New Story Reviews (volunteers welcome!)

This is why I'll never review here. God help the soul that doesn't like something written by an AH author (any AH author, I'm not singling anyone out).

I hope he didn't mean it that way. But I understand if you think so. I don't agree with her review and think it was a little harsh, but I don't want to discourage people from giving constructive criticism, including of my work. Some of my older stuff clearly needed it.

Min, I think the issue was more that it didn't read like a review. The first one did. However, the review of Aurora's came across more as... well I don't know what but definitely not as a review (imo). There was not one constructive piece of information in the whole thing.

The poems review thread also has a thread where reviews and chit chat can take place to keep the review thread less cluttered. However... that may be to late here, so I'm curious if the litster that had posted about starting a thread with just the reviews would still be willing to do that? I think it could be a good idea. Then reviews could be placed here and they could do the "Full Review Thread" making it so only the stories are placed there. :)

okay, I read that twice and I still have to say...huh?

I really hope you don't mean that. Constructive criticism should be welcomed not compained about. If someone doesn't like my work, they are more than welcome to post it here, or on my story page or send me an email. I'd rather that than just bad votes not explaining the reasoning for them.

*chuckle* I do that often.

The Poem Forum has two threads... one is the thread where they post the poems they review like we do here.

The other is called keeping the review thread clean and other "chit-chat" that is where people go and give thanks to the reviewers if they are inclined as well as comment or answer questions about the reviewers likes/dislikes.

The point is not whether you like what an author has written, but at least be constructive in your criticism. I have no problem being told my work sucks, just tell me why it sucks.

What Shostakovitch said to Stalin

OK, I wasn’t going to, but I suppose I’d better break the habit of a lifetime and explain myself. BTW the ‘KEEP THE REVIEW THREAD CLEAN’ idea is an excellent one and would provide a more appropriate place for such exegeses as this.

1. I genuinely thought that AB’s piece was a (rather clever and subtle) joke when I read it, and reviewed it in that spirit – in a consciously dialectical style, thinking it beyond mere ‘description’. Obviously, I see now, it was meant to be serious. Amazing! I was married to a (rather lovely) American and my spouse (a person of impeccable working class credentials) never had any problems in finding out how to ‘go abroad’. There was a problem about going into pubs and demanding of the staff there ‘Gimme a beer,’ and getting the icy reply: ‘We have 100 kinds of beer; which particular one were you considering?’ while I cringed in embarrassment – but this wasn’t covered by the article anyway.

2. Why did I think it a joke? Well, anyone vulgar enough to behave badly abroad (e.g. GWB) – and we too, as AB correctly points out, have plenty enough of them – wouldn’t read such a thing anyway. And, of course, I look for irony everywhere. I just forgot: you guys don’t have the gene.

3. AB thought I was accusing her/him of plagiarism. That was not my intention and I want to apologise deeply for giving that impression. In fact, as I have indicated, I wanted to imply that she/he was cleverly parodying the site I referred to.

4. As to ranting, yes, all reviews should be rants. Rants mean you FEEL STRONGLY. Often I look at stories on this site (and indeed elsewhere) and think ‘what a load of bollocks.’ That hardly constitutes a review and, as with the television, no one’s making you watch. Switch off. I never vote except with 4’s and 5’s; no point. Very, very occasionally I might find a story deeply offensive, but it is not my place to judge – especially on a site devoted to free expression; I might just leave a comment in such a case, but probably not. Ranting and ranters are great. The greatest Englishman who ever lived was Abiezer Coppe (check him out on Google) who said ‘the only heaven is women; the only hell is marriage.’ Abiezer was a Ranter.

That's exactly what I'm doing with you now. Have a nice day. Off to the Ignore list you go. I don't have the time or patience for this shit. Your "review" wasn't the least bit constructive, on the contrary. It was just a bunch of insults.

Sci Fi and Fantasy

I know it's not my day to review, but I got hooked into this little story and had a great time with it. It's a 4 Lit page read, and it could have used a little more editing and polish, but I really, really enjoyed the whole premise. It's fun, fluffy, and has a really great sense of humor to it.

Skipping off to read more now.

I should have just edited my last comment, but oh well..

