Nerd Hook Up Thread

Hello nerds. I recently read a book called "Ready Player One" by Ernest Cline, its a sci fi book that centres heavily around gaming. Anyone who likes gaming should find it a really good read ;)

Going into the badlands to do some photography tomorrow. Then going to the movies with my wife saturday evening.

You?
That sounds nice :)

I have some awesome plans to start writing my thesis  A sad weekend indeed.

Deepwood I think, I've not logged in in nearly a month, been too busy with other things. How about you?

Hm. Cannot see that server. I'm on Gelidra. But they kind of transformed the game into a real grindfest lately. Not sure if it's still worth playing.

Isn't that all MMOs though?

I don't have any max level toons yet. My highest is a 52 rogue. I've not been dedicating a lot of time to it. It's nice that it's free so I don't feel pressured to play it, so I take a very casual approach.

Not sure if I am a TRUE Nerd... I have 6 computers, XP, 7 and 8 and Macbook pro and an iPhone and iPad. Xbox, Wii, PS2. Was in radio for over 30 yrs. Worked in computers back in the DOS days.

Ever miss the ability to close Windows entirely and work just in a DOS environment?

I used to rather enjoy the ability to work with programs and things that nobody else in my household could simply because they only knew Windows.

That and access bulliten board systems by dialling up another computer directly to play door games that were all text.

My youth was the sound of a 2400 bps modem connecting to other computers and early internet.

Guess I might as well throw my hat in the ring on the DOS side. Still have a fully functional Amstrad PC6400 running DOS (3.21). Have a Novel 2.1 Server that still runs and can manage about 5 to 10 users. Cut my teeth programming in machine language and in a little used language called FORTH. Then moved on to making PC's talk to mini and main-frame computers and eventually to networking with a serial network product called LANLink (any of these sound familiar).

Now I manage multiple TCP/IP LAN's and WAN's. Do a lot of work from my home. Still like to dabble in writing code (hate GUI interfaces). Prefer to work in Linux at the console level, however, I tend to get rusty and have to refer to a cheat sheet often since most of my work in just in the communications side of networks. Loved the old days when you had to actually "know" something to make computers talk to each other and run programs efficiently.

However, with all due respect, being a nerd and a jock are not mutually exclusive. Have worked as a bouncer and bodyguard in my spare time (been compared to Terry Bolea in looks) and still play amateur sports (reasonably well) even though the calendar says I should be washed up.

Your nerd credentials are hanging by a thread

Well, I do consider myself more of a geek than a nerd. You know, all that nerdy fun plus actually functioning with real 3D people
However, this thread is actually maked for nerds and nerd-lovers. And I am definitely the latter. And I could definitely kick your ass in Sonic II (mainly because you'd be distracted by my boobies)

Yes you probably would kick my ass then - not just in Sonic II

Guess I'll toss my name into the hat here.

I am a nerd but it's hard to classify me. One of my passions in life is comic books. A stranger at a local drug store gave me one when I was three due to one of the cartoons that aired at the time. That led to a love of books, video games, roleplaying games, and many other things.

To list all the things I'm a fan of would be quite staggering. Needless to say Nerd or Geek, I'm probably one of these things if not both. To be honest I never cared to learn about the difference between the two. When you're called both as a taunt you just stop caring about whatever differences are between them. Eventually you just say you're yourself. Which is what I did.
