Nerd Hook Up Thread

No, you have to ask her out to the "Restaurant at the End of the Universe" or something like that :p

and buy her a pan-galactic gargle blaster in case the talking cow offering itself up for dinner isn't available?

A nerd thread! How did I miss this for the last week! LOL.

I confess, I am a total geek. I am pretty much into everything that can be considered nerdy: Science, science fiction, Star Trek, Star Wars, video games, comics, anime, manga, computers, Harry Potter, roleplaying games, etc.

The only thing about me that is not geeky is that I am not very good with math. I understand the principles and explanations of theoretical physics, but I am useless when it comes to all the letters and numbers and symbols on the blackboard. I am like Michael Faraday in that I can explain and understand how something works, but I couldn't write out the equations. I understand the laws of physics through observation rather than reading the language of mathematics.

Anyway, just wanted to pop in and show some nerd love.

Good Morning fellow nerds!

I hope everyone is having a great start to their weekend!

Beyond our two resident sex show participants (no I am not complaining) has anyone met someone new they otherwise would not have met?

mornin fellow nerds... i had a long night of drinking i dont know why im up so effing early

I was browsing and must say, I like this thread!

I am a nerd. Always have been. From the time of my earliest memories, I have loved science fiction. I started with Star Wars and Transformers as a kid (along with the usual kid's shows, Sesame Street, etc.) and while I have always loved the original trilogy of Star Wars, I have expanded my horizons. I branched out into Star Trek, Babylon 5, Lord of the Rings, and many more, although Lord of the Rings is one of my favorites, as I started with that back before I was in kindergarten. One particular nerd moment happened in grade 2 or 3, when for a school writing project I wrote a story about Captain Picard's first ship, the Stargazer.

I had horrible hand-eye coordination, which my teacher suggested my parents get an NES to fix. I've been playing video games since. I played sports throughout my school years, but never anything popular other than hockey when I was younger, but then, everybody around here plays hockey when they're that age. In high school I played rugby, which means my team got shit for equipment, but it was fun.

During my younger years I branched out into anime, science fiction and fantasy books, RPG's, all sorts of video games, making electronic music, playing Starcraft, and so many other pursuits. I have to admit though, because of me moving schools so much (problems with teachers and other students) I never was able to have a girlfriend, really. I had one relationship when I was 16 (which ended because of physical distance, but we remain friends to this day) but otherwise I never had a girlfriend in school.

Since school I've also become a writer, I've written a few minor screenplays and am working on a novel currently. I've worked as over-the-phone tech support, done lots of mindless labour.

I've had some relationships since the first, but only a few long-term ones that didn't pan out. Anyway, glad to see a thread like this, and being single I'd be happy to take a girl out.

I could use lines like: I’m attracted to you so strongly, scientists will have to develop a fifth fundamental force.

I always get really shy and have no idea what to say when it comes to messaging someone. I don't want to sound like an idiot or desperate so I just hardly say hi to anyone first. Slowly getting over that though. I have been here a very long time and only have had like 30 PM's. Not that I mind I just have to get over the shyness. See I knew I should have got on here when I was drunk yesterday. I would have met all sorts of people. Hope everyone's afternoon is going well...

Other than Pen, I have met one new guy, I've started writing with another guy I was a bit in contact with months ago and then there's another guy who I suspect wrote me partly due to this thread but it isn't confirmed ;)
On top of that, I also know two of the other guys who post in this thread but the relationship with them haven't been changed by this thread.

Well I can't speak for all the females, but I know what gets me excited to respond to a PM.

I mean just a straight "Hi" or "Hello" or a one line greeting is kind of daunting to receive. It doesn't leave alot of room to expand on or start an actual conversation. It also comes off as lazy, canned, or spamish.

For someone like me I have a filled out profile, lots of posting history, so it shouldn't be that hard to kind of get to know me before you PM me.

Once you've done abit of looking and decide you actually want to talk to me then drop me a PM.

The actual message should let me know why your interested in talking to me and tell me abit about yourself. It doesn't have to be a novel, but at least something I can comment back on or that will prompt me to ask questions.

I don't know if that helps, but just some friendly tips :)

Thank you very much for the tips. My profile is filled out so good there. I might have struggled in what to put up there but it is filled out. As far as post history goes I am working on getting more of that. And I so agree with you on the giving something to write back with. Hard to write back to hi i like you. I mean I never have received that but it would be very hard to start a conversation off with that...

Guys do have it quite hard, its difficult to write a pm that doesn't make you like either an idiot or like you're trying too hard. Especially when you also have to compete with the other guys for a woman's attention..its a bit like getting a job really.

My advice, would actually be to try and talk to someone on the threads before PMing then; I think that way we know that you haven't just singled us out and that you're not just spamming PMs to all the girls.

Haha some fair advice in here :)

It's funny, I'm the complete opposite of normal when it comes to talking to people. In real life, I manage to strike up a conversation just fine, but I get shy online XD

As for this thread, I haven't really met anyone out of here, but then again I've only really met a couple people on Lit before receding back to lurking >.>;

Saturday night / Sunday morning shout out for anyone who's possibly keen on having some fun conversation, perhaps?