How to Pick Up Chicks in 14 Departments

*clears throat* I think I may have actually overheard my husband giving a similar spiel to this one to my younger brother. *grins* Very much a guy's perspective- here's the way it is, I'm only going to tell you once, so you better listen good. I found it highly amusing, as did everyone else apparently. I will say that if you are a *goes ahead and shoots self in foot to save anyone else the trouble* very feminine woman, who doesn't understand how the male mind usually works, you may have trouble following this. I know my stepmother wouldn't understand it. But, if you have a little bit of tomboy in you, or just hang out with the guys enough to be treated as one of them, you'll completely get it. It's a great pick me up. (no punnage intended)

Interracial Love
This was amusing, in a lot of ways. I have a feeling that it would have been a hell of a lot funnier if I had read the first chapter, but this was definitely worth the read. Two short Lit pages, an da few technical errors, but the writing is fast-paced, witty, and really engaging. Plenty of UST (unresolved sexual tension) and it's working its way towards a good first encounter. A solidly amusing read for those who like satirical and witty romance with plenty of sparks.

Seasons of the Heart: Fall Ch. 1
yourlittledominatrix
Very short and sweet intro to the start of a romance between a college student and her professor. I'm going to keep an eye on it, and see where it goes. I would have personally preferred a little more detail to both the characters, and the atmosphere, but it's good writing, with very few sticking points and a very nice flow.

Not Perfect Wives

I don't know whetehr I liked this story or not. It's... cynical? Yeah, cynical, but the way it's told is interesting, and well done. I was also left torn between wanting to give the poor guy a hug and smacking him with something heavy. Then again, that is the point, right? To stir a reaction? If so... very well done.

You're welcome, lol....

And I think I like my new nickname. :D Firefly just has a certain ring to it.

Hmmm....what was it about the husband that gave you such mixed feelings, Falling?

Sev: It was the way he talked about women, like he hated them, but they were necessary. It (and please, forgive me for using this horrid analogy) reminded me of how a recovering anorexic talks about food. Something that she detests, has nothing but contempt for, but it's a necessity of life. I also didn't think it was possible for someone to have a more cynical opinion of women than I do... ah, well, vanity, thy name is self.

Tx: I didn't mind, lol... I was accused more than once of being a butterfly, so firefly makes me giggle.

Oh, and BUMP this thread upwards before everyone forgets it.

Friday's Reviews

75 new stories today, and a few How-To Contest entries among them worth mentioning as well. Here’s what caught my eye:

Loving in Silence by RedHairedandFriendly is an interesting concept--a deaf couple embarking on the possibility of a threesome. I'm not sure where this is going, but I'm hoping that their deafness becomes integral to the plot somehow...

Dharma Tramp: Love and Rockets by Mistress Jett is a "letter was written from one punk girl to another." It's a fantastic characterization in a short amount of time, worth a look, if for nothing else than to experience a different way of living in and seeing the world...

Get Lucky & Score on Your Way Home by NeonLyte is a humorous look at how to “get lucky” with lots of hilarious statistics and an interesting approach to getting laid. Definitely will give you a laugh.

The Art of Writing Smut is a synthesis of what makes smut stories… well, smutty. Written by the AH’s own smut-master, Boxlicker101, it’s really very good general advice for those who love to write stroke.

That's all for today from me. If I missed any that you really enjoyed, feel free to mention them. Don't forget to go Read, Comment and Vote!

Have a wonderful day.

Point of No Return
Author -Sadie26-
Category: NonConsent/Reluctance
My thoughts: My thoughts are always mixed on stories in this category. Some go the traditional route of a true 'rape' story, others give way to the woman's body giving into the attacker or attackers, other times we find out that it is the spouse doing the attacking or even the spouse set it up. The other does a nice job of setting up the suspence of the story. I was pulled into the web of 'it was a dark and stormy night' very quick. I however was slightly disappointed that as soon as the actual 'action' of the category came to life the story ended fairly fast. I feel that this story could have been longer if it had been panned out more... What was the woman thinking, feeling? How was her husband going to react? This could easily have been shaped up into something super suspenseful if it had been given alittle more time to 'cook'.

