Dear Josh:
We've been called all three, and to be honest, we always assumed they meant the same thing. However, according to the cool kids, there are differences.
Official definitions for nerd, geek, and dork each use the words "inept" and "foolish." Nerds have the added distinction of being "unattractive." Ouch. While it's hard to argue with the dictionary, we sought out definitions from the Internet at large.

According to Whatis.com, nerds are people of above-average intelligence who place little importance on their appearance. Nerds are often aware of their status, but they don't mind. In fact, many take pride in the putdown, as it means they're smart and not wrapped up in superficial worries.

Geek is a more specific term. Back in the day, geeks worked at carnivals, and (according to the dictionary) "bit the heads off live chickens." Thankfully, the term now has a different connotation. Like nerds, geeks are smart, but they tend to focus more on technology. As Urban Dictionary explains, these are the people you make fun of in high school and later work for as an adult.

Being called a "dork" is the biggest insult of the three. There's no way you can spin it into something positive. After all, even the dictionary writes that dorks are "stupid" people. And to make matters worse, dorks assume they're cool. Oh, and they smell, too.

So, to sum things up, if someone calls you a geek or a nerd, thank them. If someone calls you a dork, consider going back to school and investing in some new deodorant.

I'm most definitely a nerd then, moreso a few years ago than now (i'm getting more into my looks working out and such) but of the three that describes me

So what is up with this new category of Dwarf Planets? Does Pluto now need to grow a beard? Drink more ale? Use an axe?

Argh. These are the same scientists who argue passionatly about whether a tomato is a fruit or a vegetable.

Seriously though, who cares?

Pluto has a moon.
Charon? I don't remember.
Pluto orbits our star; Sol.
Its orbit is, more or less, stable, and it hasn't run into any major planets yet.

Sure as hell sounds like a planet to me.

If size really is that big an issue, (Insert witty innuendo here) then why don't we just make another scale, like the Solmev scale?

I don't think that size was the main determinant in the decision, though the "does it have enough mass to form a roughly spherical shape" question did come into play. Apparently, the big criteria was its orbit. One of the problems was that Pluto's orbit is directly and strongly influenced by Neptune. That and it didn't have enough Oomph to clear its orbit of the big material (then again, neither does the Earth, for that matter).

Looks like there's a nerd fight among the astronomers over how folks were allowed to vote. Apparently only 4 percent of all the world's astronomers voted because that's all that attended that conference on that day.

Yes, that's certainly pertinent.
Where as all the other planets seem to orbit on the same horizontal plane, Pluto swings out on a signifigent angle.

I still think we can make an exception.

Yeah, one thing that many nerds feel strongly about, according to my friends in the sci-fi club, is parliamentary procedure. I suppose it has to do with things having a proper order being a concept that would appeal well to someone heavily involved in science or math.

That said, the sci-fi club I was in was notorious for it's riotous, disorganized, chaotic method of doing things. We have also been known, from time to time, to pull some creative pranks on other organizations (including one infamous one that we did on accident).

Incidentally, per the nerd/geek/dork distinction, I'm a self-identified Geek. I always interpreted Geeks as being similar to nerds, but with more concern for social interaction. A Dork has the worst qualities of a nerd or geek, but none of the benefits. Dorks are the guys Geeks and Nerds ostracize.

So, this week I just started playing around in the photolab at my new school. Anybody else big into photogaphy (or modeling)?

Incidentally, ladies, if you want to do some nude B&W portraits, I CAN develop and scan my own film for maximum discretion.

I try to resist labelling myself. Nerd is the best fit for me, I guess, but it's a bit of a misnomer too - I'm not a gamer and my computer knowledge is limited to how to use Word and surf the internet. But I am smart, and watch way too many movies, and read a lot, and do geeky things. However, I'm a huge sports fan too.

I'm sure I've said this before, but I always feel a compulsion to repeat it.

there is this nerdy guy at work that I really like.. he's a sci-fi, D&D player, shy drummer who I would love to hang out with outside of work... but I don't know how to ask, or what to really say to him....
I am definately the type to come on to a guy without issues.. but I am pretty sure this one would scare away b/c he is really really shy..

Take it slow...maybe chat him up about some of his "nerd" interests...personally, I almost always get at least slightly turned on if I meet a girls who's into gaming, etc. Once he sees you're OK with his "oddities," he should open up a bit.

Simple; get him talking.
You have to get him comfortable in the conversation, and then simply ask questions about his interests. Be interested. Express your desire to learn, or at least listen to him about his hobbies.

To be fair, your AV looks very intelligent!

But yeah, get him into a conversation on a topic he's comfortable with, but preferably one you can also take part in. Does he have any favorite TV shows or books? Maybe you've read some of them? Maybe you have some he can try? Etc.

I use a Pentax Spotmatic and a Canon Rebel SII (both are 35mm film cameras). The Spotmatic I like more, thanks to it's VERY nice 50mm/1:1.4 SMC Takumar automatic screwmount lens. We're talking top of the line premium glass here. My Canon Rebel has more automated features, not to mention a hotshoe for a flash (the Spotmatic requires me to use a sync cable for flash, which can be a pain to set up).

Trying to save up my mony for a Canon 20D digital SLR camera though.

<giggles> im still using my 35mm Minolta Manual haha... i have a digital but... i cant bring myself to use it for anything other than friendly photo;s i enjoy my time in the dark room to much...

And as Far as that Guy goes Micro... Talking to him about His interests is a fine idea but make sure he knows about you as well... It be a mistake to let him do all the talking and not get to find out how intellegent im sure you are... ( though boobs are very nice as well ) dont let ur breats do the talking for u hehe...I dated an exteremyl anti social/shy geek for about 3 years ... so i guess that qualify's me to give advice lol

Like it or not, that's one of hte first things he's going to notice. Nerd though he may be, he's also a guy and that's how guys are wired. Rest assured, as you both get to know each other better, he'll also come to appreciate your intelligence and wit.
