with that deal. There is a significant demand for Jaguars, Land Rover and Rolls Royces, a deal; that made those cars cheaper could only increase that demand making the US less of a priority.
In the end the deal was pretty small beer unless you are a British steel worker.

You’re celebrating a 10% tax on things Americans buy from the UK? Trump says it will take $6 billion from Americans and add it to the government coffers.

I’ve never celebrated a new tax, but you do you. (y)
That one's understanding of money rivals many toddlers' grasp.

US automakers ain’t happy.

Detroit Three automakers blast Trump UK trade deal

A group representing General Motors, Ford and Stellantis blasted President Donald Trump's trade deal announced with the United Kingdom, saying it would harm the U.S. auto sector.

British carmakers will be given a quota of 100,000 cars a year that can be sent to the United States at a 10% tariff rate, almost the total Britain exported last year, compared to 25% for Mexico and Canada and nearly all other countries.

"Under this deal, it will now be cheaper to import a UK vehicle with very little U.S. content than a USMCA compliant vehicle from Mexico or Canada that is half American parts," said the American Automotive Policy Council, which represents the Detroit Three automakers. "This hurts American automakers, suppliers, and auto workers."

This is the kind of thing that happens when Clowns are in charge.

Another Trump win. As expected. Let the leftie tears flow. 🤭😄🤣

"We are your largest partner. You're our largest partner. A lot of people don't know that."
-Trump to Theresa May in June 2019

People "didn't know that" because neither half of his claim was true. The UK's largest trade partner is Germany and the US' is China. And there's no reason to believe he's any more knowledgeable on the matter now than he was then.

The biggest question i have is whether this is any better than we had before.

It does seem that the UK is taking a bit of a hit, but the rest is shit we had in place before. So tariffs on shit we don't care about and free trade on stuff we do.

The level of incompetence in this administration is beyond logical comprehension. Most of the existing trade deals were decent for both parties. The few that were questionable could have been managed through other channels with foreign exchange valuations/management. If reshoring is important, say for national defense, subsidies to those domestic industries would make sense in addition to state and local government incentives. Tariffs only tax our own citizens.

the ripple coming to the economy for economic slowdown is going to hurt. The American economy is based on consumerism. If people aren't buying the economy is slowing down. Buckle up.

As a rabid Brexiteer, the most enjoyable aspect of the whole affair was the presence of Lord Fondlebum, also known as Peter Mandelson, the United Kingdom Ambassador to the United States. Standing to the left and behind President Trump, he was forced to witness the episode seething with anger the whole time.

He is the ultimate Euro-lizard, the European Union is the pluperfect institution for insiders like him. But he knows that any trade deal, not just with the United States but also with India earlier in the week, is a further barrier to the return of the U K to the EU. Sorry bumboy time for you to retire hurt to Brussels!Bye Bye !

It's what he always says when he has either only just learned something most Americans have known since elementary school (i.e. "A lot of people don't know, Lincoln was a Republican"), or when he pulls something patently false out of his ear as he did on that occasion with PM May.
