Need to learn the lingo

Consider me a complete newbie to the BD/SM genre.
There are a lot of terms and references that I need to learn.
I know I can check out the stories in the appropriate catagories, and I am, but would appreciate any help given to my admittedly naive questions.

A quick question.
Not too long ago, I went on a date with a gal who invited me home, when we got there, she handed me this thing that looked like a cat o' nine tails, except that each thong was knotted at intervals, and between the knots, the thong was threaded lengthwise through small (about 1 1/2 inch long) pieces of what looked like bamboo. There were about 8 of these things to a thong.
What the hell would you call that?

Unless i miss my guess, it's called a braided cat, but i'll get back with you after looking a bit more.

Another descriptor might be "scourge," although they're usually associated with metal. First image is a traditional scourge.

The next is the braided cat of nine tails (to which this site owner added quirt.)

The last may be something like what you saw. The Romans used leather straps, or tails, attached to a handle. Within the tails, they would knot, braid, etc, bits of metal to intensify the damage of a whipping.

I didn't want to cause permanant harm, so the poor gal had to settle for getting her butt striped with an old fashioned peach switch, fresh cut from the tree.

This is generally new to me, aside from isolated incidents. But I know that I'm dominant.
Being submissive just ain't my personality or style.

Thanks to the people on this board for being willing to help out.

It's a;ready paying off in making my stories much better, and it is also paying off in other ways.

My friend Maeve read some of the stories posted in the BDSM genre and got interested. Then she read the story I am currently working on and made up her mind.
It looks to be an interesting evening ahead.
