Hello there everybody, I'm Bugsy and I am a 'wanna-be' author!

I've been having a browse around and have already found ALOT of useful information aimed at amateur authors.

I appreciate any help, support and/or guidance you lovely people may offer.
Thank you!

Alot means nothing because it is not a word in the English language and therefore should not to be used.

Not busting your chops, its just a mistake I made for years.

Allot - to allocate, distribute, etc
A lot - many, plenty of something

Sometimes people get critical due to grammar. Try your best to roll with it and improve.

A welcome  for the little newbie from the good little witch.

Welcome to the pistachio Ranch, Bugsy, where the unusual is usual, the bizarre is normal, the sexually perverted is commonplace, morality is relative (usually a crazy aunt who sings hymns to herself), kinky is amusing, gender confusion is routine, underage sex is forbidden but overage sex is and a good time is had by all.

Don't feed the trolls, stay behind the yellow line, submit nude photos of yourself when you reach 100 posts and never pick up the soap no matter how politely you're asked to do so.

Above all, have fun. :D

Hullo! I started writing on-line about a year ago and have had the best fun, met some fascinating people and read a lot of amazing stuff as well as being able to share my writing and get great feedback.
I recently started a blogpost where I'm collecting writing about writing, you might find some helpful info there too. Give me some feedback if you think there are ways I can develop it.

Welcome to the madhouse. Prepare your flame and troll proof underwear carefully and never, I mean never, post in Loving Wives until you have very thick skin. There is an AH library as a sticky at the top of the main page her in the AH. some very good information there. There are quite a few How-To's on writing in the How_To section of the stories list.

Above all, do not be afraid of asking questions. Most people here are very good about answering them.

And last but not least, Tread the General Board at your own risk and alwasy wear a hazmat suit. ;)

Check out the post above for more good places to find writterly information. And welcome aboard if I have said so before.

Oh yes, I almost forgot. You will find the smilies to the right side of the posting box and there is a (More) for you guessed it, more smilies.

If you use the quick reply at the bottom of the page I don't think you have the smilie option.

The American Heritage Book of English Usage states that “alot is still considered an error in print” but notes that standard words have formed by fusion of the article with a noun, such as another and awhile, and suggests the possibility that alot may like them eventually enter standard usage.

The Cambridge Guide to English Usage also compares alot to awhile. It states alot to be “still regarded as nonstandard” and notes 50 appearances in the British National Corpus, “almost entirely from three sources: e-mail, TV autocue data, and TV newscripts.” It suggests that some usages of alot in typewritten use are to be considered merely typos of the standard a lot though its appearance in handwriting and typescript is “more significant, as the shadow of things to come.”

I say go ahead and use "alot" whenever you like Bugsy. It might not officially exist now, but it will one day. :D

And welcome to Lit.

Welcome! From another wanna-be author.

Write what you love and never fear to share it. You just might be pleasantly surprised in how readers react.

I really hope you don't apply that logic to stoplights.

"It may be red now but very soon it will be green. I shall proceed." ;)

I use "alot as a vernacular word, in dialogue. And as far as I'm concerned posting here is dialogue. So, I use alot once in a while...
;)

"Red means stop. Green means go. Yellow means go very fast."

Jeff Bridges, I think? In the movie "Starman." He was just a baby!

Some very interesting replies here ;)

Never use "alot" again: Check

Now for another question thats been bugging me for a while.
Author Name/Username?

Is there anything to picking an Author name? I only ask because I'd like to be known as something a tad more sophisticated than Bugsy.
(Assuming I start writing stories I'd likely start a new account)

name of your first pet combined with your mother's maiden name. :D

... or is that the pornstar name thing?

and what's wrong with bugsy? there are some strange ones out there as it is, bugsy is in no way inappropriate.

beware Loving Wives, it can get scary in there ... but fun too. ;)

Perhaps you're right. I should stick with what I know :p

As for loving wives, after watching my parents go through a divorce I tend to stay away from wives as a general rule.
If I don't venture into 'No Man's Land' I wont lose what is precious to me!

be brave. venture forth and grow.

I use the same name as I do when I publish elsewhere on the net, including for work I charge for and when I work on my blogs. You may want to consider using a more 'ordinary' name to help create an identity associated with work you are writing elsewhere.
