For Christmas, a family member bought me a gift certificate worth several hundred dollars, to be used at an out-of-state resort. I have looked thru the brochure and web site repeatedly. I can't get excited about going there.
I have never expressed an interest in this particular destination, or (for that matter) anything even remotely like it.....it's simply not "my kind of place". Also, there are minimum-night stay requirements, which means that I would have to spend a considerable amount of money in addition to the "gift".
What should I do about this? I hate the idea of simply "not going", and then the family member has wasted the money. But I also can't bring myself to pay out all the extra money to go there, when I really don't want to. If I just don't go, I know that the subject will eventually come up, and I don't know what to tell her. I have considered explaining the situation honestly, and offering to give the gift back, hoping maybe that this person would use it themselves. (The gift certificate is in my name, and I don't know if it is transferrable).
I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do about this. I wish the person had consulted me before buying something like this.
