Do some research. For free, you can peruse our BDSM Library, reading through those topics and threads that tweak your antennae. That will help give you an idea where your interests lie. Read threads here in Talk.

There are also a number of good books regarding the BDSM culture: The New Topping Book; The New Bottoming Book; The Loving Dominant; Screw The Roses, Send Me the Thorns; and a number of others that I'm sure Stella or someone else will recommend.