Killing Loneliness
Author: FallingToFly
Category: Celebrities
My thoughts: This story caught my eye because of the blurb that the author put after the title on the Lit page. I love 'Wicked Game' by Chris Isaac. Well I was confused I suppose. I don't know the celebrities involved except to say that I came to understand that it was a band. Those involved in the sexual play of this story were two men. I suppose if I knew who the band was that would have made it easier for me to see before I read the entire story but since I didn't I innocently walked into a 'gay male' story embedded within a 'celebrity' story. I understood to a point the struggle between the two men but the ending left me completely confused and wishing that I had more information.

Say It Isn't So
Author: Omega12
Category: Loving Wives
My thoughts: Ahh the kiss of death category. There are really only a few kinds of stories in this group: Faithful wives, Cheating Wives that their spouses don't know about, Cheating Wives that their spouses know about it, and the unfaithful wife because one of the two of them set it up on purpose (to impregnate the wife, to pay off a debt, to swing) or by accident (one or the other cheated and this is revenge). Yes this story fits into one of those categories. I can see a part two coming from this story by the ending. I am not sure if I agree with how it played out however it was well written. I believe that this author has a solid basis for more chapters from this start.

A Truly Wonderful Man
Author: Samuelx
Category: Group Sex
My thoughts: I happen to like in this story that the characters in it used a condom during their play. I understand this is all fantasy and make believe, but I also believe that we as authors are responsible at times for setting an example and if that means that in our stories we talk about using condoms and birth control then so be it. "Gay sex is a man's world and I was just a visitor." That has to be my favorite line of the story because it is so utterly true of straight women that get involved with gay or bisexual men. I enjoyed this story like a quick hot romp in the sack. It was fun and it stayed true to what it was, a story meant to tease, please, and tantalize.

Lust in the Locker Room
Author: smj54ap
Category: Lesbian Sex
My thoughts: I always like a good lesbian story, I think in some part because I write them so miserably. *grins* I enjoyed this story for several reasons. First of which was the fact that the story was written well. It had an actual plot, the characters were poeple that you could believe truly exist and the sexual interlude was something nive and lifht enough to be sensual but hot enough to make a reader warmed by the reading. I cannot wait until this author writes the second installment of this story.

Dharma Tramp: Aleks
Author: MistressJett
Category: Erotic Couplings
My thoughts: I enjoyed the ethinic view of this story. I also enjoyed the flavor of 'the real story' that it contained as well. Again, this was another quick romp through the hay that I enjoyed. There was something there are was sweet, nice and alittle bit daring for all of us that always wanted to wander overseas and have a wild fling. I had a smile on my face at the end of the reading.

A Great Trip
Author: Janamarie
Category: Incest/Taboo
My thoughts: I felt badly as I read this story and sort of grumbled. The author bounced between past and present tense. I found myself having to go back and reread several different parts to figure out where I was. I enjoyed the premise of the story and it was an interesting read. I know that I am guilty of grammar faux paus at times but ones like this make a story hard to read. The POV also changed in the story, where it would move from the characters speaking amongst themselfs to the characters speaking to the readership. If one can get past those items then they will find an enjoyable read.

Slut Wife
Author: ScotsHighlander
Category: Loving Wives
My thoughts: Hot, wet, wild and a quicky. If you want a happy stroke story or caress fiction as one of my favorites calls it this is the story for you. I enjoyed it as it made my toes tingle.

How to Pick up Chicks in 14 Departments
Author: TxRad
Category: How To
My thoughts: I honestly had a good giggle with this one. The author was blunt and to the point about women and honestly what men are thinking while they watch a woman shop. Then again I was laughing so hard when I reached the end of the piece I had tears running down my face. If women truly want a real view of how man view us women while we are wandering around picking up our tampons then this is definitely the article to read

Ah, okay. That makes sense. I can't imagine having such a view of either sex, so I can see why you wouldn't like that.

Hi guys - we were doing some reviews of our own and bumped into this thread. Well done and please keep up the great work.

Also while on feedback. I have noticed some pest has been terrorising the BDSM writers with comments and feedback that can only be described as inhuman.

Example "He should punch the bitches teeth out and send her back to her whimpy husband"

I have been reporting the stuff to the moderators as I spot it, but curious if the other genres have been getting this rubbish, or is this lunatic just staying in BDSM

Thanks.......The Pilot

Thanks, Indian, for the heads up. And an aside... I just realized we're supposed to put all aside in the New Story Reviews? thread. Lizzy, I am putting something in there for you. :D Nothing bad, I promise.
